Chiefs Unrestricted Free Agents

First things first, an Unrestricted Free Agent, or UFA, are players who’s contracts are due to expire, and have four or more accrued seasons of service. Once Free Agency begins, they are free to sign with any team. Here is the list of UFA’s for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs have until March 13th to re-sign their own Free Agents before the official start of Free Agency. Of course with the new NFL rules, teams can begin “legally tampering” with other players beginning March 11th. For more important offseason dates, check the AG Offseason Calendar.

While the number of players the Chiefs have currently headed towards free agency isn’t abnormally large, the percentage of players who started games for the Chiefs this last year seems unnaturally high. Of the 16 players the Chiefs have entering free agency, 13 of them started at least one game for the team on offense, defense, or special teams. Granted, many of those starts were due to injury, but most of them still turned in quality starts.

Of the players listed, Ford and Sherman seem the most likely to be re-signed, or in Ford’s case franchise tagged at a minimum. I think a case could be made that the team isn’t quite prepared to replace Bailey or Ware at the moment if they can be re-signed on quality depth contracts. I would also like to see De’Anthony Thomas and Jordan Devey brought back on vet-minimum type contracts, and I doubt either will be receiving large amounts of interest on the free market.

Everyone else I am indifferent to. Sound off Arrowhead guys, who are you willing to pay for, who would you like to bring back if the price is right, and who do you never want to see on the field again?

I kinda think a healthy DAT could make some noise on this offense. After his weed arrest he should be amenable to a vet minimum deal.

Looks like there is going to be some hefty turnover this year. Other than Ford, possibly Bailey/Morse, most of that list won’t be missed. I would argue that entire list could be turned over without regret.

It’d be nice to keep Sherman. Honestly, as many guys that contributed in the offense as possible would be nice to have back. Apart from Ford (hopefully they can have a place for him… far from the line of scrimmage, though I don’t know what that would mean for him) I imagine most of these guys will be allowed to sprout wings and fly.

The only guys that I think will be missed if they’re not brought back, or it might be a bit difficult/expensive to replace them are:
Bailey, Ford, Morse, Nelson

Everyone else, in terms of on field success, I don’t really care about. They’re either shit, or easily and cheaply replaced. Or could be brought back for close to the minimum.

DAT needs to stay. I’d also extend Bailey a small contract unless we are dead set on his replacement in an early draft round.
Morse should be offered a small contract — his concussion history scares me (for his sake) and I don’t think another organization would treat him properly should another situation arise.
Ford is staying. Book it.
Not sure I’d offer Benjamin anything substantial. Pat made Robinson look good. Hill/Kelce/Robinson/DAT/5th rounder would be good enough, I think. If Benjamin is adamant about being with a Superbowl contender he will sign cheap.
Jeff Allen over Devey.
Love ya Sherm, but if we need cap space you’re gonna have to go

Why does dat need to stay he’s injury-prone also if only because he’s about as big around as a toothpick.

Also if Sherman will come back somewhere in the 1.5 million range I think the possibility of saving more than half a million is pretty remote I also think the possibility of someone else paying him more than that is pretty remote.

Draft a guy and sign a FA and still have money to spend for cost of Bailey
Harris either gets cheaper or gets replaced.
Morse needs to do team friendly deal with games played bonuses to protect for next concussion that likely ends his career
Chark or Ware will likely be back at close to veterans minimum
Benjamin could be an interesting case…..Pat will be best QB he has played with and might be enticed to get @$$ in shape and do a incentive loaded prove it deal with shot @ SB and big $ contract the following year, particularly if Conley and Day aren’t back
Dee Ford isn’t going anywhere……Guy with most pressures in league isn’t getting left of new defensive guys heavy pressure scheme

If I were the GM ( all should thank God I’m not) I’d bring back some of these guys for the right price.

Ford, tag him or if he would take it 14 max per year for 3 years.
Sherman, 4 year deal with 1.5 the first 2 years and 2 the next 2 years.
Harris basically same as Sherman’s he probably will not take it and that’s fine.
Allen Bailey up to 4 per year, up to 4 years he might not take it either, but that’s the way it goes.
Steven Nelson 4-5 a year again went take it, if he will for a long term contract at near same money do it might be able to trade if nothing else.
Deavy and Allen 1-1.5 per year for 2 years

That’s it sorry DAT you are brittle but I do like ya.

It kinda depends. This should probably be a comp pick year, given that list. Tag and trade Ford, you can probably get a 2nd, MAYBE even a first. Several guys in there could see contracts relevant to the formula. It doesn’t seem like we’re necessarily well positioned to refill the holes we would create though, which suggests poor forethought. The Patriots have 12 picks I think, after winning the Owl again. That is forethought, and what I expect out of our GM going forward. If you are going to approach it like every other GM, you see a window in Pats cheap years and you want to win the Owl. If you are going to approach it like BB you see a nice haul of comp picks for players that aren’t necessarily hard to replace. I don’t know that I trust Veach to be good enough to build a dynasty, so I guess I keep guys like Ford (tag), probably Sherm. Maybe Allen at the right price. Maybe Nelson. MAYBE.

That’s hard to say exactly what they could get for him but one thing’s for sure a lot of teams are willing to give up draft picks for good pass-rushers I could see a second-rounder being in the mix.

But is he good? That’s the problem. He’s been inconsistent and has had only one good year on top of being often injured. I think teams would be willing to pay money on a gamble, but mortgaging your future and then paying money on a gamble is pretty significantly more risky. Is it possible? Sure, someone could technically be that stupid to risk that much on an unproven asset. I just highly doubt it.

I say franchise tag Ford, sign Sausage, hopefully Ware and Morse would be team friendly deals due to injuries they’ve had but keep them if money makes sense. DAT, Devey, Nelson, Bailey & Conley only if on the cheap. I would also be OK with dumping any of these if there is an upgrade we know we’ll get.

I also hope Houston would be willing to restructure.

Of course Houston would restructure.

Restructuring a contract means turning a season’s worth of game checks into one big bonus payment at the beginning of the season, and making it more difficult for the team to cut you in the future because of the dead money created by that restructure bonus. So, which player wouldn’t want that?

Lots of potential for comp picks on that list. Bailey, Harris, Conley, Nelson, and Morse will all be signed to contracts much larger than we should sign them to.
Don’t forget how much Albert Wilson got paid by Miami last year.

BoJest
02/06/2019 1:18 pm

The only ones I’d keep would be Ford on the tag..Sherman, Devey, Allen…. Benjamin on the cheap. Morse is a question mark. Not sure how Bailey will fit the new defense but may be a cap cut. The rest can be easily replaced. I know Nelson ended up being rated high but gets way too many penalties and I think his neck has been surgically fused together.

I think Bailey would be Jones’ backup at 3-tech on a 4-3-under Dline, from what little I’ve recently read about it. But, they might also use him in nickel/dime formations, and maybe even as a SDE backup, enough that he’d end up getting a lot of snaps despite not being an official starter.

Bailey only on 1 year deal. Contract year Bailey is far superior than noncontract year Bailey.

Should make the unpopular decision to bring back Nelson.

Harris is interesting too. He’s gotten better every year as a TE but damn the brain farts are infuriating. Plus we don’t have anybody behind Kelce.

Ford should probably be tagged. I wouldn’t mind Morse coming back but I’m not going to cry over him or anybody else on this list.

I respect that. But I see special teams as about 10% of the total, or a fourth of either offense or defense. There are some players who really shine on ST but not in offense or defense and I’d feel negligent if I didn’t listen to that. DAT might be in that group, for example, even though a weak gust of wind can tackle him.

You do not need to be a genius with it. though you do need to be smart with it. you can’t just live on it and nothing else. $1M is a significant enough amount that you don’t need huge returns on investments. That’s more than enough to supplement a simple job to make your life comfortable. Not lavish. Comfortable.

This is stupid it’s not greed to try and learn as much as you can if so I expect you to go into work tomorrow and tell them you’d like to only make $10 an hour. Because surely if you’re good with your money you can live on that since at $10 an hour you would probably make close to a million dollars in your life. FYI $10 an hour at exactly 40 hours a week for 45 years is 936000.

These guys are in the top tax bracket for the short time in their lives that they can make this kind of money also their agent is getting a decent percent of that along with every hanger on that can possibly get a nickel. Everyone for the sake of themselves and their family should make as much as they can in their life then if they want to be a good citizen and help people out I highly recommend it.

You are missing what I’m saying. First there is a big difference between $10 an hour and $1M. Second, I didn’t say I blamed them for trying to get more. Hell I want more in life. But that desire for wealth is the very definition of greed. Like I said, it’s human nature. I’m just saying it’s not necessary to live by the idea that you need to get every penny you can possibly get to live comfortably for the rest of your life.

It’s also human nature to be irrationally resentful against people you don’t know at all, and to let that make you count those other peoples’ money with your feelings instead of with your brain.

If you use a calculator instead of feelings, then you’ll find that the biggest difference between $10/hour for life and $1 million for one year, is that the $10/hour guy will get to keep a lot more of his money instead of paying it out in taxes.

I cant decide if you are serious or not. You know these are completely unrealistic numbers, right?

Ford’s franchise tag would be 15-16m, so that’s the floor for him. You may think he should just be allowed to walk as a result, but then you might as well just say “I don’t want Ford for the money he will cost.”

Nelson will make twice that on the open market. Sherman made 2m this year, why would he take a 50% paycut? Bailey made 6m and you want him to take an 85% pay cut?!
