The Chiefs Select Wisconsin Linebacker Leo Chenal in the 3rd Round
56 replies48 hours ago the Chiefs had two 3rd round picks, their original one plus one from the Bears hiring Ryan Poles. They traded the better one to the Patriots to move up in the 1st round, but kept the 2nd one and used it on an inside linebacker Leo Chenal.
Do You Agree With This Pick?
great pick. our lb core 2 years ago was a joke, now its a strength. veach rebuilt the OL and lb core in 2 years to an extreme degree. wow
Welp, yesterday I logged off mad that we’d drafted an undersized CB, and then I woke up seeing things in a whole new light.
I can’t see how that can possibly repeat itself with this redundant LB we just drafted. But I’ll give it a try. See y’all tomorrow.
View him as a Ben Niemann replacement. Niemann saw 25+ snaps in 13 games last year, including 40+ in 4 games that he didn’t even start.
Niemann was supposed to be our nickel LB. Chenal’s weakest area is supposed to be coverage.
Ha! You might’ve picked the one and only way that Niemann might actually be better than Chenal.
Nice try, though. Honestly, I try to like all our picks, but it just isn’t happening with this one right now. Maybe he’ll morph into TJ Watt by September.
No more of this “Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane” bullshit.
Can’t wait until Clark is gone.
Do you think they skipped a second DE this draft just because they still have Clark?
I could see that actually being true. If so, that would be enraging.
Now you have enraged me. LOL
My work here is done.
Best part about this group, especially these DB’s is that no business decisions are going be made.
Quick nitpick, Tony. Chenal’s last name is not spelled like the French clothing line.
I blame whoever tweeted out the pick that I copied off of.
Fixed.
LOL. No worries. Spelling is just one thing that jumps off the screen at me. Sorry.
Guess conversion is out of the question.
sigh
Hey, stuckinpackland, looks like Nick “doesn’t like anything,” either. wtf.
Pfff settle down
LOL…oh. Maybe he’ll be alright. Maybe.
So what? So maybe we improve from excellent to slightly excellent-er, at the least important position on defense. While we have Frank Clark’s corpse starting at DE. yay.
I agree. Glad he has good numbers. They just drafted the equivalent of another QB.
I’m hoping they try to convert Chenal. Hate trying to convert 3rd rounders, but that’s the only way I can make myself stomach the pick.
Yep. As just a SAM LB who doesn’t rush, he won’t get on the field enough to make any impact.
“Oversized, throwback type who tested through the roof but doesn’t play to that level of athleticism on the field. Awesome as a blitzer and quality run defender. Little-to-no experience or refined skill in coverage, which is a concern, and Chiefs already have young LBs on the roster. (Chris Trapasso)”
Grade C+
At least we got the school right. LOL
Well missed or arm tackles shouldn’t be an issue with this crop. Tough physical players drafted with every pick, including Moore.
BOOM!!! an excellent pick
Well, at least he won’t be pushing Bolton out of the middle. That’s some good news.
But if we wanted a SAM who could rush, then we should’ve drafted Bonitto. Or anybody who has actually done that before, instead of a total conversion job.
Why has Perrion Winfrey dropped so much and can we get him in the 4th round ?
I’ve read it was the scheme Oklahoma played. The way they rushed their Dline doesn’t happen nearly as often in the NFL, made their Dlinemen tough to evaluate.
They had them all out of position damn near all season long. Winfrey was at NT a LOT and Isaiah Thomas was at 3 Tech. They belonged at 3 Tech and DE.

Draft Scouting Report:
Rating: 82.87 (Long-term starter)
Pro Comparison: Vince Williams
Strengths:
Built like old-school middle linebacker. Shoots gaps, fights through blocks and can be very disruptive in the backfield. Never accused of running around blocks — he consistently takes the shortest distance to the ball. In fact, he’s among the best in this class at flowing to the ball on zone reads, beating offensive linemen to the spot, and then knifing into the backfield to disrupt the play. Like having a defensive lineman at the second level in terms of toughness.
Weaknesses:
While he shows an ability to drop into zones, his coverage responsibilities are the weakest part of this game. As such, his change of direction in the open field is just average, and the primary question NFL teams will have to answer is if he is a three-down player at the next level.
Accolades:
ranked 68th on CBS Sports Big Board. KC got him at 104
4.52 forty 40.5 inch vert at 250 lbs.
He’ll be a helluva special teamer. And that’s probably all.
or maybe TJ Watt
Was TJ Watt an off-ball LB throughout college before he became an edge rusher in the NFL? Honestly asking, I don’t know that.
I have been thinking about Clay Matthews, who was mostly an off-ball LB in college. But I don’t think he is very similar to Chenal, because Matthews did do some edge rushing in college as well, and he could bend the edge.
Hopefully this kid can be converted to something useful. But I’m just can’t see it right now.
I don’t recall him playing anything but EDGE
Tedy Bruschi, as another conversion example? Except he converted the opposite way, from DE to off-ball.
I dunno, wracking my brain but just can’t see how it’s gonna work. Maybe something will come to my by morning.
Jesus berserker u don’t like anything. This dude is an absolute stud.
“Just one more…and it would’ve been a near perfect draft.”
“NEAR PERFECT.”
“u don’t like anything.” wtf.
“He can stuff the run. yay”
“Maybe this pick is just to keep the fans who are age 65+ happy” “Might be the best MLB in the draft, he won’t ever get on the field except if Bolton is injured. “What a complete waste of a pick”
Yeah, I don’t like this one pick. “u don’t like anything.” And, wtf.
Just one more decent DE or CB. Just one more guy who can actually defend the passing plays that are 80% of the NFL’s offense, and it would’ve been a damned near perfect draft.
Dude lives in the backfield on his highlights…
He can stuff the run. yay.
