On The One Year Anniversary Of The Tyreek Hill Trade, Let’s Remember The Lesson It Taught Us
26 repliesAlmost exactly one year ago the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins. Many people were in a panic at the time, but since the Chiefs won the Super Bowl anyway they have taken the time to note how happy they are to be wrong.

I expect a continuation of quote tweets on this today, because there’s nothing that gives a dopamine hit more than Twitter dunks, but I’ll get it out of the way and say Veach got me.
I won’t delete this because I keep my bad takes up and I ain’t scared to own them, so I’ll say… https://t.co/jtablx2UXB

At the time I was one of the few who liked the trade. While I didn’t like losing a player like Hill, I knew in net the Chiefs would likely be better off. Nowadays it’s nice to see vindication for my way of thinking.
In football, while it’s nice to have star players, it is just as important (or maybe more so) to not be forced to give hundreds of snaps to bad players. And lots of players get significant snaps throughout the season. In 2022 the Chiefs saw 19 players on offense and 20 players on defense get at least 100 snaps.
If you invest all of your cap space into a couple star players, you will be forced to put lesser players on the field next to them. How much does having a Chris Jones on defense matter if opposing quarterbacks can simply target a Mike Hughes on the over 500 snaps he played in 2021?
So with the anniversary of this bold trade, one that will surely go down in NFL history, let’s remember that having a star player isn’t the end-all be-all of team building (unless that player is named Patrick Mahomes).
Let’s see what I thought about it at the time

Sad. It’s always sad when a player unwanted to see play their whole career for the Chiefs and possibly become a hall of famer for the one team, go.
But I would have been sick if we gave a WR 120 million over 4 years.
Lots of picks. I wish the first was a little higher, or some of the others were a little higher, but maybe that’s greedy.
Need to make the most of these picks now. More Creeds, fewer Clydes.

Don’t forget about the all illusive and highly coveted cap space this trade cleared up. I also fully suspect that many of the high $$ contracts signed in the last week will not be fulfilled. Reek will be back on the market in two years. We will all be talking about how we took Miami to the cleaners with this one as we win the SB in 2023 and 2024.

Over the shock. Thinking now we should have cut or traded Clark and paid Tyreek instead. Would much rather have Tyreek than Clark.

would rather have the Hill deal AND made Clark a June 1 cut and save that much more in Cap Space Hell (and would have allowed him to seek out a trade with the understanding that he WOULD be cut June 1st for maximum cap savings, so any trade would have to factor that in)

I guess. It’s the end of an era, no doubt. Wondering what defensive changes we’re going to face next year because Tyreek will be gone.

that’s the beauty of it all … the uncertainty of what the other team will do, and what our own team will do … that’s why they play the games
and yet, it’s still The Mahomes Era, so there’s that (and Reid Era and Veach Era)
I feel so good knowing I said that this trade could actually be a good thing for the Chiefs and Mahomes. I thought the offense was becoming predictable and Mahomes was leaning too much on Kelce and Hill, to the exclusion of others. The getting rid of Hill would force him to trust others to make those plays. And what do you know? It worked!
I was definitely not in the doom camp at the time. I hated to see him go, but I thought it would be a bigger mistake to keep Hill at the higher APY he was demanding than to trade him. I watched enough of Brady’s career to see that could work. I always thought Veach would get in some decent players and Patrick, Andy, and company could find a way to make it work. And I was impressed with the haul of picks we got back.
I will say I had a lot more concern about how quickly we could get a needed rebuild done on the defense. I didn’t disagree with making the changes, but I didn’t think they could get up to speed nearly as fast as they did. My respect and admiration for Spags and his coaching staff went up tremendously after what they did this past year.
The morning huddlers should add this date to their chiefs history..
Those of us who actually READ the Huddles know that “this date” was actually YESTERDAY, and it was noted.
people actually READ that MH stuff? wow, who knew?
Well, I do, but I wrote it so I had to to see what I screwed up
Hmm. so your saying Tony is wrong? be careful, he may cut your pay.
Tony? I’ve been blaming YOU for the history being all wonky.
He led with “Almost exactly one year ago”, so he’s covered
It was surprising when I was compiling that – I would find several places on the internet that had different dates for things. who’d have thought the internet would be wrong!!
now, see? once again you get your so-called “facts” wrong … George Washington said that
Damn internet. Can’t trust anything , anymore
Touché….😊
What it taught me was not panic when Veach makes a controversial move. This offseason has been difficult with some of the losses, but we won a championship after trading Hill. Did not see that coming last year. The draft is coming up and our GM knows what he is doing there. What I would like to see is an OLT first, WR second, Edge rusher third, then go for best player available.
Concerning hopkins or obj, don’t we still need to extend CJ95? He takes priority over both of those guys.
A Jones extension is likely to reduce, not increase, his 2023 cap number
Which is another reason to get that done, so we can get more shiny new toys
Concerning hopkins or obj, don’t we still need to extend CJ95? He takes priority over both of those guys.
a midget who can’t catch takes priority over both of those guys
Any Scramble of the 3 ( EDGE, LOT, & WR ) that doesn’t have WR #1 for us & I’m Fine w/ it … ; )
