The Chiefs 7th Round Picks Are… (Day 3 Open Thread Part 3)

Welcome to Draft Day #3!

The wait is almost over, as the 7th round of the draft has arrived and the Chiefs finally have picks again. Right now they have 3 picks, but it seems highly likely that they either combine them to move up or trade them for picks in next year’s draft.

Regardless, this will be the thread to discuss the rest of the draft, including the rest of our picks. Normally each pick would get their own post but this year there’s so many our 7th rounders will have to share.

Pick 243: Jaylen Watson CB, Washington State

Pick 251: Isaih Pacheco RB, Rutgers

Pick 259: Nazeeh Johnson S, Marshall

Any of these DBs gonna get natural positioned?

I think that safety we drafted in the 7th round is probably going to play slot CB.

I think that if McDuffie is as successful as everybody thinks he will be, then eventually it’ll be very tough to tell exactly what position he’s playing. I think his ceiling is a Swiss Army knife, a lot like Mathieu.

Hey, real football is on TV! Feels kinda refreshing to see after three days of just trying to imagine football.

The Chiefs must have some unfinished business plans for the D line via FA.
Other than that they got a lot of help on defense and some wr help.
I was surprised they took a RT and think Naing’s days may be numbered.
Though we might get Winfrey but guess he was a locker room bomb according to Soonerswire.
I’ll give the Chiefs a B, a DT would of improved it.

There was not a pick that I hated – last year – I despised the Powell pick. Good job Veach.

Overview
Undersized but explosive, Johnson is a three-year starter with plus athletic ability who appears to be missing the physical elements needed to stay at safety as a pro. He loses battles to tight ends working underneath or down the seam and is a below-average stopper as a tackler in space. Johnson might be suited for a permanent move to nickel corner, where his pattern matching and twitch could be shaped and improved with more coaching. He needs a more aggressive approach when playing the football if he’s going to make a team.

Strengths

  • Eye-popping 4.35 40-yard dash with 42-inch vertical leap at pro day.
  • Discipline to wait out misdirection at safety.
  • Burst and route anticipation to close on catch tries.
  • Has recovery speed to track down loose targets.
  • Range for above-average field coverage.
  • Flashed ability to cover slot targets man-to-man.
  • Readiness to match route breaks and stay tight to the pattern.

Weaknesses

  • Might not have enough play strength and toughness for the box.
  • Entry points as a tackler leave little margin for error.
  • Inefficient footwork and false steps at high safety.
  • Mismatched by size in the seam.
  • Doesn’t take playmaking angles on the throw.
  • Gets dragged for extra yardage as wrap-up tackler.

They really are set at Edge and DL…interesting. Kaindoh must be doing something to make them this comfortable.

Then again, Brugler lists him at 5’10”. So, something is off.

Yep, looks like CBS’ number was wrong, because their own write-up says he’s not tall:

“Super-experienced FS/NCB hybrid who flies all over the field. Rarely out of position. Smaller stature. Hard to find a clear-cut flaw on his film. Older prospect. (Chris Trapasso)”
Grade B+

Ha, sounds just like the guy I was watching, Verone McKinley. So, I guess we got my guy, just under a different name.
