Monday Night OT: Chiefs Signed A Former Future 1st Round Pick as an UDFA (And Melvin Ingram Maybe Returns)

Welcome to Arrowhead Guys–Monday Night Open Thread. Talk about the Kansas City Chiefs or anything you would like. Time’s Yours.

If you have 20 minutes to spare, this video goes in depth on Ross’s history.

In other news, the Chiefs tagged Melvin Ingram with a tender, so he will (probably) return, and even if he doesn’t the team will get a draft pick for their trouble.

Welp, looks like the SCOTUS just committed suicide. This invalidates any ruling from the court. I’m a Christian. I’m anti-abortion. This is why I backed away from evangelicalism. They want a theocracy.

This is the core problem I have with the entire idea.
If you believe in freewill, you can’t believe in an Omniscient/Omnipresent God simply because if anyone KNOWS the eventual outcome of an event or timeline in advance, then anything you do is simply filling out the predetermined steps to get to that outcome.
You can tell yourself you are making your own choices, but if you believe that God knows all that was, is, and will be (the key part), then your choices have been known ever since God got that smart.
To quote Roger Waters, “What God wants, God gets”. If you deviate from “the plan”, then you do so because God wanted you to IF….you believe in an Omniscient God. If you don’t, then it’s our own damn fault.

I got lost in there

God provided this earth on which we are born, like cows, mouse, and Gorrillas.

We decided we are greater than all the other animals and created a theme to back that up….

I do not subscribe to we are better, so Cows have Souls and Dogs especially

“God provided this earth on which we are born, like cows, mouse, and Gorrillas.

We decided we are greater than all the other animals and created a theme to back that up….”

Let’s just work with this for now.
If we believe that A) God knows all that will be, then WHEN God made the Earth, and the cows, mice, and gorilla’s, B) he ALSO knew we would decide we are greater than the others. How do I know that? Because we believe that God knows all that will be, so he HAD to know when he made these things that we would claim superiority (I agree with you. We ain’t).
In a nutshell, if you believe A, then you are stuck with B.
If you don’t believe A, then we, by our own choices, came up with B by free will.

It is completely possible to believe in God, but not that he is all knowing or all powerful. (As an agnostic, if there is a God, this is the one I’m betting on.) So you can believe in God AND Freewill, but not an all-knowing God and Freewill.

so, according to that court draft, Alito said: “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision”

So do it. Why are people upset that activist judges are reversing a ruling from earlier activist judges? If you want a law (or better yet, a constitutional amendment), make it happen. The fact that the Supreme Court is perceived as so influential in politics that they may have single-handedly been the reason Trump won in 2016 reflects the cowardice of Congress and the people to do their jobs and not abrogate their authority.

I believe that many conservatives who wouldn’t have voted for Trump normally thought the Supreme Court was such a critical issue that they would “hold their nose and vote”. (That doesn’t explain why so many of them came back with over-the-too support in 2020, but that’s a different discussion.) The court has way too much power, and people on both sides of the aisle are finally seeing it. But the answer isn’t packing the court to make it do what one side or the other wants; the answer is taking back the power that rightly belongs to the people and their representatives to enact laws and constitutional amendments that reflect the will of the people.

Yeah, I tend to think that any real positive change won’t happen until people tear down both political parties and find some common ground. Our echo chambers of the internet and social media aren’t going to lead to the kind of clear-headed thinking that is necessary to pass a constitutional amendment — about any topic.

The point ultimately is that the federal government and the courts have no constitutional authority to make decisions on said un-enumerated rights. The fact that these rights aren’t enumerated certainly doesn’t mean they don’t exist, but it does mean that they aren’t in the federal government’s sphere of authority. I know many will disagree with me, but I tend to think that the federal government basically saying “Not my area, not my problem” is not only a valid course of action but also a preferable one for many different hot-button issues.

TBH, whether decided right or wrong, I think that 2nd amendment issues are at least constitutionally within the court’s jurisdiction. But then I tend to take the constitution at face value that anything not enumerated is reserved for the states and the people.

the PROBLEM is that … when it comes to those rights, federal government and the courts have no constitutional authority to make decisions on said un-enumerated rights … BUT INDIVIDUAL STATES DO … and there’s the big issue right now

Yep. The people in the states need to be able to establish laws to protect those other rights. Or the other option is a constitutional amendment or two for the U.S. Constitution. Either way, just don’t leave it up to an unelected court to make up rules to protect rights that haven’t been appropriately protected due to laziness and/or incompetence of lawmakers and citizens.

To the extent that this has been allowed by the states, sure. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that this federal overreach was the founders ideal. And I think some states are starting to realize this in areas like marijuana regulations, for example.

Another constitutional amendment is the only way that I see that fits in my view of the federal government’s role with things not delegated to them by the Constitution. Otherwise, the best that can be done is trying to fix gerrymandering and money in politics so that states actually represent their people.

That I don’t agree with, at least not in the context that you’re approaching it. The 9th explicitly states that the federal government isn’t to deny those rights, but it doesn’t give them authority to define or actively protect those rights. This isn’t some sort of “blank check” amendment where we can decide any random thing is an unenumerated right that must be protected by the federal government. Can states be wrong in protecting or not protecting rights? Sure. But the founders always believed that the government closest to the people was most likely to reflect the people, so states have far more power and flexibility in some of these things.

It seems like they had a lot more picks that fell to them – no really any reaches, at least compared to the projections. heck, even the UDFA was projected to be a first round pick for a while.

can’t understand why a team wouldn’t take a chance with a lower round draft pick and pick a guy like that.

I think it worked out for him as a high priority UDFA and he could pick the team

a 7th round pick does not have that option

I agree – a good UDFA can get more than the draft pick because its a bidding war… but from a team standpoint, I’d take a chance on a guy like that. probably has better odds of being healthy enough to play as a 7th rounder of making the team

Well well well

Ravens just did same as Chiefs did for Melvin Ingram

an unrestricted free agent tender on Houston. Under the terms of the tender, the Ravens will have exclusive negotiating rights with Houston if he has not signed with another team by July 22. If that happens, Houston will be set to make 110 percent of his 2021 compensation, which was $2.075 million in salary and bonuses.

WHY DID CHIEFS PAY $17M to clark this year. He had 4.5 sacks in regular season 2021

In playoffs

Meanwhile Ravens will ONLY pay $2m for Justin Houston in 2022. If Justin resigns with Ravens

Houston had 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery for the Ravens last season in 2021.

Justin 4.5 sacks in 2021
Frank 4.5 sacks in 2021

WTH!! Ooo well. It is…what it is

This is why I think the real value of sacks isn’t what it once was. plus the later rules have made it easier for offenses to overcome 3rd and longs with the passing game. At least I think. no stats to back me up though.

A tribe of Indians capture a cowboy

They bring him back to their camp to meet the chief.

The chief says to the cowboy, “You going to die. As is our tradition we will give you one wish a day for three days. On sundown of third day, you die.

What is first wish?” The cowboy thinks for a moment and then responds, “I want to see my horse.” The Indians get his horse. The cowboy grabs the horse’s ear and whispers something, then slaps the horse on the ass. The horse takes off. Two hours later, the horse comes back with a naked blonde. She jumps off the horse and goes into the teepee with the cowboy. The Indians look at each other, figuring, “Typical white man – can only think of one thing.”

The second day, the chief says, “What your wish today?” The cowboy says, “I want to see my horse again.” The Indians bring him his horse. The cowboy leans over to the horse and whispers something in the horses ear, then slaps it on the ass. Two hours later, the horse comes back with a naked redhead. She gets off and goes in the teepee with the cowboy. The Indians shake their heads, figuring, “Typical white man – going to die tomorrow and can only think of one thing.”

The last day comes, and the chief says, “This your last wish, white man. What you want?” The cowboy says, “I want to see my horse again.” The Indians bring him his horse. The cowboy grabs the horse by both ears, twists them hard and yells, “Read my lips! POSSE, dammit! P-O-S-S-E!”
