Is This Reality?
The Bills offense opened the game with a field goal after converting a 4th down attempt at midfield and avoiding a near-pick by Juan Thornhill. The Chiefs were unable to respond as a 30 yard gain slipped through Tyreek Hill’s fingers, forcing a 3-and-out. The defense forced a punt on the following drive to no avail, as Mecole Hardman muffed a punt at the 3 yard line and Buffalo recovered it. One play later the Bills were in the endzone, but missed the PAT giving them a 9-0 lead.
Feeling more comfortable with his team behind by two scores, Patrick Mahomes led a classic Chiefs drive, going 80 yards featuring Kelce and Hill before giving Hardman a 3 yard charity touchdown so he didn’t get mauled in the parking lot. Following a Bills punt the Chiefs offense drove 82 yards for another score, this time featuring a 50 yard Hardman end around and capped off by 6 yard Darrell Williams rush to the goal line. The Bills, in turn, answered with a punt, a sure-fire winning strategy. The Chiefs, doing Chiefs things, went 77 yards this time before Clyde Edwards-Helaire punched it in from the one. The Bills were able to tack on a field goal making it 21-12 at half time.
The second half opened with first the Chiefs, then the Bills, exchanging field goals before Tyreek Hill took over and ran 145 yards on a 71 yard catch and run to set up a nifty shovel pass touchdown to Travis Kelce. On the Bills next drive Rashad Fenton stepped in front of a Josh Allen pass for the interception, and 11 plays later Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a 5 yard touchdown despite losing Eric Fisher to an ankle injury.
The Bills answered with a touchdown to pull within 17, and recovered the subsequent onsides kick attempt to set their offense up with a short field. The drama was just beginning as Allen was sacked and threw the ball at Alex Okafor, who got up looking to do some jawing when the Bills OL came in and smeared him, leading to a 15 minute conference in which all 22 players were given offsetting penalties and the Bills punted, effectively ending the game.
