Know your Chiefs – Justyn Ross

Justyn Ross was born on December 15, 1999, in Phenix City, Alabama.  He attended Central High School in Phenix, as well.  As a senior, he had 37 receptions for 730 yards and 13 touchdowns.  He was a four start recruit and ranked as the number 45 national recruit.  He received offers from Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, and Duke amongst others.  He chose to attend Clemson University.

As a freshman at Clemson, he had 46 receptions for 1000 yards and nine touchdowns.  As a sophomore, he had 865 yards on 66 receptions with 8 touchdowns.  He missed the 2020 season due to a congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine.  The doctors said the condition was likely there from birth, but was discovered only when he suffered a stinger during the 2020 spring practice.  He said he felt a burning in his neck and tingling down his arm.  After surgery, he wasn’t cleared to play until the 2021 season.  In the preseason that year, he suffered a hairline fracture in his foot and played through it during the regular season.  He had surgery to repair it during the break between the regular season and the bowl game.  He was named as one of two recipients of the ACC’s Brian Piccolo Award, presented annually to the conference’s most courageous player(s).

At the Clemson Pro Day, he was timed at 4.63 for the 40-yard dash, but was still recuperating from his foot surgery.   In the 2020 draft, he went undrafted because of the medical concerns, and signed with the Chiefs as a UDFA in 2022.

This training camp/preseason is going to be a fun one.

Who gets the credit for bringing him in if this works out like it could if he nears his ceiling? Was this a Veach move or did he sign with us because of Mahomes?

I’m thinking Veach and his team of talent scouts.

All joking aside, this was a great write-up, and thank you for posting it. Sometimes a little R&R and change of scenery is all that’s needed. Hopefully he recharges and comes back aboard soon.
