Game Summary
A lot of the starters, including the most important one, got the night off, so it was the backups taking on the Packers. The defensive starters continued their impressive preseason as they got a 3-and-out on their first two drives.
Mahomes was on the field briefly as the offense did the classic huddle in honor of Len Dawson, but it was Henne who actually got the start. After a hold by Wylie the Mahomes-less offense didn’t have enough juice to overcome a holding penalty and also went 3-and-out on the first drive.
The 2nd drive for the starters was better, but another holding penalty stalled the drive again, and they were forced to settle for a 44 yard field goal.
The backups were more hit-and-miss. QB3 Shane Buchele played well, leading many to call for him to become QB2. 4th round rookie CB Joshua Williams played less well, as he had a very rough night with penalties and receptions given up.
Box Score Champs
Passing Leader: Shane Buechele (166 yards)

Tackle Leader: Joshua Williams (6)
Sack Leader: Tershawn Wharton/Joshua Kaindoh/Dicaprio Bootle (1)
Interception Leader: Bryan Cook (1)
so, our 2nd and 3rd and 4th stringers are marginally better than those of the Packers, yes?
what’s a Matt Bushman?
did anyone actually win or lose a spot based on the glorified scrimmage? cutdowns be a comin’ soon …
Darius Harris 47 made several good plays. Including 2 or 3 in a row. He really stood out to me.
Bushman got 2 TD’s before injuring his shoulder. He was having a game before that.
RoJo decided to show up and looked like he wanted to be on the team.
Sky Moore looked ok on punt returns.
Karlaftis still looks like he’s going to make a big impact.
The starting defense looked really good.
We got the running game going a bit finally.
I’m excited for the season to start! We have another good team this year!
Early thought for next year’s draft – priorities seem to be RT, Pass Rusher to replace Clark, Wide Receiver as many are free agents.
Beware next year when Justyn Ross and Bushman are ready to compete for a roster spot.
My initial take on the game? I quipped to Mrs BRAG that the youngsters were playing like Vince Lombardi has given them the pep talk, “You will be fired with enthusiasm, or you will be fired, with enthusiasm!”.
Our guys were rats out there.
The running backs certainly were
Broken clavicle – Bushman.
6-8 weeks, IIRC. Mine took longer, but it broke in two places, and I couldn’t afford to have it pinned. Left one hell of a lump, and occasionally ached for over a decade, maybe two.
Damn. In the last PS game. That sucks. Although….
I seem to remember another TE who was looking good and got hurt in the last PS game some years ago. He did ok afterwards.
Wharton and Saunders were the backup DTs in the game – the Packers run game took advantage. That might be Shelton’s way on the roster.
My thoughts before the game was that 47 spots on the roster were written in stone (QB 2, WR 6, TE 3 – with Bell injured now, OL – 8, RB/FB – 4, ST – 3, DL – 7, LB – 5, CB – 5, S – 4). Six spots left for those left battling.
Well, take one for QB3, Bushman is likely in at TE, RB could get 5 unless you are counting Pac on ST
Pacheco counted as RB. I figure we keep at least two more D linemen, and one more O lineman. We are going to have to go light somewhere if we keep extra skill players.
Fully expect Bootle to be cut – clearly corner number six and has not looked good in coverage during any of the preseason games. Carter seems vulnerable at linebacker. We might go light there with only five.
Yeah. Don’t see him being in red on opening day
Not sure how our defensive line will round out – Kaindoh, Herring, Stallworth, Saunders, Shelton – would not surprise me to see any make the final roster or get cut.
Buechele, Bushman, and RoJo all made solid cases for making the roster. No other offensive roster bubble player made a statement tonight.
RT is a complete train wreck. The moron penciled in to start commited a penalty on the first fucking play. Nobody else did any better. unlikely to find anything worthwhile on waivers for OL. this could be a problem
Wylie is definitely the best we have right now – we cannot afford him to go down as the depth behind him does not appear to be promising.
And no way we try to sneak Buechele onto the PS. We’re keeping 3 QBs or trading Henne. And we’re not trading Henne.
Buechele is next years #2
I will say that Buechele completely outplayed Henne in the preseason.
Well, he did have a lot more chances but yes, he looked like he belongs.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but there was a running game tonight, wasn’t there?
Both RoJo and Pacheco looked good.
Even CEH looked good on his one carry, which of course was called back
I missed that one – walking my granddaughter back to her apartment.
First play. An actual burst up the middle. About 8 yards. Holding.
That is greater than mediocre – sounds promising.
All of them ran with a purpose tonight, I thought.
RoJo probably showcasing for another team. Glad they got Pacheco some reps to see what we might have when he settles in.
