King Of The Hill: Week 2

To win the crown, you have to beat the best. To wear the crown, you have to defend it from the rest.

Welcome to AG’s first ever King of the Hill!  In these weekly articles we’ll be tracking the best regular season NFL team.

How will that be determined? Well it won’t be something as simple as record or point differential. No, to be the best you have to beat the best.  Since this is the first season of doing this, we’ll start with last year Superbowl Champion, the Kansas City Chiefs as Kings. To begin the season, they get to wear the crown.  For another team to take the crown from them, they simply have to beat them in a head-to-head matchup. Then the team that beat them gets to wear the crown until another team beats them, and then that team gets to wear the crown.  This goes on until the end of the season (or post season if the crown wearer makes it that far).

A few rules before we begin:

Rule #1 – Ties go to the crown wearer

Rule #2 – You lose the crown, even if you are “resting” starters.

Rule #3 – If the team that has the crown fails to make the post-season, the game is over, and they are the winners.

Who Has The Crown?

The Kansas City Chiefs

How Did They Get It?

Beating the 49ers 31-20 and winning Super Bowl LIV  last year

Who Have They Beaten To Defend It?

Houston 34-20

Who Is Their Next Opponent?

The Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs are 63-56-1 against the Chargers.  The Chiefs are 11-1 in their last twelve game including winning both games against the bolts last year, holding on 24-17 in Mexico City and claiming an important bye week 31-21 in the last game of the season.

Here’s to hoping these articles just become a documentation of how the Chiefs went a perfect 19-0.

I’ll be keeping an eye on NE to see if they pick up their pass game, but in his debut, Cam’s performance seemed pedestrian. Mahomes had more completions (24*) than Newton did attempts (19*) and a higher completion percentage (75*) than Newton (~74*) in spite of the significantly increased sample size. This during a game where the run game was being emphasized and the receivers seemed to be treating their role in the game as a light full-contact scrimmage workout.

I’ll say this much, though, anyone predicting a game outcome where KC scores fewer than 25 points isn’t worth taking seriously. If you see action where the regular-season over/under line is set at 400 points, the safe bet should be obvious.

I didn’t catch any of the NE game, how did there defense look compared to last year ? And yes I don’t think they will score under 30 all season

Adequate, which isn’t saying much against the ‘Phins, so holding them to 11 didn’t tell me much. If forced to provide an impression of the game, it would be that the game felt like a preseason mismatch game, almost as if MIA were playing their first one and NE was playing their third, the “dress rehearsal” game. Sort of like a Chiefs-Texans lite game, except that MIA’s much worse than HOU.

Can we call it the Bungle in the Jungle game? I’m glad you found my take to be useful in some way, lord knows I’m not an expert analyst of the game mechanics, I’m more a systems guy. And I think my discussions here demonstrate that pretty well, since even my comparison of Newton and Mahomes was each in the context of their own systems rather than an attempt to grade one over the other by direct statistical comparison. My comparison went in a different direction than that.

Besides, we all know that just because Cam wasn’t a prolific passer against Miami, that doesn’t mean he isn’t capable of it. We didn’t need to see our Chiefs torch the Texans’ D in the passing game to know that if they needed to, they could have, they just never needed to do it.

If Ryan Fitzpatrick is playing, the defense either looks like a worldbeater or the worst ever. Definitely take it with a grain of salt.

Why in Gods name are they still playing fitzpatrick? Its like their ultimate goal if everything goes right is to get to an 8-8 record.

Still grooming the heir apparent, at a guess. While Fitz might not be the best role model in every category, there’s still things their kid can learn. I forget who they grabbed, but I have a vague memory of thinking that he probably wouldn’t start until midseason, and without any preseason game experience it’s even more likely.

Besides, they stripped their team down to the framework, so they have to know that it’s going to be a multi-season rebuild. Since things still need work, might as well let Fitz take the blame for all the goofs and hiccups that are likely to be coming. It’ll be par for his career course and the kid won’t start out with a bad rep because the rest of the team isn’t ready.

I suppose it somewhat makes sense. Especially with the lack of preseason, but honestly at this point if that is the case they should be playing Tua 2 series a game. Fitz is never going to be more than replacement level qb and he’s proven that on 8 (!) different teams.

And Fitzpatrick is still my second favorite quarterback right now…

Meh. Id say this week’s game against a division opponent is more important.

Division is meaningless to the Chiefs now, they thoroughly own that and are in no risk of not winning it easily, so they need to focus on teams that can compete against them forthe #1 seed and it looks like Baltimore might be the only team that fits that bill, maybe Pittsburgh but both are still question marks on to whether theyre good or just their opponents are bad

Like with Green Bay and Pittsburgh, it’s just one game. I honestly don’t think Big Ben or Rodgers will make it all year without injury.
Baltimore is our biggest challenge I believe.. Big week 3

Its a long season. Shit happens and some teams will surprise. Case in point, our qb dislocated his knee last year on a qb sneak.

Really the most important game is the next game until you clinch that #1 spot

It would be if I was worried about losing, which I am not…if you want home field advantage in the the playoffs we need to win game 3 . So I will stick with my earlier statement..
