Monday Night Open Thread: Shameless Self Promotion Edition

AG’s dictator-for-life Anthony forgot to do an open thread tonight, so I have taken it upon myself to do so, mainly for the purpose of promoting my own stuff.

First up, I had a tweet that got popular (at least by my standards), so like and retweet please. I need more followers but am too lazy to put in the work.

I also had an article go live today on such exciting things like WAR and the salary cap, reaching a surprising conclusion.

And did you know I made a highlight video a while back? Watch that as well to get the view count up on that video.

In non-me news, GP needs some questions to answer on his podcast, so ask difficult questions like how tensors work so I can pass off Science Saturday again this week (just kidding, I already have Science Saturday written).

So on the newest Official Chiefs Podcast, BJ Kissel said he hasn’t seen Cody Thompson drop a pass yet.

I see Cody Thompson making the 53, which means Dieter probably doesn’t.

Think I’ve gotten steady enough to mention Mrs. BRAG was taken to the hospital via ambulance today. She’s fine, but when it’s indeterminate chest pain, you don’t fuck around. They called ahead so that they could let a couple EMTs on part-way there -roadside stop – and she told me that they nearly called for a Life Flight, just in case. Fortunately she didn’t have anything seriously wrong with her, but it has made for a stressful day for me. After the strain of the previous four added to today, it would be nice if Fate gave me a weekend off at this point.

But while I have some severe trust issues (Thanks, Mom & Dad!), I have come to trust that the community here will be here for me if I need it. Normally, that would take a lot of effort on my part – but this time it hasn’t, because all y’all have done the work for me. Thanks to each and every one of you – Includes you too, Saints 😉

Honest question, if you are Dorsey what do you do about Kareem Hunt? You can’t keep someone with him 24/7, but come on man, stay the heck out of the bars and nightlife! Who knows what really happened, but do you think Dorsey should demand more from him? More counseling, AA classes, maybe a chaperone?

I basically agree with you, but you can’t help those who refuse to be helped. I’m withholding judgement on Hunt until the available facts get more reliable, though. Remember how many people bought into the “Hill broke his son’s arm!!!” narrative, even though it was pretty obviously wrong after the report that the Mandated Reporters in the hospitals concluded that there were no signs of abuse apparent with the boy. Some still believe that the falsity is the truth, at least on Twitter. The facts don’t matter to them, though, as they have their minds made up.

My mind isn’t made up on very many things, though. I have, through some little effort, managed to get myself living by the maxim that if the facts show that my belief is wrong, then the belief must change, because the facts won’t. I’m sure that many believe they live by that, but they really don’t do it comprehensively. I’m here to tell you that getting to where you are actually living that way is one hell of a lot of work.

As much as I rag on Hill, at least he is a top flight wr. He is a threat to blow the lid off a defense anywhere on the field at any time. He is hard to replace because those guys are hard to find to begin with. So I understand from a football perspective not wanting to get rid of him. But Hunt is just a RB. And it isn’t like he has Chris Johnson top end speed. Is a bruiser between the tackles runner. Those guys aren’t that difficult to find. The Chiefs rush yards per game actually when up after he was cut. He is a really good player in his own right, but he isn’t a guy you bend over backwards for when it comes to looking past off field issues

People call the cops for all kinds of reasons, many of them foolish and/or misguided. The fact that a cop showed up means less than the fact that he or she left without doing more than ask some questions and take a look at the situation. Happens all the time.

If there’s real evidence that comes out at some time that demonstrates that Hunt is still violent, then I’ll be saddened but unsurprised. But that’s gotta be based on actual facts, not media rumors. You do you, but let me do me.

A note, Saints? If you stood accused of some heinous crime and the mob came after you, I would say the same thing to them. Don’t believe the hype. Judge by the totality of facts. Your feelings are irrelevant, use reason and logic, not emotion. Innocent until proven guilty. Don’t jump to conclusions, and so forth.

And while that may strain your credulity, I’ll double down and tell you that how I felt about you wouldn’t matter. Like you or hate your guts, the message would be out there. That’s how following principles works. It’s often difficult, sometimes uncomfortable, and occasionally dangerous – but though morals can shift and bend and still be called “moral” in spite of all the exceptions and other mental gymnastics involved, a principle is something that must apply evenly and unwaveringly.

Or at least that’s the ideal with principles, but I work hard at living up to them. If the evidence eventually showed that you were guilty, that’s where my support would end, because facts are facts whether I like them or not. However, if after you’d served your sentence and were released, and several years later you were accused of a similar crime on flimsy evidence and media-generated hysteria, I’d be right back at it with the same mantra I’ve been sticking to about Hill.

Does that make where I am coming from more clear?

I can understand that, Saints, but I’m not using common sense. I’m using the totality of the available facts. Those facts indicate the he didn’t abuse his son or GF, and that the audio clip is a sham where she was trying hard to get him to say something she could use against him in a custody fight. Her texts had her saying that, and the phone record was forensically verified.

And the problem with common sense is that it can’t get to the right answer if the right answer doesn’t match your beliefs. Often times the correct answer to something is counter-intuitive, and common sense simply can’t get you there. It’s fine for the straight-line obvious things – but as soon as the correct answer isn’t obvious, you’re screwed.

Incidentally, I feel like we have found a groove in which we can talk things out better. While I was initially a little worried about how you’d respond, I’m finding this conversation quite enjoyable.

What do we have to say he is guilty?
Multiple times when the police came to the house
Child removed by CPS
DA saying one or both parents hurt the child
Admission he whips his child with a belt
Reports of welts and bruises on the child
We have the audio where Hill doesn’t deny hitting his son in the chest and says things like ‘’You should be a afraid of me too’’ and ‘’when we get home I don’t play I lock in
And yes, we have the very violent incident in college which proves he is capable of doing this

On the flip side, what evidence do we have he didn’t do it? A very suspicious sounding text put out by his attorney who is getting paid thousands of dollars to defend him. so there is way more evidence supporting guilt than innocence in this case IMO

People call the cops on people for all kinds of dumb reasons, yes. However, there’s no “good” spin for Hunt here, who personally has zero business being near a bar given his recent history. He is, at best, embarrassed. At worst, this just adds more fodder to the idea that Hunt isn’t reliable to even be on the roster when it really counts.

s advice goes, I agree, but there’s nothing proven by the fact that he went to a bar and things got a little loud. sure, it’s a bad look for Hunt to wear, but he’s an adult who’s allowed to do stupid things at times as long as he stays within the law.

I hear people talk at times about how the NFL and teams should “make the players” do whatever harebrained scheme they have in mind, completely overlooking the fact that in order to make whatever bright idea work as conceived it would take a level of control over the players’ personal lives at the master-slave level. No way I can get behind that sort of crap – I’d be on the other side of that, pushing back.

Casually discussing the enslavement of others to satisfy their own feelings is dangerous stuff, in the long run. Little bit, once in a while, as a completely unrealistic state of affairs is one thing, but I’m talking about people actually wanting this crap to happen without considering what it will do to their targets. The more of that kind of talk there is, the more acceptable it becomes to think that way.

True and I don’t believe anyone has the right to keep him from going to bars. My impression has been that all of his prior incidents have involved alcohol. So if he’s serious about staying out of the news he should do any partying in private at the very least.

There’s that, but what concerns me is that he’s still hanging with the same circle of friends, seemingly. I have a friend who used meth for quite a while (not to the meth-mouth stage or even close), and he’s told me that quitting it was fairly easy for him – once he wised up and quit hanging around with meth users.

Also related is the classic relationship advice for women who go from bad relationshipr to bad relationship and complaining about being treated poorly, etc.: Honey, if you date an asshole, he’s the problem and you move on. But if everyone you date is an asshole then you need to take a look in the mirror and fix that”.

But you can, if you keep it to the limited sense in each case. A rookie getting playing time can have a limited impact in the game, but experience helps development. If you don’t play rookies at all, their impact’s irrelevant, but it doesn’t negate the first one. So it’s a balancing act. For rookies to have any sort of impact they must play – but it’s also fair to consider there is scale involved, as well. More snaps to a late-round rookie helps him develop, but there’s a cut-off point to that increase where the snap count increasingly interferes with his development. A point of diminishing returns that depends somewhat upon each individual being considered.

Related points, in the end, but somewhat different premises.

Out front of our apt. building there’s a hedge composed of currants (or so I’m told) which had to be dug out so new concrete could be poured. They got replanted, but as it happened he was just as incompetent with plants as he was with concrete (Who pours concrete without ever touching a level?). And after a while I got sick of seeing it unattended with nothing being done to help it recover from the damage and years of previous neglect. So I dug into it, big surprise.

After clearing out the dead sticks and stems, my next step was untangling them and doing what I could to get them standing straight. I’m still doing that, but the manager loaned me a pair of hedge clippers of the two-handled type, and we discussed me plans for moving it forward. I yesterday and today I spent doing more de-tangling supplemented by some cautious pruning of live stuff that’d never grow straight so as to make room for the younger stuff to replace it.

Today a grouchy old bat that lives here complained to me about how awful I’m making the hedge look, and it was a pleasure to tell her that the manager knew of my plans, approved of them, and appreciated my efforts. Feels good, man.

Next year at soonest for looking really healthy, more likely two until it’s properly filled out again, in my estimation. The plants were in really bad shape – there are still stems which are well-established and nearly horizontal. But my approach hearkens to Bonsai pruning, a little bit at a time. It’s basically my Zen place, too.

Exactly. Got a few maples that have been trying to grow in there (and should have been dealt with before replanting), but I keep stripping their back and any new growth. I’ll win that battle, in the long run. And her going after me wasn’t a surprise, because she always finds a reason to be unhappy about something.

Which of course is why handing her that shitburger in such polite words was so satisfying. lol

That’s like how to grow a Chiefs football team, except you gotta drop in a Mahomes at just the right time.

Got a rare sun rain going on in Stover. Barely any clouds out, suns out bright as day, no rain at all today and we have a steady light rain going on. pretty cool
