Chase will have his fifth-year option picked up by the club this offseason, and will surely get his long-term deal next offseason. Given his production, Chase will receive a contract that will most likely make him one of the league’s highest-paid wideouts. The Bengals already employ the NFL’s highest-paid player in quarterback Joe Burrow, who got his deal done before the start of this past season.
Given the receiver market, $20 million is likely the floor for Higgins to make on an annual basis. Assuming Chase receives a deal that pays him at least $25 million a season, that would mean that the Bengals are spending at least $45 million annually on two receivers should they also choose to re-sign Higgins. That would represent roughly 19 percent of the team’s salary cap assuming the cap is at least $240 million in 2025 (it should be higher).

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2024-nfl-free-agency-bengals-tee-higgins-likely-to-get-franchise-tag-barring-long-term-deal-per-report/

that is a butt load of money for three players

60 million in 2024 for Burrow, Chase, and Higgins
90 million in 2025

Cincinnati, after all, is the reason why the Chiefs have been to the Super Bowl four out of the last five years and not each of the last five. A big reason for the Bengals’ success over the last several years has been the play of Burrow and his top-two receivers. Super Bowl LVI was no exception. Chase had five grabs for 89 yards that included the game’s longest play: a 46-yard grab that set up the Bengals’ first touchdown. Higgins led both teams with 100 receiving yards and a pair of touchdown passes from Burrow.

yeah, I remember so many playoff disappointments over the years (not to mention all the years when playoffs weren’t even in our vocabulary)

was at a Chiefs bar in Denver for the game @Indy ….the “insurmountable 38-10 (?) halftime lead, AS11 looking like GOAT of the day … only to lose with that 2nd Half meltdown

snowing outside by then, and on the out there was a very young Chiefs fan, maybe 25 yo at most, literally sobbing like a baby

and I was thinking “get used to it, kid”

except that for all the heartache, it’s still one of the best games I’ve ever seen (the rookie Mahomes 54-51 whatever vs Rams, Monday Night Football Montana beating Elway, X-Mas day vs Miami)

With little risk, consider the diplomatic, economic, and legal gains from transferring frozen Russian reserves to an escrow for Ukraine and possibly other claimants. Russia is waging a war of attrition against Ukraine. Ukraine’s friends need to send a signal that Moscow cannot outlast Kyiv; it is elegant justice to do so with Russia’s own assets. Ukraine would also benefit psychologically from a large, enduring show of financial support during its winter of discontent. If one approves of sending weapons to fight Russian soldiers, it seems odd to shrink from transferring Russia’s assets to Ukrainian victims. It is not likely that governments and their publics will send the billions they have frozen back to Russia. And we should consider how the reserves can be used constructively.

eas looking at the Chiefs salary cap situation

and I don’t see much wiggle room

only MVS would save us any cap 10 million and he would still cost 2 million in dead money

none of the others that we could maybe do something with have no cap savings

I am surprised how Joe Thuney is the 2nd largest cap hit in 2024 AND 2025

Tyrone
Reply to  Steve_Chiefs

MVS would save 12.

Could move more of Mahomes money around.

Chris Jones is already taking up 3.4 without even being signed.

If they want to extend Justin Reid. Could do it and save money in 2024.

Could extend Kelce or add void years to push money back.

And if signing Sneed/Jones long term they could back end the deals.

Plenty of cap space.

Kansas City Chiefs
WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling ($12 million)
Signed as part of the Chiefs’ Money Ball approach to replacing Tyreek Hill two years ago, MVS took a step back in 2023 after an already quiet 2022 debut in Kansas City. He ended the regular season with 21 catches for 315 yards and a lone touchdown. MVS caught more than two passes in just one game. He ranked 89th in yards per route run. Valdes-Scantling’s deep speed helps clear space for Patrick Mahomes’ to pepper Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice with targets, but that type of player can be had for a fraction of the price the Chiefs are set to pay MVS.
