The Day After, An Open Thread
256 repliesA thread to discuss the aftermath of Super Bowl LV
By now you are likely familiar with the fact that the Chiefs lost to the Bucs in SBLV in dramatic fashion. Our OL was a sieve, the defense was porous, nobody could catch, the officiating was horrendous, the punter was broke, and Patrick Mahomes was running for his life seemingly every single play. Nobody really wants to write any articles on a day like this, so we’re taking it light as we wrap our minds around this loss.
So today we’ll just talk about feelings. Or whatever. Prior to the game, I was fairly sure a loss wouldn’t hurt as much because of winning the Super Bowl last year. That, in fact, turned out to be true. This loss wasn’t nearly as traumatic as other post-season games I’ve experienced in my life time. Yeah, I hated seeing Brady get another ring, but really no more than any other time he’s won. So yeah, it sucks, but I’m alright, because we’re still Super Bowl champs.
So take this thread as an opportunity to discuss how you’re handling the loss. Or whatever you’d like.
Carry On, Arrowhead Guys!
This tweet from below
Obviously when you see that you think about how Mahomes was running for his life all game, the OL sucked, and the game plan to not have any help was terrible.
But what about the other side of it? We had 5 total QB pressures all game. 5! The worst team in the NFL for QB pressures, the Detroit Lions, averaged 6.6 pressures per game for the season. We were worse at generating pressure than the worst team in the NFL at generating pressure.
Pathetic.
I was told we don’t need to worry about the DL cause Chris Jones and Frank Clark has some record for post season sacks.
I felt the same way, not as painful this year after winning the big one a year ago.
It would have been so much easier to handle if it was anyone else but Brady.
And Gronk. Shit.
Fuck.
Yeah, that sucked the worst for sure.
Nate pretty much summed up everything in this comment
The thing I’ll add is more should be made of the horrendous decision to take timeouts before the half. Tommy’s horrible 27 yard punt had just basically gifted TB a touchdown, giving them the ball at our 38 yard line. We follow that up with a FG to cut it back to an 8 point (1 score game). We could have taken that into the half, and come out in the second half with some confidence and tried to tie the game up, but instead some idiot decided to get cute and try to get the ball back.
It was so obvious before it even happened that if they converted on that 3rd down they were going to bomb it long and hope for PI. It was such a stupid low percentage play to try to get the ball back. Even if we did get the ball back, the offense had managed 6 points so far. They were suddenly going to go 80+ yards with 40 seconds and no timeouts? Just get the the half down 8 and make adjustments (hahaha) and score after the half.
That decision to take the timeouts killed us more than anything (aside from the overall terrible game plan).
I called them losers when they ran on 1st down. Then I was like whats going on, what did Andy do, no no no no!
I was so relieved when they ran it and appeared to be happy to just get to the half also. Then, fuck.
As much as Tom Brady is an overrated piece of shit, you don’t give him the ball near mid field with 40 seconds and nothing to lose. Andy must have forgotten to review the TB/GB game.
What I need to know, is, by the defined standards established with first half game play, how is this not defensive holding?
1) Refs had decided they were not going to throw flags by that point
2) That would have only been a flag if TB was on offense
I don’t see the point in watching anymore.
First mock of the year!
Will be interesting to see how these boards change as we progress. No combine is gonna make scouting crazy.
This what you want, or what you think Veach will do?
Just what was available and went with best by need. No trades or anything, just first run at it.
Where do you mock?
https://thedraftnetwork.com/mock-draft-machine
I play on first-pick.com
I usually do mine based off what I think Veach will realistically do.
So when evaluating your’s, I don’t think he’s taking 3 OL or a LB in the 2nd round.
You think there are zero LBs? I think Veach would be stupid not to try and find a good, young, cheap LB.
I wouldn’t say 0. We do have 3 5th round picks, but I don’t think LB will be a priority. We’re married to Hitch ATM and have pinned our hope on Gay. A 3rd LB is not as important to Spags as a 3rd S or CB because they probably play more snaps.
welp, a few myths got BUSTED …
Mahomes is a god! no, he’s completely human …
Reid can beat ANYONE if he has an extra week to plan! ummmmmmmmm … whatever
Travis Kelce is THE best TE in the NFL … except when he isn’t
The Chiefs have SO many weapons that the offense is virtually unstoppable!!! great, when football is a completely “VIRTUAL” game, as in Madden, then yeah, maybe … on the field? not so much
==================================================================================
if nothing else, this puts a definite end to Mahomes is the GOAT! talk (it should) … look, the kid is great, he has incredible talent, BUT … yeah, so it went and so it goes
I think what “bothered” me was seeing Mahomes sitting on the sidelines at times as if he didn’t care … the whole offense seem to play with a lack of … everything: no cohesion, no timing, no sense of urgency, so sense of even belonging on the field
then there was the incredibly undisciplined defense, and whine all you want to about the officiating, Jone and Mathieu cost the team on more than one occasion … they played with heart, but not much smarts, and allowed the Bucs to get into their heads
===================================================================================
lessons learned? we shall see … there will be other seasons, others great games, etc etc … at this point, the big question is: when is kickoff?
You seem happy, dude. Weird.
I think he’s actually Teicher
Bro, Mahomes and Kelce were about the only guys that were worth anything in that game. I think your anger is misplaced.
I’m really tired of the “…but Mahomes’ weapons!” argument. Outside of Hill and Kelce, there is no tried and true threat on this offense. They need a good change of pace back. I like Darrel, but not sure he’s got much room to improve. CEH is not an every down guy. Need a thumper. Don’t even get me started on the TE room after Kelce…
Ive never understood why we just ignore TE beyond kelce. Reid was loving the double and even triple te sets for awhile. Could have used an extra blocker yesterday
Because that was when he had Alex Smith.
Whats your point? Worked for Alex it will work for Mahomes
You’ve been talking down our team for a little while now. Now you come in and pour salt on our wounds? What do they say about friends like these?
Amen
seriously?
Did you watch the game?
For me it isn’t THAT we lost, it was HOW we lost. Bad game plan to begin with and poor in-game adjustments, imo. This one is gonna sting for awhile.
You didn’t like the game plan of not even considering the possibility that they might see zone coverages?
Call me crazy.
Alejandro Villanueva LT thirty-three free agent who made six million last year.
Worth a look.
In theory, add him and draft a center and we have a stable line.
Creed Humphrey out of OU is probably the best in the class. Lefty might deter some people from drafting him as a C.
On the bright side, Mahomes showed the heart and soul of a champion and was willing to take every shot out there to keep battling.
Throws like those are the only reason I watched the game to then end. Spectacular plays.
Mahomes throw when he was parallel to the ground to the end zone on fourth down was Matrix like. Damn shame it was not caught.
That’s some straight up witchcraft shit. He is magicking throws into WRs hands (or faces) and they are failing the team.
Even madden players are saying that’s cheese. lol
That throw completely encapsulates the whole game for me.
Britt get canned yet?
Throw him a can of beer?
I will try and defend the offensive line. We knew going into the game that they were the weak link on offense. We knew that they have been the weak link for most of the season. No matter what system you use, the best grade any of them might get would be a C for the totality of their season play. They were backups for a reason. I do not care how great they do in an individual game – no one should expect them to play like Grunhard, Shields or Roaf. We did little to help them and, according to Andy and I believe him, the busted their ass out there to try and make it happen. Reluctantly, I give them a pass.
They are professionals, so they do have a job to do that they didn’t get done. That being said, they are backups for a reason and shouldn’t be expected to wall off that front 4 without substantial help. Reid/EB left those poor bastards out to dry and they did just what we should have expected them to do. I won’t give them a pass, but I sure as hell won’t place the blame on them.
We are saying about the same thing here.
Yeah, they don’t deserve a pass at all. I get the criticism of Andy and EB cause those two let their hubris get the better of them. Andy had his head inserted because of his kid’s dipshit behavior. OL still wears the toilet seat on this one. They are NFL players and should perform better.
It would be like blaming the Christians for not doing better against the Lions.
Except it was humans on humans. Nice try.
I was going to use Jews and Nazis but thought that would be in bad taste.
Ever seen Defiance? They put up a better fight, living in the forest in winter, than the Chiefs OL
IDK, basketball is a pretty easy comparison.
If you have 3 7-footers and they all get hurt and you have to face Wilt Chamberlain in the finals and you tallest dude left is 6’5″, you can’t just leave him on the post 1-on-1.
Or if all your best free throw shooters are hurt and you get into a free throw shooting contest at the end of a game and your best dude left is a 70% guy and he needs to make 90% moving forward to win the game.
Seems a bit unreasonable to ask someone to do something they can’t do consistently. Better to compare it to what TB did in the first game with Carlton Davis. “Hey just match up on Tyreek 1-on-1 with no help”. That dude needs help because he can’t do what you are asking. Set up for failure.
IDK, the Lions were only 5-11 this year and have Goff next year. Any group of Christians you cobble together might stand a chance. lol
Good point
This. So much this. Also – I think EB didn’t help his HC aspirations any yesterday. He and Andy got absolutely schooled by Bowles and they clearly had no freaking idea how to respond.
My take – in the first half, we played conservatively (probably because of the line) and looked like we thought we were going to do what we do with ease. Bucs put up a fight and pulled ahead due to poor officiating. As we started to open it up in the third quarter, the defense had lost their swag so we basically said to Mahomes, please save us and the pounding commenced.
EB (and Reid) surely got pants’d on the biggest stage last night. I don’t want to speculate too much on a single game, but I’ve been suspecting that EB isn’t interviewing well or it’s being held against him that he came up through the RB room and has a lot of help with a passing coordinator (Kafka) and Reid.
The implication that EB wasn’t getting HC jobs because of racism was always laughable to me.
I think Doug Pedersen and Matt Nagy are the biggest reasons EB isn’t a HC right now.
Agreed, no pass given, but the blame lands squarely on big Red…. it’s like they had two hours to come up with a game plan.. unbelievable…
I put most of it on the coaches. The game plan did nothing to help those goes out.
What happened yesterday was complete BS. How our guys weren’t ready to play is coaching, plain and simple. I made a comment a few days ago laughing at the idea of Arians out coaching Andy. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Andy got smoked. I’m so disgusted with the effort yesterday that the only one untouchable right now is Patrick. Everyone else is up for evaluation. What an absolute disgrace we were forced to endure.
I agree that Patrick was miles ahead of the pack but evaluating everyone – you would consider getting rid of Kelce cause he had some struggles?
No, just blowing off steam. We’ve had such a great run, a chance to take a step into the history books, and I don’t even know what team that was yesterday. It was pathetic, embarrassing and me effing pissed.
I feel ya
Me too.
By the time we trim the roster for salary cap purposes, we probably could afford one reasonably big signing or a handful of medium scale signings. Biggest splash could be signing someone like JJ Watt to add to our pass rush.
If JJ wants to play for cheap I would love to have him. But my gut tells me he will sign with Green Bay.
JJ wants a ring, Loosing yesterday may of hurt or chances of picking up quality vets for cheap..
We were a 14-2 team that went to back to back Super Bowls with the best quarterback in the NFL. All teams have holes.
I wonder how strong of an interest he has in playing with his lil bro in Pitt?
That could be his first choice.
If he wants a ring, I don’t think he would want Big Ben as his qb.
I would agree with that lol.
I’m not sure if Ben is going to play next year, he looked pretty washed up. They need to rebuild the entire offense, apart from WR. Either way, he only goes to Pitt if he wants to play with his brother, no other reason.
Piece of shit refs, man…
No shit, dicklock.
I noticed that live and was pretty bewildered they threw the flag.
Feet entanglement -> Breeland falls -> clips Evans -> Evans takes a dive on an uncatchable floater -> ref throws flag -> I die a little inside
Our secondary was okay yesterday – they were simply victimized by some horrendous calls. Exception – anyone responsible for covering Gronk. Our play against the run was decent save one drive when it appeared that everyone simply gave up. Pass rush sucked. We definitely need to retain Taco and add a pass rusher in the draft. Did Wharton play much cause he had a decent impact as the season went on? Danna?
Wharton was in, did nothing. Danna played, did nothing.
Dare I ask if Clark played?
He got that sack. And I think he caused the pressure on the interception that didn’t stand.
He also got a nice tackle for loss on a RB.
Like I said, the first two plays.
Heh. After the first two plays, it didn’t appear so.
I actually think Clark was our best defensive lineman yesterday but that says a lot lmao. He and Chris were awful. Ryan Jensen owns Chris
I wouldn’t expect an undrafted guy or a 5th rounder to do much against that wall. They’re just roll players, I don’t expect much from them.
Danna had some chances. He refused to wrong arm a kickout block form Gronk at one point and allowed a HUGE seam for Fournette.
Hope we see improvement from him, he doesn’t really have the burst to be much more than a JAG, but you need those types of guys in your rotation.
KC has too many right now. Yes, you need some, but they don’t have nearly the athletes TB did…
Depends what position group you are talking about I guess. DL has studs that didn’t play like studs and the JAGs were just JAGs. If Jones/Clark blow up the OL the JAGs will be allowed to be just that and have solid games. When they are relied upon to be better than they are, you’re screwed.
I’m saying when they have a chance to make a play, they need to make it. Period. Danna missed twice yesterday. Pennel regressed exponentially from last season. KPass is just a tall, muscular guy. Wharton is a dude who flashed…in the regular season.
I’d agree with all that.
Danna needs to get better (I think he can)
Pennel has been a disappointment
KPass is nothing more than the first guy off the bus
Wharton is a situational pass rusher that can give you solid snaps in the regular season.
Saw the feet tangle live, and Breeland does aim for the legs as he is falling. But uncatchable is uncatchable. Should have been a no call.
Last year after we won the Superbowl, I had a hard time getting heavily invested in draft research and free agency moves.
After getting our throats punched last night, I already feel passionate about the team building aspect again.
I think we need to try to find a new #2 receiver to replace Sammy. I would target a player that is high risk/high reward on an incentive based one year deal. I am thinking AJ Green.
I would grab a vet backup TE that might be a little long in the tooth but could be a more reliable option on the field. Ideal target is Jared Cook.
I have talked about the line below and I would keep our RB room as CEH, Darrell Williams, and Thompson. See how Damian looks in his return from Covid opt out, but don’t spend any real resources on the position.
I am still pondering the defensive options.
I agree, though I did do a few mocks. I found I was over-emphasizing what I wanted or thought to be the biggest problems. Veach had a different and probably better plan. I’m going to try to read Veach’s mind a little better this year.
Spent lots of time last night thinking about the same subject and the people that would need to be cut to find room in the salary cap. While I love the idea of adding some weapons, the area that needs to be addressed first and foremost is the offensive line. Our money might have to go there.
Both trenches need BIG work. Need a super talented LB badly as well.
Put in a call for Grunhard, Shields, and Roaf.
Might need to put in a call for a new OL coach.
No, don’t do that. Andy Heck is a really good OL coach. Just needs actual talent to work with. That would be really short-sighted. I mainly blame protection on Andy. He does nothing to help his guys besides asking WRs to chip and even then it doesn’t work. Also I would blame Veach
All I know is your unit can’t be responsible for getting the franchise QB killed, for the better part of two seasons, and not have some heat applied.
He deserves heat, but also, he was dealing with four backups. Vs four awesome pass rushers. I think it’s more of an Andy playcalling issue and a lack of investment from this organization. That needs to be the fix more than anything
I will never disagree that Andy/EB screwed the bejeebus out of the offense with their hubris. I’m saying this is year two of $500M running for his life.
Andy, has mostly called great games this year and had solid game plans. When he didn’t, they usually were able to adjust. Why not in this game? The game plan was the polar opposite of what it should have been and whatever adjustments were made were too little too late. Where was the focus and emotion from the team? To me that’s a coaching issue also. I love Andy, and the coaching staff, but they screwed this one.
Totally agree. Heck is awesome. I’m not even mad at the poor play of the OL. They’re just not that good, but no backups are. Or they wouldn’t be backups. Really speaks to Heck’s coaching to be able to get this far on 4 backups. A lot of teams don’t even carry 4 backup OL. lol
I can promise you A.J. Green is washed. He only had 523 yards on 105 targets last year. Only 44 catches. The dude isn’t healthy and doesn’t run well anymore. If your goal is to bring Green in, just keep Watkins honestly
Poor guy. Amazing his counterpart Julio is still dominant (when he plays) even after all his injuries.
That is why he should come cheap. Hoping for a change of scenery resurgence like Randy Moss from the Raiders to the Patriots.
He’s washed. Moss was still super good. Green isn’t anywhere as good as he was. Rather get Marvin Jones if we’re looking for older receivers
Is Albert Wilson available?
Bet he’d look good in a Chiefs uniform. Wait…
He opted out this season so he’s under contract and Miami needs speed so I bet they keep him
Or let some of our younger practice squad guys move up.
I would like Marvin Jones, but I think the money is the issue. I would bring in Green even if we got another receiver like Jones.
I am only bringing Green in on a contract that causes almost zero cap problems. We could cut him without hesitation.
My problem with Green is then if we become complacent and don’t draft a #2 WR.
I see what you are saying.
When I am going for free agents I look for short term fixes with cheap prices. Long term fixes for big contracts.
Then in the draft, I draft to cover my short term fixes with long term possibilities.
Getting Green would not stop me from drafting a receiver, but it would cover my ass to where I don’t have to reach for one.
A Perfect Storm of disaster hit yesterday – could write pages and pages about how every weakness we had was exposed and how the referees helped our demise.
Also, how is Britt Reid still on the staff??? Clark needs to take the decision out of Andy’s hands and fire him.
Should be fired post haste.
So I don’t know if I’m gonna post much about the game for a while, I wrote a post about the Chiefs and moving forward that’ll be out eventually, but I don’t know if I’m gonna analyze the game in a post. If I don’t, here’s some thoughts I had. Let’s start with offense Offense Andy Reid was atrocious. This game is on him. The gameplan was awful. The Bucs sat in two-high safeties over 80% of the time, and the Chiefs had no answers to beat it. The Chiefs sat in 5-man protections 92% of the time, even with 4 backup lineman in their first game playing together. Everything was either a poorly designed screen to beat super athletic linebackers for some reason, or on 3rd down, there was nothing. It was essentially Mahomes just running around and trying to bail us out. Terrible, F gameplan. This deserves to go on his legacy Mahomes was fine. He did absolutely everything he could’ve done given the circumstances. I do think he was pressing at times, but that’s not his fault Clyde and Kelce were the only two guys last night Mecole Hardman was awful. Didn’t turn his head twice to the ball, went offsides. I really don’t get what to do with him man. Sammy Watkins is vital, but needs to go. The Chiefs desperately needed help in the short and intermediate game outside of Kelce, and that’s supposed to be Sammy. He was slow and atrocious. I don’t want him back at all. I would expect the team to try and open cap space for someone (Give me Juju) I don’t wanna kill the OL. It was all backups. The gameplan to help this OL from Reid was worse than themselves. It’ll be better next year by simply adding Niang, LDT, and hopefully Osemele back. And some rookies Defense Spags deserves to be majorly criticized. The gameplan was horrific. The Chiefs clearly came out early with all their DBs, wanting to blitz and bring speed, so what did the Bucs do? Motion their tight ends, bring in heavy personnel… Read more »
There are just too many ifs on that OL of 2021 for me to think, “yep, that’s the fix.” We are essentially counting on three guys to return from serious injury…and be capable. Then we count on a guy, whom we all wanted cut the year BEFORE he took a season off, to just come back to football and be a good RG. Am I missing something here? Achilles injuries for a big man are serious business, back injuries are worse. I hear that tendons heal faster than ligaments, but one of our dudes tore them in BOTH knees…that can’t just wash off with soap and water.
It’s fair. I would expect LDT to still be better than Wylie ever was. The Chiefs will have the info on KO’s knees, but if he’s good to go then guard is fine. I’ve been back on forth with Niang but I trust a healthy Niang, who was easily a top 50 prospect, to play fine. Better than what we had at the end of the year
I’m not expecting an elite OL but at least it’ll be better with some rookies
I have a feeling that LDT may come back better than he was. Maybe just wishful thinking.
He’s been working full time “on the front lines.” Not sure where the time for training to be in peak football shape comes in.
I always enjoy and appreciate your work brother.
With regards to analyzing the game, I don’t see much point. It was what it was and we all know it unfortunately.
Thanks man. Appreciate ya
It’s fair. Everything was horrendous, so it’s tough to really point to why. Just looked lost
I’d chalk that up to Reid/EB being out-coached by Bowles. They went out expecting man and got a lot of high 2 and never cooked anything up for it. When you prepare 2 weeks for the Saints but the Ravens show up on gameday, you’re going to get smacked. That’s pretty much what happened IMO. Stupid part is they looked like they had no plan B.
Oh yeah, Bowles absolutely did everything the opposite he did in week 12. He deserves every single bit of credit he gets. He confused Andy. The Chiefs just didn’t prepare for anything else, nor did they have adjustments ready
So strange given 2 weeks to prepare. I know the book is out on what Bowles does, but you’ve got to have a plan B for the SB…
That’s what I don’t understand.. game plan A , obviously wasn’t working. And I never noticed a switch to plan B.. my god what a shit show we put forth for the world to see. An absolute embarrassment….
What I want to know, and will never know, is WHY didn’t we expect it? I don’t think you need to be an NFL HOF coach to realize that the opposing team may have a different plan than the one you exploited last time. What happened in the last two weeks that led to this team looking so unprepared and undisciplined in this game?
Mecole is a waste. Id rather just play Pringle. Watkins being a no show really hurt yesterday.
Gonna have to replace Robinson and Watkins next year. Would really like to dump Hardman too. He has zero awareness.
I see it pretty much the exact same way.
