The Wild took down the Caps, so I’m happy. Back into the second WC spot, but with what, 7 games left to go, they’re gonna have to keep scratching and clawing to keep it. And I just can’t say enough about how I like the way Greenway’s coming along. He’s really learning to put all that length to good use, especially to be a bit of a puck pirate.

Now’s the time for them to be working on it. Don’t know about y’all’s arena, but dang, are those East Coast crowds quiet. Caps’ tonight was an exception, but after being a Chiefs fan for so long and compared to the XL Center in the ‘Cities, it’s like every ticket comes with a heavy dose of Valium, free of charge. SMH

For some reason I was looking at the Detroit Lions PFR page, and found two incredible sad facts.

1) The Chiefs have won the division 3 times in a row the last 3 years. The Lions have won their division 3 times since the merger.

2) Their all-time winningest coach has a record of 66-67. (I also am looking at the Jets since I signed up to do their pick in the mock draft, and their all-time winningest coach also has a losing record.)

Same here. Wife and I had just gotten back from church and I turned on the TV to see the fourth quarter. I was so glad we won, and my wife was so glad that she got to demonstrate the opposite of my superstition: they don’t need me to be watching them to win.

I’m not superstitious, but I’m a little stititous.

Victory of the Week: After much arm-twisting, I went to my church’s men’s small group/Bible study on Wednesday night, for the first time. I knew one of the guys (the guy who had been wheedling me to go along in the first place), but hadn’t met the others. Gotta say they’re a pretty good, trustworthy group of guys, and – at first glance, anyway – they all appear to have put their money where their mouth is.

Unwinding tonight with some late 70s doom metal.

A small group of guys. Most churches have small groups for various stages of life – men, women, married, young professionals, college kids, senior citizens, etc.

Most small groups are just a bunch of people who get together and hang out. We offer one another encouragement and do a Bible study and things like that.

It sounds boring to most people, who would rather spend their Wednesday nights doing literally anything else, but as someone who wants to engage more deeply with my faith, I enjoy doing Bible study – alone or with 3-4 other people. It’s amazing the insights you can get.

Thanks man. Definitely feels good to be in one again, even if I can’t attend as much as I would like.

The last one that my wife and I were in didn’t really do anything for us. It was basically social hour. I get that there’s some degree of socialization involved (usually in the first part, before the Bible study kicks in), but this last group we were in wanted to spend five minutes on Bible study and two hours shooting the breeze. And when we did study it, it seemed to be heavily watered down.

I imagine there’s a fine line you have to walk between socializing and actual Bible study. In order to connect with people mentally, emotionally, etc., I think you need to have the social aspect. Unfortunately, like you said, some people are ONLY interested in that. Heck, I admit I’d probably be guilty of that too, especially early on. It’s so easy if you’re getting together with a group in the evening or on the weekends to want to do a “life update.” And until everyone’s filled in the details of their week, two hours are up! Human nature, I guess.

I’m guilty of it too, so no worries. I think you’re right, it is part of the human condition.

This new small group (and new church) does require a brief social aspect/weekly update, but it seems like if hanging out is the only interest, there are other times for that (i.e. bowling on Sundays, which we used to do at our old church, or Super Smash Brothers Saturday). This group is good at keeping on track.

There’s also this one of a different song. It’s not the guy from Disturbed (nor the same chick as before), but this cover is decent in its own right.

I hear that. I was really familiar with the old area, and I love watching storm updates. Unfortunately (and surprisingly), I only saw three tornado warnings in my many years, and only one of them dropped a tornado – at that point I was nine years old, and my dad didn’t want to do something stupid like drive into it. (Plus it only lasted a second or two.)

I moved last summer and am embarrassingly unacquainted with this area, to the point that I can’t tell what counties are near mine when the spaghetti hits the fan – as it did last week. I just need to dedicate some time to learning the area. Probably won’t chase here, though; people drive like a Meat Loaf album* even on a good day, so I’d hate to think how they are doing when the weather is less than good.

For the believers, as well, actually. Not to mention followers of other faiths.

The most dangerous people are meddling do-gooders who are going to help people whether they want it or not. Criminals can get bored or lazy, but not a do-gooder on a mission to “help” people. Theocracy is that scaled up to government size, and you will do as it decrees, because it’s for your own good. Not least because if you don’t, they might kill you over it.

Christians in Saudi Arabia (of which there are few) can attest to this. Saudi Arabia, of course, is a theocracy masquerading as a kingdom.

http://www.limerickcitychurch.com/blog/sara-fatima-al-mutairi-christian-martyr-from-saudi-arabia-2008

For those who don’t know, not being a hardline Sunni Muslim in Saudi Arabia is asking for trouble, and not being a Sunni Muslim in Saudi Arabia is basically the period at the end of your death sentence.

I am. While there can be terrible tyrannies, tyrants die and things change. Theocracies, however, don’t depend on an individual, they depend on institutions, one notable example of that being the Inquisition. It stuck around for a long time and did extremely un-Christian things to people in the name of God and Church.

Also theocracies tent to require virtuous behaviors from their subjects, like tithing, attending religious services, and so on. At the most extreme, they can get to the point where virtually everything is required or forbidden. After all, it’s whatever god’s will is, and who can object to that? (From the gov’t POV).

I agree with you. A theocracy is a terrible idea. That being said, they’re a decent power metal band, if that’s your thing.

My musical tastes are eclectic, whimsical, and occasionally bizarre*, so I’m not really heavy into anything in particular.

*If you envision Devo based on “Whip It”, you’re selling them short. Their album Q: Are We not men? A: We are Devo, aka question/answer or Q & A is a much better representation of what they were about than that song. Of course, if you don’t care for techno from back on the bleeding edge of development and a vision of a dystopian future, they ain’t for you.

The thing that doesn’t really come through with “Whip It” is that it’s satire- and irony-laden, right down to the overly-enthusiastic delivery of work-hard slogans. If an album’s too big a bite, try Mongoloid, Blockhead, or especially Beautiful World. Just a suggestion.

Thanks. I’ll have to check them out. New wave/proto-techno really aren’t my jam (for lack of a better word) – the Cars notwithstanding – but I may have to go back and give “Q/A” a listen.

I’m more into blues rock, hard rock, and early metal – from the 1970s. I also listen to a lot of Christian heavy metal, in part because I’ve helped so many of the bands set up/tear down their equipment, and in doing so have gotten to meet many of them. Genuinely great people in most of those groups (As I Lay Dying of course being a notable exception, though I never met them and haven’t listened to them since 2010).

You betcha. Two more things about them, one is that while the music side is good, they are really more lyrics-driven. The other is that you have to keep in mind that back in the day, people basically expected the world to end in a nuclear holocaust. I expect they got into the movie Heavy Metal largely because of their dystopian view of the future, artistically speaking.

Nothing wrong with dystopia; Rush’s “2112” is one of my favorite songs (the rest of the album, while decent, doesn’t hold a candle to that song), and I would argue that “The Wall” is dystopian, if not only in a personal sense.

It’s the weird repetitive rhythms behind (what I have experienced as) techno/New Wave that get to me. There’s very little artistic expression in the music anymore. To me, that’s when music started to die.

While the wall uses somewhat dystopian imagery, it’s symbolic only. The story is all about mental illness.

Not the plane crash that did in Holly, Valens, and the Big Bopper? 😉 More seriously, it isn’t techno, etc. that turned most music industry stuff into a bunch of formulas, it was the corporate takeover of just about everything. MBAs and accountants don’t value creativity or artistry, they value predictability and manageability. The only thing that delivers those is a formulaic approach.

For the rest, I suspected you weren’t a fan of the sounds, which is why I suggested you primarily focus on the lyrics. One of Devo’s characteristics is pairing upbeat music with some pretty dark lyrics. I suspected they wanted that jarring contrast in their style.

Fair enough! When I go back and check them out again I’ll keep that in mind.

Budgie did that too. Some of the heaviest metal of its day from a band named after a parakeet.

Thinking on it, Beautiful World might be the textbook example of their lyrical approach. It begins “It’s a beautiful world we live in, sweet romantic place; beautiful people everywhere, the way they show they care, makes me want to say, it’s a beautiful world…”.

So upbeat it’s almost sappy, right? Like Walking on Sunshine (one of my guilty-pleasure faves, BTW) is? So upbeat there’s no ceiling room left? Well then, that means there’s only one direction they can take the story, amIrite? And they do, in spades.

I used to go to Christian shows all the time in High School. They were the only shows I was allowed to go to back then , lol

Trivia note: Mark Motherbaugh, the front man for Devo, was the musical director for the cartoon Rugrats. I find the dichotomy amusing.

He also wrote the score for The Lego Movie, among others.

Yes, yes she is. Unfortunately when she speaks she sounds like she has laryngitis.

The Lakers and LeBron James might be eliminated from the playoffs tonight. I’ll definitely be watching and hoping they are.

Any time Lebron suffers, I feel this warm fuzzy feeling. He’s such a douche.
