Pet peeve: I wonder if all the people who say “hone in on” received the new expression via a flock of honing pigeons.

Brett can’t get out of his own way.
Now we find out his charity gave more to So. Miss athletics than it gave to any other group. The stated purpose of his foundation is to support “underserved and disabled children and breast cancer patients”

Got lucky again, rain and wind gusts may hit 40 tomorrow, possible tornados from storm bands, but nothing serious. Had like 16 tornados yesterday, some trees down, planes flipped over or unpopulated areas.
The local news was tripping over themselves, newest radar can detect airborne debris, seems it was just palm fronds and shingles. Still dangerous

I don’t think so. Tampa didn’t take the direct blow, but it depends on the area and damage. If the immediate area is a mess and having the game would further stress the recourses, then they will/should move it.

Corrections officers have become so difficult to hire and retain that robots may end up doing the job.
Employers are scrambling to find teachers and health care professionals but nearly all 50 states have long struggled to bring in enough security guards to oversee the nation’s prison population of 1.2 million people. And in recent months the vacancy rates have skyrocketed as officers — frustrated by low pay, violent conditions, long hours, isolated work locations and routine exposure to Covid-19 — quit in droves.

.7% of the US is incarcerated – 7/1000. It may be a higher rate than the other countries but its not 20% of the world’s rate. It’s also dropped quite a bit lately since no one goes to jail anymore.

See the International Prison Publications page. The latest World Prison Population List, published in December 2021, reports that there may well be in excess of 11.5 million prisoners worldwide.

The United States is the world’s leader in incarceration. There are 2 million people in the nation’s prisons and jails—a 500% increase over the last 40 years. Changes in sentencing law and policy, not changes in crime rates, explain most of this increase.

I’m not sure what that stat is supposed to mean though- heck, in many countries you have crime running rampant and no one will arrest them – look at mexico, I’m sure they are proud of their low incarceration rate… sometimes people aren’t arrested because they don’t have laws or enforcement in a country. Having a prison population is part of trying to have a safe society. Otherwise you have what’s going on now in the larger cities – people freely going into stores and steeling whatever they want, murder rates climbing everywhere.. when people deserve to be in prison but we turn them loose, innocent people pay the price.

“when people deserve to be in prison, and we will do anything to send them to prison, justice optional, innocent people pay the price.”

And don’t tell me they should cooperate and sue later. Such lawsuits seldom succeed, because of Qualified Immunity, which got on cop off after he jumped on the hood of a stopped car, and then “fearing for his life”, emptied his gun into the driver an passenger, then reloaded at least once to clear another mag – maybe twice. Walked free from that needless killing. Do you support officers and policies like that?

“since no one goes to jail anymore.”

That’s completely untrue, even as an exaggeration. Also, DOJ’s supposed to be collecting statistics on those who die in prison or are killed by police, and both are severe undercounts. Since the DOJ doesn’t lean on police or prisons to cough up the accurate numbers, we can’t be certain of the actual death-in-custody total.

Those are human beings who were not sentenced to life in prison, let alone death, but those concerned with numbers don’t see them as people. And don’t get me started about how the current bail setup is all about holding legally innocent (though not always literally innocent, TBF) people in cells because they’re too poor to be a flight risk/post bail over minor charges, so bye-bye job, maybe home and car, sometimes even family. Let the punishment begin before the crime, to force them to take plea bargains, even if they’re innocent or not guilty of the additionally stacked changes. Who wants to double down on that system?

hoosierchief
Reply to  BleedingRedAndGold

okay, how about that guy that just admitted he ran over a college kid and killed him because he didn’t like his politics. he was released within 24 hours. I bet that kids family felt great. There are all kinds of violent criminals being arrested and set free and they do it again before they even have a hearing on their initial crime. The victims are human beings too. unless they defend themselves, then they get arrested.

BleedingRedAndGold

“All kinds of violent criminals being arrested and set free”? Really? How many? Did this one post bail? How many people are locked up for nonviolent crimes, because they can’t make bail? What are the actual numbers?

I’m afraid that your assertion’s focused on a rare red herring, my friend, but if you insist that you don’t need to know everything that I know about the system, there’s no basis for a productive discussion. All you keep saying is that more and more people need to be locked up, particularly the poor over minor charges. You like wrecking those lives before trial? Leave me out.

The Biden administration moved Wednesday to allow a non-U.S. flagged ship to transport fuel to Puerto Rico, following pressure to waive a rule in the face of a diesel shortage after Hurricane Fiona.
The decision to make came in “response to urgent and immediate needs of the Puerto Rican people in the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona … to ensure that the people of Puerto Rican have sufficient diesel to run generators needed for electricity and the functioning critical facilities,” Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement Wednesday.

Mayorkas called the limited waiver for a BP vessel “temporary and targeted.”

The Department of Homeland Security’s choice to suspend the Jones Act — which typically allows only U.S.-flagged ships to transport maritime cargo between U.S. ports — will allow additional diesel into Puerto Rico, days after the territory was hit by Hurricane Fiona.

Andy Reid usually will get things fixed quickly.

If we have a ton of penalties one game, the next game we have hardly any. If our ST sucks ass one week, the next week they are really good. Etc.

We see this multiple times per year from Reid-led teams.
