Tony’s Picks: Week 17

Tony tells you where to put your money for this week’s NFL games.

Last week: 11-5

Overall: 150-89-1

Home Teams (Benchmark): 111-118-1

Vegas Favorites (Benchmark): 149-89-2

This week: 16-0

Eagles over Football Team

The Vegas Favorites benchmark gets another tie as the Broncos an Raiders game had a pick ’em line. Unfortunately I picked the Broncos so they gained a half game on me by not trying. But this also makes me wonder if I missed some other ones, since surely this wasn’t the first pick ’em of the season. Oh well, too late now.

There’s no more Thursday Night Football games this year, which I’m actually sad about. I know they’re unfair, bad for players health, and are often sloppy, but I enjoy watching football and it sucks that there’s one less day with football on.

Anyway I’m going with the Eagles.

Saints over Panthers

Well that was about as bad as it gets for Ian Book and the Saints. Hopefully for them they get one of their real quarterbacks back in time for this game.

Buccaneers over Jets

How fun would it be if the Jets got revenge on all of those years of getting stomped by Brady by winning this game? I mean they won’t, but wouldn’t it be amazing?

Titans over Dolphins

A Dolphins win here, on top of the Chiefs beating the Bengals, would clinch the top seed in the conference for the Chiefs. While I’m picking the Titans, it’s not impossible for the Dolphins to win here. It’s certainly one of the few games where I hope my pick is wrong.

Patriots over Jaguars

This is why the Bills win last week was so big, as the Patriots only have games like this left on the schedule.

Colts over Raiders

Carson Wentz decided not to get vaccinated and now he’s out for this game. It’s not a huge deal though, as a likely victory next week over the Jaguars would get them into the playoffs regardless, plus Wentz is just a warm body at the quarterback position anyway. VEgas ironically agrees as the Colts are still heavy favorites over the Raiders.

Chiefs over Bengals

The Bengals are a good team, but they’re not quite as good as the Ravens made them look last week. Don’t forget that just a couple weeks ago they almost lost to Drew Lock and the Broncos. While this game isn’t the easiest on the schedule, the Chiefs have no excuse not to win.

Bears over Giants

The most meaningless game of all time. Usually teams who are out of the playoff race at least impact the top of the draft, but in this case the Giants own the Bears’ first round pick, so no matter who wins and who loses the Giants both help and hurt their draft position.

Bills over Falcons

I always forget the Falcons exist, but they’re actually technically in playoff contention. Sure, it’d require them to pull off two upsets over the Bills and Saints, but it gives their fans just enough hope to be brutally crushed, and that’s the whole reason the Falcons exist.

Cowboys over Cardinals

The Cardinals are absolutely reeling without DeAndre Hopkins, but this would be the ultimate get right game if they found a way to win here.

49ers over Texans

Trey Lance will get his second career start this week after Garoppolo injured his thumb in his terrible performance against the Titans. He wasn’t great in his first start against Arizona, but the Texans provide a much softer opposition.

Chargers over Broncos

With the Chargers hilarious loss against the Texans, both teams are now fighting just for the wildcard. The Chargers have a good shot of getting in as they have the Broncos and Raiders left on the schedule on top of an additional win. The Broncos would not only need to win this game, but hope that the Chiefs are resting starters in week 17 to have a chance to win that game too.

Rams over Ravens

There’s a chance Lamar Jackson returns this week from injury, but as his replacements have been mostly adequate that’s not going to change much. The Ravens biggest issues are all other injuries they’ve suffered throughout the roster. Now that they’re on the outside looking in to the playoffs, and with the Rams and a Steelers team that’s had their number recently left on the schedule, they desperately need to step up their game if they want any hope of losing in the wildcard round.

Seahawks over Lions

If the Seahawks lose this game I think they’ll throw Pete Carroll into Mount St. Helens.

Packers over Vikings

The Packers look to be well on their way to their 3rd consecutive 1st round bye, as neither the Vikings nor the Lions seem likely to give them much resistance. Although the Vikings did beat them earlier in the year…

Steelers over Browns

This has been a boring picks article, as I’ve chosen the favorites in every single game. Until now! The Steelers are a bit inconsistent, but I think they’re better than the conventional wisdom thinks. The blowout last week against the Chiefs probably has people spooked, but it’s not like the Browns have been super impressive either. The Steelers have a better record, beat the Browns earlier in the year, and are at home. Why not pick them?

Carson Wentz decided not to get vaccinated and now he’s out for this game.

This is an odd take given that 100+ guys have missed games in the past couple of weeks and the it seems ~95% of them were vaccinated.

Thanks for rubbing salt in the wound. our local stations are showing the worthless bears game instead of the chiefs.

No, I’m in the Northeast corner, just outside of Fort Wayne. For some reason, they think everyone in the area is a Bears fan – I think just because a lot of people in the area are sorry Cubs fans. I can understand a Colts game getting priority, but a Bears game when they are just playing for draft position is dumb. Heck, Cincinnati is about as close as Chicago. We are about the same distance from Chicago, Detroit and Cincinnati.

I guess that puts me in the “loser” category right from the start.
