Into The Afternight: Our 3rd Shift O/T

If you’re still up and want to talk Chiefs, or just hang with fellow citizens of the Kingdom, this is the place.

It’s been a very busy day today, so without further ado…

Of course, it’s worth remembering that owning a fully automatic gun of any sort is illegal without an FFL, and they don’t come cheap. I’ll also add that, unlike the AR-15, this is an actual military weapon. Calling an AR an “assault rifle” is not a true statement, but this AK actually IS one.

With that, time’s yours.

Unique idea as I wind down for the evening – NFL star signs a five year 100 million dollar contract – and then does not perform up to expectations – let us say in year two. The organization should be allowed to buy out the contract for one year – double the average annual salary (so, in my example – 40 million) and all of that money is freed up from the salary cap. Would have to be average annual salary to avoid one year being worth a million and the next year being 39 million. Players can still be cut the regular way with salary cap implications but organizations will no longer be hamstrung by bad contracts and players have a bit of insurance if they get injured – such as Justin Houston.

I don’t like it. Right now every team competes on the same playing field because of the current salary cap structure.

I know we all say teams are owned by billionaires, but your new proposal would hurt 2 teams in particular. The Raiders and Packers. Neither team has monopoly money to play around with.

There might be other teams in the same position I can’t think of off the top of my head, but I don’t want the NFL to turn into the MLB where the deepest pockets win 90% of the time.

I think the player with the most pressure going into this upcoming season will be CEH. He has to produce big numbers with the line we now have and, as it stands now, has to become weapon number three – after Kelce and Hill.

Agree. I was not impressed last season. I know the guards for this team were the lowest rated run win rate in the NFL and that likely played in to his struggles, but his legs stop on contact far too much.

We have two ways left to improve our team before the season starts.

Trade for a player that another team thinks isn’t in their long term plans.

Sign a veteran that gets released because a team just brought in a rookie to replace them.

One player I would target in a trade is Dallas Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup. I wanted to draft him when he came out of Colorado. He is entering the last year of his rookie deal, and Dallas is stacked at WR and most likely won’t spend the money to keep him.

We have linemen to spare to use for trade bait as well. I said in an earlier post today that around five players that will make our team are not on our roster yet. Veach has shown that he will make these types of deals – Ward, Erving and such. Gallup would be a great pick up but, if I was Dallas, I would keep him over can’t think of his name but the dude they got from the Raiders. Matt has brought up Anthony Miller – another trade I could buy into. Released veterans are also people that you can call during the season.

Amari Cooper.

They also drafted stud CeeDee Lamb.

Thanks – I am either getting sleepy, old, or doped up on medicine. Having problems remembering some names. Lamb and Gallup would be what I keep and get rid of Cooper.

Gallup was rumored to be on the trading block before the deadline last season.

Did not know that – would jump at the chance to get him. They most certainly are going to struggle to pay anyone with all the big contracts they have – from players not playing or performing.

I fully expect to get a veteran wide receiver and/or pass rusher before the season starts.

Having said what I did about evaluation – It is amazing how one game or one moment can impact what we think about a player. I use pros for this example simply because I watch much more NFL than college football.

Patrick Mahomes – I went from great pick to this dude is going to be great to this guy is going to be an all-time great after watching him in his first game against Denver. His composure against a tough defense with a supporting cast of backups pushed me over the edge.

Lamar Jackson – Watching his body language in his first playoff loss – he moped on the bench and he will never again become a leader in my mind. He gave up way before the end of the game.

Cam Newton – Not going after the fumble in the Super Bowl – actually backing away from the ball – told me all I needed to know about him. He does not have the heart of a champion.

My grade for each pick

Bolton – B: I like the idea of adding a speedy linebacker but there is too much I do not know about him for a higher grade

Creed – A: I think he has the chance to be the best Chiefs center ever as well as sending a message that we will move to a dominant line

KAINDOHPASS – C: I am okay with a project with those measurables at this point in the draft but he is a project

Gray – B: Versatile contributor in the fifth round – I like what he could bring to the table as an additional weapon in our arsenal

Powell – D: Nothing wow about this selection and I always try to find the upside. Would rather they had rolled the dice on a gamebreaker

Smith – A: Sixth round steal – The only thing that would bring this pick down is if the medical issue becomes a problem. Immediate potential starting guard.

BONUS
Brown – A: We pulled a great deal and got a good, young possible stud LT to address the biggest problem we had.

I honestly think you are underrating the potential of Powell. I think he was a better value pick than Kaindoh or Bolton.

I hope to hell that I am wrong cause I want all of our picks to be good ones. I can go with the KAINDOHPASS selection cause few defensive ends at that point possessed the high ceiling that he could have. With Bolton, I saw some great reaction with good football speed – albeit his highlights – thus, the deduction. With Powell, nothing I read or saw leads me to believe he could be special. Now, he could become one of those reliable hey I got open kind of guys – which I hope he does and will give him a chance to prove – but I cannot help but wonder if he will not be able to surpass Drob or Hardman on the depth chart.

That is precisely why I am not ranting and raving about it being a bad pick cause Andy > EAFOX. If I made the pick, I would have went for the 6’5 200+ sprinter/receiver from the small college. I would have swung for the fences in the sixth round. Powell sounds more like a base hit up the middle.

Mahomes and star NFL players get so much more exposure than even the most accomplished baseball players. Salvy having an accent does not help his cause. It takes all types to win – I hope everyone can shove this in my face as Powell comes thru for us big time.

Hopefully not a bias but you see all of his offensive line decisions earned an A from me cause, even if they do not work out, he gave every effort to make our line a dominant one. Bolton is the make or break one for an overall draft grade – which I would give as a B right now. If Bolton makes an impact by the beginning of next year – starting for Hitch as the Mike – then the grade could move to an A. If Bolton is a whiff, one of the others better be making a huge impact or the grade goes down.

Hey. Sorry I disappeared after my Hardman comment. I didn’t explain my thoughts very well.

I like Mecole more than most as a WR. But he seems to be unsure when fielding punts lately. He has routinely tried to return punts he should have fair caught. Then he will fair catch one inside the 10 he should let go. I think he has lost the confidence to make the right decision back there. Maybe an offseason working with Toub will fix it, but if we are truly counting on him to be a focal wideout, we need to limit his exposure on teams.

I can live with replacing him on teams – for his sake and ours. I do not dislike Hardman but am disappointed in his progress. I tend to think it is discipline – he was demoted at the beginning of the year. If the problem is discipline – watching enough film and mentally being in all of the reps and such – the question becomes is he simply too immature right now to truly understand how important that it or is he a prima donna dick head that thinks he does not need the work. Either way, he is destined for life as a third or fourth receiver until he changes something.

My pre-draft wishlist was a LB, C, TE, DE, WR, S, and CB.

We didn’t draft a corner, but instead drafted a 2nd round guard if he didn’t have medical issues in the 6th.

The only pick I am not real happy with is Kaindoh and it is more a personal opinion. I wanted a quick first step speed rusher. Instead we drafted another Frank Clark power rusher type.

My overall grade is an A. We are a much better team today, than we were two weeks ago.

Not sure what we have in BoPete Keyes so corner could be an area we should have addressed. Kaindoh – or KAINDOHPASS (our new KPASS) as I like to call him – could be a wasted pick. Boom or bust there. In a normal draft, I would be willing to draft two projects (not in the early rounds) to see what I could get. I do understand the argument about power vs speed. Both can be disruptive.

Our CBs right now is:
Ward (solid)
Sneed(great)
Baker(solid, but improving)
Fenton(adequate, but could improve)
Keyes(unknown)

I would rather bring back Breeland, than try to add another player to develop right now.

Baker.

Broke his femur. The doctors said it was about as best case scenario for that type of injury. They don’t expect it to be a problem, it was just a flukish thing.

He was a high first round pick of the NYG, but got accused of robbery after his rookie year by a group of guys.

Then he got cut by the Giants, only to have the group of guys recant their accusations. (It was a messed up extortion plot)

We picked him up cheap and have him under contract for a couple more years.

Breeland, Ward and Sneed were hard to beat – I still want Breeland back. Baker and Fenton can press the others for playing time.

My thought on projects – we will take the first year to teach you, you need to contribute somehow in your second year, and you have to be an effective starter in your third year. KPASS did have the wasted year under Sutton as did most of the defensive newcomers but I do not think that he was as bad as many claim him to be. He was an adequate starter at DE and certainly put hustle into his play. Not enough to justify drafting him that high but not the bust he is made out to be. IF he was a bust, so was our entire defensive line last year.

A pretty legitimate point but the NFL people get paid good money to make their best predictions – in a field where you are pretty awesome if you hit a good one 50% of the time. A fair follow up question would be how much of an impact did the COVID season have on draft selection. That can only be partially answered now – we have to wait a couple of years to see the full result and even that would not produce the most accurate results.

We signed an All Pro LG in Thuney and drafted a potential star RG in Smith. 4 years of line stability will allow us to focus on the rest of the team with almost all our draft resources. Sure we will need to always have our eyes open for value and depth, but we can attack a different position group next year with the same gusto.

This draft/offseason has given us a head start on next year.

Our first decision with this line of the future will be how long do we keep Thuney on an expensive contract under the assumption that the others keep developing. We know we will get a new contract for Brown and then we wait until Niang comes up into free agency. Definitely agree with your point. Ideally, we stay ahead of the curve so we do not move into another off season with this many questions.

Possibly let him play it out. When it is over it will be time to sign Niang, Humphrey, and Smith. Then it is time for a new cycle of players.

Because Niang opted out, this is the first year of his rookie contract.

Extend them before big contract time could help down the line.

Yes. Kaindoh is a project…who is always injured. Not sure why roll the dice on that.
