Another bad game.
The Titans got the ball first and, despite the hype around Henry, mostly went to the air to move down the field, including an extra ironic Derrick Henry touchdown pass. This was helped by an untimely Frank Clark offsides penalty on 3rd and 6. The Chiefs offense was a little less sharp, as they stalled around midfield due mostly to a false start penalty and a sack on 3rd down. But a nice punt provided a silver lining by giving the Titans the ball on their own 2 yard line.
The Titans tried to use Henry to dig themselves out of the hole, but it didn’t really work so they tried a pick play that got called, so facing a 3rd and 9 they just ran a screen and managed to get that first first down. After getting out of that perilous situation the Titans aired it out deep down the field to Julio Jones (which was ruled complete after a long review). Then after a couple more short plays that went nowhere the Titans apparently realized they could just throw it down the field at will and scored on a long touchdown pass to AJ Brown to close out the 1st quarter.
The Chiefs offense struggled again, as Mahomes got pressured again on a 3rd and long, forcing a quick punt. It became clear that the Chiefs couldn’t afford that as the Titans effortlessly move the ball down the field again. The defense did eventually manage to tighten up and force a field goal, but it was still 17-0 when the Chiefs got the ball for the 3rd time.
It went from bad to worse, as Mahomes continued his streak of throwing interceptions as he tried to squeeze it into tight coverage and the Titans got the pick off the deflection. And as they did all day the Titans moved downfield with little issue, the only time they were in a tough spot a penalty bailed them out.
The Chiefs tried to do something on a 2 minute drive, even pulling a cool lateral play out of the bag of tricks, but a Mahomes fumble on a long run gave the ball back to Tennessee yet again. The defense got a clutch sack to prevent a touchdown (or slightly easier field goal), but the Titans still expanded the lead to 27-0.
The Chiefs offense decided they wanted to show up, and despite a couple penalties moved down the field and narrowed the game to 27-3. The Titans looked like they were on their way to another touchdown, but a great interception from Willie Gay stopped the Titans without points for the first time all game. The Chiefs had another long drive, but a penalty and a sack forced a long field goal that Butker missed (his first miss of the season.
The defense finally managed to force a punt, but the Titans’ punter pinned the offense on their own 3. The offense drove down the field, converted a long 4th down, but failed to convert an even longer 4th down where Mahomes got injured, and that’s all I feel like writing about.
