Week 5 NFL Power Rankings

The official Arrowhead Guys NFL Power Rankings.

Tier 1: The Super Bowl Contenders

1: Los Angeles Rams (Last Week: 2)

2: Buffalo Bills (Last Week: 4)
3: Arizona Cardinals (Last Week: 5)
4: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last Week: 6)
5: Kansas City Chiefs (Last Week: 1)
6: Green Bay Packers (Last Week: 3)

These teams are still tough to sort out, and you can really put them in any order. So instead of trying to come up with convoluted reasons why I should put one team over the other I’ll just use the space to talk about the team we all care about, the Kansas City Chiefs.

While the drop looks dramatic in the rankings, it really isn’t. It’s still the case that a lot of our struggles are things that tend to be flukey, and if we regress to the mean we should go back to being the best team in the NFL.

But what this drop signifies is a shift in my view, from giving them the benefit of the doubt that this regression to the mean will happen, to now wanting them to prove it before I believe it. The defense has just been so bad that, while in theory it should naturally improve from sheer luck, there’s been no signs of it yet.

Tier 2: The Playoff Contenders

7: Baltimore Ravens (Last Week: 7)
8: Dallas Cowboys (Last Week: 8)
9: Pittsburgh Steelers (Last Week: 9)
10: Cleveland Browns (Last Week: 10)
11: San Francisco 49ers (Last Week: 11)
12: Los Angeles Chargers (Last Week: 12)
13: Philadelphia Eagles (Last Week: 13)
14: Tennessee Titans (Last Week: 15)

This is why I have resisted putting the Ravens in the contender category. This was a bad game no doubt, but I’m willing to dismiss it as a fluke and not drop them (yet).

Tier 3: The Less-Than-Good Teams

15: New England Patriots (Last Week: 16)
16: Las Vegas Raiders (Last Week: 17)
17: Minnesota Vikings (Last Week: 18)
18: Denver Broncos (Last Week: 19)
29: Chicago Bears (Last Week: 29)
25: Cincinnati Bengals (Last Week: 24)

The Bears and Bengals get promotions, as they had decent outings last week. I still don’t quite buy the Bengals, but playing the Packers tough is hard to ignore.

22: New Orleans Saints (Last Week: 22)
20: Washington Football Team (Last Week: 20)
21: Atlanta Falcons (Last Week: 21)
23: Carolina Panthers (Last Week: 23)
14: Seattle Seahawks (Last Week: 14)

It’s hard to know exactly how far the Seahawks will fall without Russell Wilson. The conventional wisdom is that Wilson has been carrying the Seahawks basically by himself the past couple years, but I’m not so sure of that. If the Seahawks look competent with Geno Smith it will damage his legacy worse that he damaged his finger.

Tier 4: The Terrible Teams

26: Detroit Lions (Last Week: 25)
27: Indianapolis Colts (Last Week: 26)
28: New York Giants (Last Week: 27)

I feel bad for the Lions. They’re basically a lesser version of the Chiefs. They have performed at a level well above their 0-5 record, but they just can’t catch a break.

Tier 5: The Rookie Quarterbacks

24: Miami Dolphins (Last Week: 28)
30: Jacksonville Jaguars (Last Week: 30)
31: New York Jets (Last Week: 31)
32: Houston Texans (Last Week: 32)

Is it just me, or are the Dolphins not getting enough attention as a bad team? Like you could argue they’re the worst team in the NFL right now, but the Jaguars and Jets are getting most of the attention for being bad.

Next 3 games are absolutely critical. Theyre against crap teams. If we lose to the WFT, Tenn, or NJ giants, Im going to be very worried. Need to get that mojo back playing subpar competition.

Just don’t tell the Chiefs they are sub-par. We need them ready to play hard.

Right now we are at the bottom tier 2.

It’s hard not to drop the Chiefs into the gutter from the last performance, but with half of the team ranking the last in the league, in my opinion 5 is too generous. I’d drop us to 10. I can’t judge on potential, just what’s going on this season. The talent is there but it’s not being utilized.

9-10 sounds about right. If you’re another team who would you rather play? Chiefs or the steelers? Rather play the steelers right. I think right now youd probably rather face the chiefs than that top tier plus the chargers, browns and maybe the ravens.

Hopefully, this last game was a wake up call. I feel like the first couple of losses the players/coaches played lip service to “our backs are against the wall.” This loss felt different. The bills kicked our butts and unlike the chargers game where we dug ourselves a hole with TOs, the TOs this game mostly came after we had had our butts kicked all game.

I’d put us at tier 2, outside of the top 10.

If our defense was average, Tony, then maybe you’d be right at #5. But half our team is worst in the NFL.

Hahaha, I was wondering if we were still going to be at the number one spot….
Moved down to 5 , which I still find comical.. what a strange start to the season. I don’t think anybody could’ve predicted this mess. But as they say ,it’s not over till it’s over…but we are running out of time to get this ship turned in the right direction….

This list makes no sense, but it’s good to be a homer. 😁

It does, if he has been listening to Black Oak Arkansas.

5? the Chiefs at number 5?!?!?

Today, right now, we belong in Tier 2 because I’m a homer. If I’m not, Tier 3 at the top. No team with e Defense giving up historical yardage per play can be considered otherwise. If, as you say, you’re taking the long view, I still can’t do better than 2. I’m not sure where the improvement comes from on D. On O, just hold on to the damn ball.

about 12-15 right now, IMO … the Chiefs can still win the Division and even the Conference, but need to get it together fast and keep it together for the remainder of the season … losses to the Chargers and Bills hurt, but the “big picture” is that there’s a long, long ways to go and the Chiefs CAN get to where they (and we) want … in time, and if (a huge if, maybe) they start playing as they did in 2019 and 2020

a nice win streak would work, like say the next 12 regular season games … to start with

The homer in me knows this will happen. The fan in me knows that, for the moment, the league has Patrick figured out & it might take more than a game or two for Reid to come up with a decent counter. The cold hearted realist in me knows that it won’t matter if this D continues on its current path

You’re obviously right. This post is fucking pathetic. This team is not playing well right now. And it’s not only the defense. Mahomes is playing at a barely above average level this far this season. I’m confident he’ll rebound, but this team has a lot of work to do. We’ll be lucky to make the playoffs at this point.
