Good morning, AG!

Today in Chiefs’ history, Tony Gonzalez is drafted in 1997

Elsewhere, in 2018, King Mswati III announced that he was changing his country’s name from the Kingdom of Swaziland to the Kingdom of Eswatini. In related news, in 2024, NovaChiefs learned that the Kingdom of Swaziland/Kingdom of Eswatini was a thing.

2005: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected to succeed Pope John Paul II, who had died some two weeks earlier; Ratzinger took the name Benedict XVI because Pope Ratzinger reminded people of Cliff from Cheers.

1995: In what was the worst act of terrorism/cowardism in U.S. history up to that time, a truck bomb nearly destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 and injuring more than 500 people. It also occurred on the same day as the execution of Arkansas white supremacist Richard Snell, who had “predicted” a bombing would take place that day. Despite rumors, it remains unclear if Snell’s execution served as a motive for the bombing.

1993: After a 51-day standoff with U.S. federal agents, some 80 members of the millennialist Branch Davidian religious group perished in a fire at their compound near Waco, Texas

1943: The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, an act of resistance by Polish Jews under Nazi occupation began

1927: Mae West was sentenced to 10 days in jail, convicted of obscenity and “corrupting the morals of youth” with her portrayal of a prostitute in the Broadway play Sex, which she also wrote

And finally, in 1809, Charles Darwin began evolving

I think that drafting Tony Gonzalez was one of the biggest achievements of Carl Peterson’s career as KC GM. I don’t give him a lot of credit for DT because it just sort of fell out that way, since 4 of the first 5 picks were HOF players, Carl picking at 4 should have gotten one of them. But he traded up to get Tony G, one of the few really good draft moves I recall him making.

Rob Gronkowski is widely regarded as the greatest TE of all time? Um, no. Tony Gonzalez was widely regarded as the greatest of all time with some arguing that Gronkowski was. Kelce however may likely go down as the greatest. He has surpassed most of Gronk’s accomplishments and many of Tony’s and set some of his own.

Gronkowski is the Gale Sayers of this arguement. If he could have played at his peak for more than 2 games at a time he’d have an arguement, but he couldnt.

Give me Walter Payton over Gale Sayers any day of the week. Greatness (sweetness) combined with longevity.

Should be noted that I do not consider longevity without greatness, i.e. Frank Gore, in the conversation at all of all time greatness.

I think when you take into account their QBs and their teams Tony G’s accomplishments shine out even more. Gronk only played with Tom Brady, a HOF QB, on winning teams. Kelce has never been on a losing team and has played with 2 QBs, an all-time great (Mahomes) and a solid starter (Smith). Tony G played on some awful teams with awful QBs, as well as a few good ones (Trent Green being the only one I can think of now), but without the benefit of the continuity and playing for consistent winners like Kelce and Gronk. So for him to be, right now, in the top 10 in receiving yards for ALL receivers is almost a miracle, the only TE among a lot of WRs. So don’t sleep on Tony G.

We are going to be going after a LT with our first pick most likely with a trade and I’m completely ok with that.

Maybe. Although I wouldn’t be disappointed in Patrick Paul or Sumataia in the 2nd.
