Friday Night Movies O/T: The Bizarre Experience of Watching Culturally Dominant Movies Like Psycho Or The Matrix For The First Time

Note: This review does have spoilers.

For a long time there was a long list of movies that everybody’s seen that I’ve never seen. That’s still the case, but the past couple of years I’ve been making more of an effort to actually watch those movies.

The past couple of months I checked off a couple of movies from that list, including Psycho and The Matrix, and I started to notice something interesting. Movies like these have such a huge cultural impact that it was impossible for me not to go into them with a certain idea of what they’re about, and it’s interesting how the actual movie is different than the movie I had pictured in my mind.

For Psycho, the movie was very different than what I had pictured. The shower scene is so famous, but I had imagined the Bates Motel to be more of a large hotel in a city and the movie to involve many customers of the hotel to be murdered, including the infamous shower scene.

But, as anybody who’s seen it knows, that’s not at all what it’s like. In fact, the first half hour or so is not even remotely related to psychos murdering people in hotels. It’s a story of a woman who stole a whole bunch of money from her employer so that she could be with her lover, but she got murdered before she could get to him. A sort of reverse murder mystery, as we know the circumstances of her murder (with the only mystery being around Norman Bates’ mother) but the other characters don’t, incorrectly believing she was murdered for the money.

What was really great about Psycho, and what was completely different than what I expected from all the cultural references, was how it went for a sense of realism. The actors are so good that the scenes often feel like real life, especially the opening scenes. The characters also made incorrect assumptions about what happened, but their errors were understandable given the information they had. So often I thought to myself that I couldn’t believe this was Psycho.

The one shame was that because the shower scene had been played out so often it didn’t have the same intensity as I’m sure it does for people who watched it without the spoiler. But even then I really liked it, I’ll give it a 9/10.

On the flip side The Matrix has had more than just one scene spoiled. Essentially the whole movie has been spoiled with constant references in the cultural zeitgeist. As a nerd it should be a movie I’m really into, but because all the interesting philosophical bits and surprises have long been spoiled it just didn’t hit the same. And without those it’s really not that great of a movie.

One flaw was the fighting being way too slow for what they were wanting to do. The whole idea is the Neo is supposed to be this special person who can be the Mahomes of Matrix fighting, but the fighting is so slow that it’s hard to believe he’s special for mastering it. I don’t need a blur of action that’s impossible to follow like in a lot of modern movies, but something like the light saber duels in the Star Wars prequels would fit much better.

But there are also many parts of the plot that are not well established. For example, the love triangle that is supposed to drive the plot. The traitor bailed on them because the girl didn’t like him, and a big reveal is that she knows Neo is the one because the oracle told her she’d fall in love with the one. But they never did the work to establish these relationships, instead the traitor is having dinner with an agent out of nowhere.

Another example of this is Neo interacting with the kid who can bend a spoon. This whole idea went absolutely nowhere. Or the agent who confessed to not liking the Matrix. That also went nowhere.

To me The Matrix is a 5/10. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more without the endless spoilers in the air, but it should still be expected to have a better story. Without the shocking world building it was a movie that I had to fight not to turn off halfway through.

You have to be like 90 to appreciate psycho. That movie came out in 1960…that’s before the Beatles and Before Kenedy was assassinated. It was truly a different world. Back then a movie as shocking as psycho had never been done before. We are so amazingly jaded today that we can’t comprehend a time when psycho was truly terrifying. Something similar happened with the first Alien in 1979. I remember when that movie scared the chit outa me. Now I could watch it while doing my taxes.
The Matrix as an awesome sci-fi movie and had concepts not really considered before in any mass audience. Also the stop motion camera work was cutting edge at the time. For full impact…you really have to see these kinda movies when they come out. When they are culturally altering. Not 25 years later…hell…we just marveled as we gave birth to AI last year haha.

Like Toney said about Seven, an ok movie, didn’t get the fuss.
At the time it was fresh but does not hold up, al the devices have been recycled.
On the other hand I watched 12 Monkeys (uncut) all the way thru abt 3 months ago and was fully engaged, also happens to be one of my favorites.
Casablanca still holds up for me too, a new or forgatten detail every time

Seven was an amazing movie. Saw it when it came out. It has to be talked about in the same breath as The Usual Suspects. Saw that when it came out too. The only two movies, at the time, or before hand that the bad guys win.

Yah 12 Monkeys is good. I liked it better 20 years later when I watched it again…didn’t love it the first time around.

Ove course Casablanca holds up…In my opinion, greatest movie of all time. I have it in 4K

You want a movie that will really blow your socks off in 4K….get “singing in the rain” in 4K…spectacular. You really need Movie theater like quality to make old musicals like that pop. And I never watch old musicals.

I have not seen wolfen in a long long time. I remember something about it meaning intelligent hunter. About 6 months ago I was on a kick…rewatched American Werewolf in London. The Howling. I got stuck in The Howling II because it sucks. I also re-watched salems lot and silver bullet.

Lawerence of Arabia another greatest movie of all time…I’m not watching it again till I get it in 4K. There is nothing in the desert and no man needs nothing.

yeah, he called for “investigation”. don’t know if provable he was there prior to incident Wiki (FWIW): Investigations Attorney General Barr ordered an investigation by the Department of Justice Inspector General in addition to the investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, saying that he was “appalled” by Epstein’s death in federal custody.[12][326] Two days later Barr said there had been “serious irregularities” in the prison’s handling of Epstein, promising: “We will get to the bottom of what happened, and there will be accountability.”[327] On August 14, 2019, Manhattan federal court Judge Richard M. Berman, who was overseeing Epstein’s criminal case, wrote to the Metropolitan Correctional Center warden Lamine N’Diaye inquiring as to whether an investigation into the millionaire’s apparent suicide would include a probe into his prior (July 23) injuries. Judge Berman wrote that to his knowledge it has never been definitely explained what they concluded about the incident.[328] The national president of the Council of Prison Locals C-33, E. O. Young, stated that prisons “can’t ever stop anyone who is persistent on killing themselves”.[329] Between 2010 and 2016, around 124 inmates killed themselves while in federal custody, or around twenty prisoners per year, out of an inmate population of 180,000.[330][331] The previous reported inmate suicide in the MCC facility in Manhattan was in 1998.[332] The union leader Young said it was unclear if there was video of Epstein’s hanging or direct observations by jail officials. He said that while cameras are ubiquitous in the facility, he did not believe that the interior of inmates’ cells were within their range. Young said union officials had long been raising concerns regarding staffing, as the Trump administration had imposed a hiring freeze and budget cuts on the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), adding: “All this was caused by the administration.”[329] President Serene Gregg, of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 3148, said MCC is functioning with fewer than seventy percent of the needed correctional officers, forcing many to work mandatory overtime and 60-to-70-hour workweeks.[329][333] In previous congressional testimony, Attorney General Barr admitted the BOP was “short” about 4,000 to 5,000… Read more »

I think Psycho was a tad overrated. Dial M for Murder was probably my favorite Hitchcock film. The way it was shot, the plot, the tension was unbelievable. Plus, unlike most AH films, it was fast paced. Total classic

If you want a modern film I saw recently that blew me away, check out Searching from 2018. I hate found footage/gimmick films, but this was an AWESOME film. Tight thriller that had me hooked from start to finish. Great flick

from wikipedia

The New England Patriots hold the record for the longest postseason winning streak in NFL history, with 10 straight playoff wins between 2001 and 2005—although the team did miss the playoffs in 2002

Chiefs are currently at 7 straight

Andy Reid discussed the Chiefs final play and Hardman was the second or third read. They used corn dog to try and draw the defense that way but Bosa crashed on McKinnon and they were manned up on the outside so it left Hardman wide open. This might be a little too hot but I don’t think the comparison should be between Mahomes and Brady. It should be Mahomes and Marino. With all due respect to Tom, comparing his career with Mahomes outside of the rings just isn’t right. Mahomes and Marino had similar starts to their careers with the big difference being Mahomes actually has rings to show for it.

I think it was Team Player who listed about 5 or 6 GOAT types: Marino for accuracy, Manning for brains, etc and said that Mahomes may not necessarily be #1 in any off those categories, he’s #2 in ALL of them

Named the fifth-smarted athlete in 2010 by Sporting News, Fitzpatrick has been called out on several lists of athletes with the highest intellects both before and since. Demonstrating his impressive brain-power even before getting accepted into Harvard, he scored an impressive 1,580 on the SAT out of a possible 1,600. Nicknamed the “Amish Rifle”, “Fitzmagic” or “Fitztragic”, the brainy athlete also finished the Wonderlic Test (an entrance exam, used by the NFL since 1970 to predict player performance) in a record nine minutes earning a score of 48 out of a possible 50. Fitzpatrick holds the highest Wonderlic Test score ever earned among NFL quarterbacks to date; the only player recorded to have surpassed Fitzpatrick’s score was Pat McInally, former wide receiver and punter for the Cincinnati Bengals. https://www.collegeconsensus.com/features/smartest-nfl-players/ A major college recruitment prospect, Gabbert attended University of Missouri67 from 2008 through 2010. Though he left the University of Missouri67 early during his junior year after he was drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first NFL draft round (10th overall pick) in 2004, his smarts are clearly recognized. Former Coach Bruce Arians, who’s protégés include both Payton Manning and Andrew Luck, said of Gabbert, “Yeah, he’s up there… to play at this level in seven offenses is not easy, and he’s had success, especially in this offense. But yeah, he’s up there with those guys mentally.” Center player, A.Q. Shipley, remarked on Gabbert, “He’s super smart and you can tell… He’s on top of his game, always. Plays with a ton of confidence.” Gabbert scored a notably high 42 out of 50 on the Wonderlic Test, which is used by the NFL when considering applicants during the draft. In the 2005 NFL draft Smith was selected by the San Francisco 49ers head coach, Mike Nolan as the number one overall pick. Nolan’s primary reason for choosing Smith was his assessment that the rookie was “cerebral, introspective, and non-confrontational.” Smith’s current head coach, Jay Gruden of the Washington Redskins commented on Smith, “One thing about Alex, he is the smartest guy I have ever been around, without a doubt, and he is in great… Read more »

well, it DOES take brains to understand all the concepts and variations and terminology for however many plays, facing however many formations AND be athletic enough AND be able to make a snap judgement otherwise if correctly IF your original play is wrong (ie, a blitz or O-Line breakdown)
