Game Summary
The Chiefs starters got a single drive on offense, but they made the most of it as they went right down the field and scored an easy touchdown. The starters on defense were only on the field for two drives, but outside of a 26 yard pass play they didn’t allow the Bears to get going.
After that though the Bears decided they wanted their starters to play longer, and their backups were playing against our 3rd stringers, so Chicago was able to go on a big 16-0 run in the 3rd quarter to take the lead. Rookie Dustin Crum had a chance to win the game on a last minute drive, but couldn’t get it done and the Bears held on to win.

why ice the kicker in a preseason game? i mean seriously
maybe to see if he’s ice-able? hey, it’s just practice anyway … and they DO have to get used to it
fuck the donks
well, ok then!
Quick takes Crum is terrible, chenal likes to hit. Ceh still has zero burst
Crum was our leading rusher!
… and doesn’t that just make you feel so damned good! 😉
Been reading the comments during the day, sure sounds like RoJo and Gore were the biggest disappointments. Also sounds like Karlaftis and Chenal did well. Not worried at all about losing the game, as BRaG said: trust in the process.
I only watched the 1st half, but yeah, based on the eye test the running game has problems. No one who ran the ball looked good.
Remember :
In the Pre-Season ;
Who Ever is Ahead @ The Half … Wins !!! … ; )
Ju-Ju, Watson, Fountain, Kelce, and Fortson vs a small set of defensive backs – The outcome would be laughable.
Running game was abysmal – not a lot of opportunities there but no one stood out to challenge MEH-CEH – Pacheco did not lose ground in the race but did not gain ground. RoJo and Gore looked awful. The fullback had the best run of the day.
Rookies seemed pretty solid save Kinnard – some mistakes were made but draft looking pretty damn solid.
yeah, a solid draft
Khalil Shakir 5 catches for 96 he was my guy when Kinnard was selected
Why are u back here? Didn’t u get kicked out of like every single chiefs site?
nope. and your handle sounds legit. Beware Monkeypox my friend
Henne might be more stable but Buechele would have more moments – which would you prefer for a backup quarterback?
none of the above?
For the second straight year, Buechele made some thing happen. He is far from a complete package but he could beat Henne out in a one on one competition.
Might be a repeat of what most have said BUT
Standout good – Watson, Fountain, Karlaftis
Standout bad – RoJo, Kinnard, overall running game
I didn’t really get to watch the game accept the first two opening series. I had the funeral for my aunt, and had a shit load of people over the house after her graveside funeral. Had a lot of people in the garage watching though as I talked with loved ones on the patio. I heard we may have a backup placekicker in the ranks!? Cheers fellas. Just know our 1st team marched down the field with ease. I can’t wait to read up on everybody else’s performances.
#ChiefsMuthaHumpinKingdomBitches. (We don’t need no pre-season trophies!)
Justin Reid might’ve been the happiest guy on the sidelines all day. That was great to see.
seems like he is always happy. Good dude
Patrick Mahomes played just one series and 11 plays in the Chiefs’ preseason opener in Chicago against the Bears on Saturday, and he had two items to check off his wishlist in his first action of the 2022 campaign. He wanted to lead a scoring drive, and he wanted to take his first hit — he just didn’t want it to be quite as hard as the helmet to the midsection delivered by Bears defensive end Trevis Gipson early in the first quarter.
“I was hoping I got hit and fell, just kind of off to the side,” Mahomes told the team’s television broadcast audience. “Not the direct helmet to the stomach and then him land on me. But it was a good drive and I’m glad that we got it out of the way, got that touchdown, and that we can build on that.
There was nothing dirty about the hit, however, and it didn’t stop Mahomes from completing a 19-yard pass to tight end Travis Kelce. Mahomes said he felt no ill effects from the collision.
“I wanted that first hit, I got hit hard,” Mahomes said. “He caught me right in the stomach, right between the rib pads. It was a nice first one to take, and it will make me better for sure.”
Mahomes was sharp in his limited action, completing 6-of-7 passes for 60 yards, culminating the drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Blake Bell. Each of his six completions targeted a different receiver, illustrating the depth Mahomes says the team has developed during training camp.
“Every guy seems like has a great day kind of every other day,” Mahomes said. “You can have Mecole (Hardman) have a great day, and then you have Marquez (Valdes-Scantling), and then you have JuJu (Smith-Schuster) and Skyy (Moore), it kind of keeps going. When you have an offense like that, it will be hard for defenses to account for who’s going to get the ball because we’re going to put the guys out, let them run the routes, and whoever’s open is open.
CHIEFSWIRE.com–
Karlaftis showing some motor!
the good
1st team offense looks sharp. There will be growing pains , but this offense has a chance to be a behemoth. Really good outing
Ditto defense. You can see the speed and athleticism on display
Karlaftis lived in the backfield . Kid looks good
Chennel made some plays
Watson looks like he can be a contributor
The bad
DB’s need to locate the ball better. Several passes completed due to poor ball awareness
Gore/Jones need to be cut. Pitiful display. Jones acted like he was scared to take a hit
Depth on the OL is shaky at best. The idea of Kinard starting at RT was put to rest
We need a backup QB. Henne’/Shane/Crum are garbage. A good backup QB is a real need
Overall i would say that if was week 1, we win this easy 31 – 14. I think this roster is as good as almost any in the NFL., or at least the first 32 players. But there are some holes that need plugged. Not mad, but I want to see more next week
agree, outside Henne. He didn’t look good today but has shown he is a serviceable back-up.
we have not only the best QB, but one of the most intelligent QB’s in the NFL on the roster. He doesn’t need a mentor. He is the master now, he is the mentor. You saw him going to Shane with the tablet to explain what happened on the previous play. We need to take advantage of that and draft a real backup QB to devlop for picks later on
There’s always next yrs draft if Shane can’t be flipped or developed.
”IF” LOL
you could be right, time will tell.
I don’t think that replacing Henne is as much a need as a luxury. I get it, you look at him and think you don’t want him starting games for us, and on that level, I agree. Where I don’t agree is that Henne helps make Mahomes play better from the sideline, basically as an informal assistant QB coach. That undoubtedly carries over to practice and prep, so you’d have to replace Henne with someone just as good in that role, or you’re decreasing performance overall, on the off-chance that a better on-field QB might be needed to fill in.
Since Henne’s role has been repeatedly cited as a valuable asset, I’m inclined to take the experts at their word.
Right again, BRaG!
I have little faith Henne can win us games if he had to start. He has always been a below average QB. I agree that he was indispensable with Patrick in his early years. He was that smart/saavy vet to lean on. Now, Mahomes is that vet. As soon as he was done with that interview, he went right over to Buechelle and broke down on the tablet what happened with Henne looking on. That told me all I need to know about the backup QB situation
I agree, Henne’s veteran-ness no longer has as much value to this team as it used to. He does still help out a lot in practices, which lets Mahomes concentrate on his own stuff, but not sure that’s worth a roster spot.
It won’t be addressed this season, but I want a late day 2 pick or a failed former first round reclamation project as the teams backup going forward
After Matt Rhule gets fires, maybe pick up Darnold for cheap. And hire Rhule for a defensive assistant.
what about a 3rd for Jordan Love?
Ehhhh, I don’t want to trade a draft pick. But, I guess, that’s no different than drafting a rookie with our late 3rd. And of course our 4th rounders should always be used on CBs, so guess I can’t complain about using a 3rd on a QB.
I look at it as a 3rd to flip for 2 firsts and a 4th later. I have to look, but I believe rookie guarantees are all signing bonus. So KC wouldn’t be on the hook unless they pick p his 5th year option
wow, I just said the same thing before seeing this … GMTA or whatever
the drop off from Pat to any other QB we could possibly acquire means we are fucked if, god forbid, he misses significant playing time. The resources are better spent elsewhere.
In any other division I would agree with saints. In our division if Patrick goes down (knocking on wood) for any length of time we are screwed, so agree.
ummmm. the 2017 Eagles might disagree
Watson was real impressive today, totally flipped the bad impression of him I had from Thursday’s practice. It was just one bad drop that soured me on him Thursday, but he had several really good plays and no big screwups today.
Skyy Moore was impressive, too, I thought. Good ball security on the punt, good toe-tap, the kind of details that rookies usually mess up.
It would be big if both of those guys can be early contributors.
On the bad side, I was disappointed that our starting Oline didn’t totally crush the Bears’ run defense.
I loved your camp breakdown !! I was waiting for that all August. it looked like the Chiefs wanted to see what they had in the receiving corps. Very few runs. That was by design. Safe to sat Pacheco is on the roster to the point of ”let’s keep him hush hush” for AZ
Thanks, I appreciate that. I didn’t get to look for a lot of the interesting little details of stuff like individual performances, line play, stuff like that, because it was my first visit this year so I was looking to get a big picture of how things are going. I hope I can look for different details when I go back next week.
I’m glad the Chiefs passed a lot today. The new WR corps is probably #1 on my personal interest list. But just was hoping to see our Oline blow the Bears off the line a little bit more decisively.
Pacheco, yeah, he got some snaps with the ones today, and I’d say that seals it.
Berserrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrker!
so, how ya like HB’s replacement (Reid) … the dude even kicks XPs
I’m a miss this guy, though
… but as go_sal always said: love the team, not the player (man I miss #54 Brian “The Man” Waters)
I’ve said for a while that I’m not a huge fan of Henne as the backup, that I wish we had traded for Minshew back in the day. But if Mahomes goes down I don’t have much faith in Henne to go out and win a playoff game.
we all know what Mahomes is. He is on another level. But I don’t subscribe to this notion that the season is over if he went down. We have seen too many instances where that is not the case
Could Henne go out and win a game or two if Mahomes missed some time? Sure. But could he pull a Nick Foles and win the Super Bowl? I really doubt it.
It’d be a tough ask of somebody like Minshew too of course, but it seems more doable. With Henne it seems impossible that he’d win 3-4 playoff games.
I really wanted the Chiefs to go out there and sign Carson Strong.
Was Juju in today? I would have liked to see him get a catch.
first, I did NOT watch the game … I did check the scoreboard and stats at halftime and at the end … that said, a couple of thoughts
KC’s 1st & 2nd seem to be far ahead of CHI’s 1st & 2nd, no surprise there
given the second half stats, Crum is likely one of the first cuts and the “bottom of KC’s roster” has some growing to do if they’re going to make the second round of cuts coming up whenever
all THAT said: I wouldn’t read “too much” into the first preseason “scrimmage with referees and fans who have to pay” … I’m not at all concerned about the “first team” KC Offense or Defense (the usual suspects)
Buechele looks to be a keeper (Tony, get his name right, wouldya?)
cool to know Justin Reid can hit an XP in a pinch … the field must be halfway decent as Cairo Santos managed to get off a couple of FG’s and XP’s
2 more weeks of “practice” and then … THEN it gets real
Buechele had better play around him. I would expect Crum to get the earlier reps next week.
I think they need a better QB at the number 2 spot. That is just me
It always amazes me that there are betting lines on preseason games. Who is betting on them?
was thinking THAT was well when checking the box score … why would ANYONE bet on preseason games? ah well, I just wish those fools with “money to burn” would send some to me (or at least some good BBQ)
Willie Gay looking good
Chenal looked good, too.
