Chiefs news for April 23, 2023

Good morning, AG!

Today in Chiefs’ history, Goose egg. However, we now know who the Chiefs will play in 119 days (and it’s a shocker), when they open their defense of the Super Bowl title at Arrowhead .

Elsewhere, in 1972, the Rolling Stones released Exile on Main Street. (FWIW: The release of this classic album is closer in time to the Crash of 1929 than it is to today. Bought it the day it came out? You’re old)

1949: The Soviet Union lifted its blockade of Berlin

1926: Aboard the semirigid airship Norge, Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, American scientist Lincoln Ellsworth, and Italian engineer Umberto Nobile made the first undisputed flight over the North Pole on this day in 1926.

1925: Yogi Berra was born in St. Louis, Missouri, a place so crowded no one goes there anymore

1846: The Donner party left Independence, Missouri, for California. It did not end well.

Let’s talk about that schedule, shall we? Give yourself some time this morning. It’s a big huddle.

2023 Regular Season Schedule Finalized; Chiefs Slated in Six Primetime Contests | Chiefs.com

https://www.chiefs.com/news/2023-regular-season-schedule-finalized-chiefs-slated-in-six-primetime-contests

The National Football League announced the regular season schedule for the 2023 season on Thursday. The Chiefs are currently slated to play in six primetime contests, including three nationally televised games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The reigning Super Bowl Champion Chiefs will kick off the 2023 season and hang their Super Bowl LVII banner on the NFL’s opening night against the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7.

7 takeaways from Chiefs’ 2023 schedule | Chiefswire

As the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs’ schedule is loaded with prime-time games, some two-game road stretches and plenty of playoff teams, but the structure of the schedule seems favorable compared to last season.

On Sept. 7, the Chiefs will play in the NFL kickoff game against the Detroit Lions at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Royals share a complex with the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champs, and thus the Royals game has been moved to Monday, Sept. 4.

When the Detroit Lions were announced as the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 1 opponent for their Super Bowl LVII banner night, it was met with some head-scratching from fans around the league.

The 2023 NFL regular season schedule is set! The season starts at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, with the Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Detroit Lions. Aaron Rodgers will make his Jets home debut in Week 1 on Monday night against the Bills. We’ll get a Super Bowl LVII rematch in Week 12, when Philadelphia visits Kansas City, and the top two (well, really, three) picks in this year’s draft will square off when the Texans and C.J. Stroud (and Will Anderson Jr.) visit Bryce Young and the Panthers in Week 8. I also can’t wait to see how Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill fares against his former Chiefs teammates (in Germany, no less), as well as the sure-to-be-emotional Bills-at-Bengals game later that same day. There are so many awesome storylines and so much to look forward to!

Chiefs rookie DE BJ Thompson enthusiastic about potential special teams role | Chiefswire

Rookies don’t always get a chance to compete for playing time in the NFL, let alone for a team like the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Nonetheless, fifth-round selection B.J. Thompson is looking to make his mark for the team in any way he can in 2023, including on special teams if necessary.

The new crop of Kansas City Chiefs UDFAs got their debut this week at rookie minicamp, and some weren’t up to snuff as roster cuts have already been made. Having said that, others “impressed,” including slot cornerback Reese Taylor out of Purdue.

Report: Court Docs Show Jalen Carter Had Suspended License on Night of Fatal Crash | Bleacher Report

Court records show that Jalen Carter—a first-round pick by the Eagles this year—was driving with a suspended license on the night a fatal crash in Athens, Georgia, killed teammate Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy, according to ESPN’s Tim McManus.

Carter was charged with reckless driving and racing. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 12 months of probation, a $1,000 fine and 80 hours of community service. However, he was not charged with driving on a suspended license.

two differing opinions vis-a-vis SOS … one based on last year’s records and another based on differnt criteria

so apparently NOBODY can post ANYTHING that’s “different” from whatever YOU find? no honest discussion is allowed? just automatically a “dickhead” because I posted it???

what the fuck ever, dude … FOAD

So if we make a contrary football comment now it’s a problem? This is the MH, right? Where it is designated for football discussions, right? The Gracie Hunt thing is getting annoying, haven’t said a word till now. Her little world is not football related, but I tolerate the little rich brat’s BS cuz. Won’t even get into the evening “open thread” whining that goes on here.

and my “original comment” wasn’t specifically “contrary” nor was it directed at anyone specific … simply that there are “other ways” to look at the SOS thing, and account for more than “just” last year’s W-L records *shrug* as for Gracie: like whatever, I don’t really care one way or another (she’s “sorta” Chiefs related, I guess?)

I think a the Vegas win totals is looking forward and takes into account offseason changes AND they are putting their money on it. Basing it on last seasons win totals doesn’t mean as much in the days of free-agency.

And win probabilities (based on my understanding of it) are more about how good the Chiefs are projected to be than their opponents. It just means we are the favorite in every game, it doesn’t indicate how difficult our opponents are vs. the rest of the league.

In the end, like preseason power rankings, they are all bound to be wrong. After all we all know the Chargers are going to win the AFC West for the 10th season in a row.

So we get Buffalo after their bye week, we get the Bengals on a short week for us, and we play the Eagles coming off of our bye after playing overseas while the Eagles are also coming off of their bye after playing a home game. It’s not big stuff, but a lot of little disadvantages against our toughest opponents.

I like the opening game vs Lions. I get that Bengals/Bills/Eagles might be more glitzy, but this’ll be a tough contest against a rising Lions team. They sure went against the grain selecting RB Gibbs and LB Campbell in the draft’s first round. Couple those two with TE LaPorta, S Branch and QB Hooker and I’d say that’s a good haul off the top. They’re still learning how to win, their defence was porous last year, but IMO they will continue their ascent towards playoff calibre and the Chiefs will need to be on their game from the start.

I think the reason the league set up that game for the kickoff is that they know that when we play the Bengals, Bills, or Eagles they’ll be heavily watched regardless of when they occur. Since the opening game will be heavily watched anyway, why waste a premium match up then…

I like the second half of the schedule – three potentially tough games – Philly, Buffalo, and Cincy – but spread out and not back to back. Danger might be having a let down game in between these matchups. How desperate are the Chargers going to be in the last game? They may need that more than us.

EAFOX
05/12/2023 5:23 am

The first part of the schedule that could be a concern is three straight divisional games – Denver, Chargers, Denver – followed by an international game against the Dolphins in Germany.
