Chiefs Show Starters Are Still Good, Chiefs Lose To Bears 27-29 In Final Preseason Game

So much for the panic over previous preseason games.

The Chiefs got the ball first and decided to give their offensive starters a drive to get some game practice since they mostly sat last week, and they drove down and scored a touchdown, thanks in part to two penalties on one play by the bears (rigged for the Chiefs, am I right?) and Rashard Smith redeeming himself after a drop with a nice catch on a slant.

The defense also impressed, as the Bears mostly went backwards before picking up some yards that were still shy of a 1st. The offensive starters somewhat surprisingly came back out, and a DEEEP throw to Tyquan Thornton kickstarted a long drive, but Kareem Hunt dropped a pass ruining a classic Mahomes highlight, leading to a field goal. The Bears’ starters came back out and looked a little better, but after Caleb Williams held the ball forever and took a big sack their drive stalled again.

Once again Mahomes surprisingly took the field again, and once again the Chiefs unsurprisingly marched down the field with ease, although Mahomes did have a big run that had Chiefs fans holding their breath hoping he’d slide. The drive went into the 2nd quarter, but the touchdown to Rice counted all the same. The starters on both sides remained out, and this time the Bears managed to put a good drive together, but the Chiefs defense held in the redzone and only allowed a field goal.

The backups finally came in after that. Minshew led a drive that went down to the goalline, but only ended in a field goal. The Bears kept their offensive starters in and managed to finally score a touchdown against the Chiefs’ backup defense.

Coming out of halftime Ashton Gillotte had a monster drive. For the first several plays it looked like he was a future All Pro against the Bears’ backups. Later Oladokun did his best Mahomes impression with a huge 50-yard deep pass to Jimmy Holiday to set up another Chiefs touchdown.

In the 4th quarter when both teams were deep into their rosters the Bears finally managed to score a couple touchdowns, but the extra point on the first was blocked by Knowles, then they went for 2 to make up for it and couldn’t convert.

The game did have a dramatic ending, as the Bears drove all the way down to the goal line down 5, and with just 3 seconds left on the clock they scored a touchdown to go ahead and win the game.
