Chiefs news for 16 December 2018

Running back Damien Williams: from low-risk addition to key part of Chiefs’ offense | KC Star

In Spencer Ware’s absence, Williams scored two more touchdowns, bringing his total to four in a five-day stretch, and he led the team in rushing (10 carries, 49 yards) and receiving (six catches, 74 yards).  Used primarily on special teams for the majority of the season, Williams’ profile in the offense has increased dramatically in the last two games. With the release of Kareem Hunt and Ware’s shoulder and hamstring injuries, Williams began seeing significantly more time against the Baltimore Ravens.

Kansas City Chiefs: It’s Time For Bob Sutton To Go | KC Kingdom

The Los Angeles Chargers had never come back from down 14 in the fourth quarter and the Kansas City Chiefs had never lost after being up by 14 in the fourth quarter. Matter of fact, according to ESPN stats and infoPhilip Rivers was 0-20 for his career in situations just like that and teams were 0-88 all time. Those stats alone should tell you everything you need to know about the Chiefs current defensive situation.

Patrick Mahomes slips in MVP race | 247 Sports

Thursday night’s 29-28 loss by the Kansas City Chiefs to the Los Angeles Chargers has caused quarterback Patrick Mahomes to fall back a tad in the odds to win this year’s NFL Most Valuable Player award, with the latest numbers from Bovada.lv now ranking him a close second to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Kyle Shanahan compares Patrick Mahomes to John Elway | Clutch Points

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan thinks that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ skills are best comparable to Denver Broncos legend John Elway. Mahomes has burst onto the scene this season after taking over for Alex Smith, and the former Texas Tech star has emerged as the front runner for NFL MVP.

Patrick Mahomes has jersey enshrined in Pro Football Hall of Fame | Arrowhead Addict

The exhibit featuring Mahomes’s jersey comes from his performance in Week 2, a road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mahomes opened the year by setting an NFL record for most touchdown passes in his first two games with a total of 10. Mahomes had 6 touchdown passes alone against the Steelers—an incredible feat when you consider the competition (and that the first week featured four more touchdowns against the L.A. Chargers).

CHIEFS STAR QUARTERBACK PAT MAHOMES PLANS ‘PATTY FLAKES’ CEREAL | AdAge

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Pat Mahomes regularly evades 300-pound linemen with ease, but now he’s facing a more formidable opponent: Tony the Tiger. Mahomes, 23, is preparing to launch a signature breakfast cereal, “Patty Flakes,” the second-year player’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, said on the Bloomberg Business of Sports podcast.

Kiszla: With job on line, Broncos coach Vance Joseph makes gutless choice in loss to Browns | Denver Post

Fire everybody. But start with coach Vance Joseph. Is that too harsh? With his job on the line, Joseph turned gutless. And his lack of nerve cost the Broncos in a 17-16 loss to Cleveland Saturday night.

Von Miller passes Simon Fletcher to become Broncos’ all-time leader in sacks | DenverBroncos.com

In front of his home crowd, Von Miller became the Broncos’ all-time leader in sacks. Miller brought down Baker Mayfield on the final play of the third quarter to tally the 98th regular-season sack of his career on Sunday to move past Simon Fletcher on the Broncos’ career sack list and become the franchise’s all-time leader.

Is owner Mark Davis the one really behind the current state of the Raiders? | Silver and Black Pride

The company line is to blame general manager Reggie McKenzie’s misses while firing him. Others look to blame Gruden and his moves since returning to the Raiders since he has control over football operations. Now, particularly with the Cooper report coming out, you have to wonder just how much Davis has to do with all this.

It might be wise to move Christmas Eve finale in Oakland | Pro Football Talk

With Oakland suing the Raiders and the Raiders yanking an offer for a one-year lease and the Raiders previously threatening to leave Oakland if Oakland filed its lawsuit, the Raiders may be playing their last game ever (or at least until they inevitably move back there again) in Oakland. In prime time. On Christmas Eve. What happens under those circumstances remains to be seen, but things could get ugly. Last Browns Game in Cleveland ugly. Or maybe Disco Demolition Night in Chicago ugly. Wherever it would land on the overall ugly scale, it’s the kind of ugly that the NFL shouldn’t want playing out in what will be the final Monday Night Football game of the year.

LSU LB Devin White is a name to monitor for Raiders | USA Today

Over the next several months, we are going to get familiar with several hundred players from the college ranks as we look for potential draft candidates for the Raiders. One of the most common names associated with the Raiders in early mock drafts has been linebacker Devin White.

Chargers can no longer be overlooked as Super Bowl contender | Yahoo Sports

While the Rams and Chiefs have garnered most of the attention, the Chargers have been one of the hottest teams since last season. Their 20-6 mark since an 0-4 start last season is tied with New England and New Orleans for most wins going into Sunday’s games. The Saints and Patriots have a better winning percentage.

Los Angeles Chargers WR Keenan Allen could miss time with hip pointer | Bolts From The Blue

Normally, a hip pointer takes 1 to 3 weeks to fully recover, so Allen has an opportunity to return in time for the playoffs. They will certainly need him if they are to make a deep run in the postseason.

Chargers Hosting the AFC Championship Game Would Be the Saddest Occurrence in NFL | 12Up

The problem with the Chargers hosting the game is that they would be playing at the StubHub Center, a venue that struggles to sell seats for Chargers games despite having the smallest seating capacity of any NFL stadium (at only 27,000 available seats, the StubHub Center is almost 30,000 seats away from the second-smallest NFL stadium). Limited attendance mixed with similarly limited seating could lead to a humiliating AFC Championship crowd, which would forever make the Chargers’ fanbase the laughingstock of the league.

Fines roundup: Ezekiel Elliott fined $36,765 by NFL | NFL.com

Elliott was fined a total of $36,765 for lowering his helmet illegally and for executing a low block during the game, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. He was penalized for the helmet infraction, which occurred during the fourth quarter, but referees didn’t flag him for the low block.

Malcolm Jenkins fined $12,500 for blasting NFL replay official | NBC Sports

After the game, Jenkins said, “Whoever’s watching that in New York should stay off the bottle (see story).” Although the replay official was clearly wrong and apparently didn’t understand the rules, you really can’t expect to accuse league officials of being drunk without getting fined.

Bears’ Success Is A Good Thing For NFL Ratings, Which Are On The Rise | Forbes

The rival Packers are heading to Soldier Field for a big December game and this time around they are the underdogs dealing with coaching issues and questions about their roster, not the Bears.

I usually don’t cheer for the Broncos but really wish they would have won last night. With them out of the play-off hunt they don’t have much to play for now. Hopefully the Ravens can knock off the Chargers but if they don’t I think they win out. Was hoping with the Broncos still in the hunt they might take them out in the last game. I’ve been concerned about the Seahawks game for some time and with the play-calling of BOTH Sutton and Reid Thursday night I’m even more concerned about it.

Besides the terrible defense, I think the biggest problem the last few weeks is the offensive line. Their pass protection has been terrible. Kinda hard to call plays when they pass block as good as the defense plays defense

I think when you look at the players who missed time this and last year due to injury, its not that surprising the defense has declined. We’ve played games this year with Houston, Ford and Berry all out. But yeah, not having your best 3 players on the field for large chunks of the season is something that any DC should be able to overcome.

So Mahomes loses ground on the MVP in a 1 point, last second loss where he didn’t have a chance to bring the Chiefs back. Yet, Brees throws a terrible INT in their prime time loss to the Cowboys. I just feel like the national media will come up with any excuse to NOT give the award to Mahomes.

Mahomes stats in the Chiefs 3 losses:
    80/116, 69%, 1,073 yds, 12TDs, Avg. QB rat.: 112.6. Avg. Chiefs score: 39.6

    What more can he do?

Brees stats in the Saints 2 losses
    55/73, 75%, 566 yds, 4 TDs, Avg QB Rat: 100.5, Avg. Saints score: 25.

Brees also threw a crucial INT when he had a chance to bring the Saints back and take the lead.

This is a stupid argument. Mahomes is the MVP, hands down. We don’t have him and I bet we barely win 5-6 games this season with our defense.

Correct. Mahomes should be unanimous MVP, but they’ll do this as a service to Brees since he may not have another shot, right or wrong. I guess I take it as a nod to Mahomes since they assume he’ll have more chances to be MVP.

I’m not over the Chargers loss either. I really believed this was the year the Chiefs win it all, but now it feels like odds are against us. I still am stunned Reid thought running up the middle and then giving the ball back with 2:37 to go was the right move. I’m still stunned Jackson’s catch was upheld as a TD when the ball was moving as he went out. I’m still shaking my head Scandrick couldn’t even cover his guy on the game winning play.

Refs made that same DPI call on the Jets last night. WR and DB were handfighting on a crucial 3rd and long, WR couldn’t/ didn’t get his 2nd hand up. Texans win.

Even with a “snap count”, Berry should have come in when the game was on the line. I get they were babying him and didn’t want to push it. But in a big game like that, Berry would have lifted that defense enough to stop the Chargers. Just my opinion.

There’s only two scenarios that makes sense to me. Either Andy Reid did not believe the game was a must-win situation, or the plan all along was only to play Eric for one half of the game and they were sticking to the plan come hell or high water.
