Into The Afternight: Our 3rd Shift O/T
21 repliesIf you’re still up and want to talk Chiefs, or just hang with fellow citizens of the Kingdom, this is the place.
Since the History Channel doesn’t seem to bother much with actual history anymore, I guess it’s up to me and my ilk to fill in, thus tonight’s pair.
Ian also has a video where he covered the WWII Liberator in .45 ACP, but the Deer Gun I knew nothing about until today. But that’s just me, now the rest of y’all get a turn.
With that, time’s yours.
I went on a bit of a digital hunt today to find a specific tool. The tool I thought it was was a hand auger. Not quite. That’s an outdoor posthole digger. So then I tried hand drill. No that’s rotary and used for precision work. I want one but it’s not what I was look for right then. So then I found another phrase: t-bar auger. That took me to some bushcrafting forums that had the exact name of the tool: scotch-eye auger. They’re not in use much outside the bushcrafting community, but 15 minutes of searching finally found the name of the tool and places that sell them. Being able to drill holes with a portable tool when camping is a handy thing to have.

I could open a bottle of red with that and that’s all that matters.
Looks like a beefed-up gimlet, to me.
I’m not sure of what i want to say so i will go with
GO CHIEIIIFFFSSS!!!
Always appropriate, same as ‘buck the Froncos’ and ‘ruck the Faiders’, et al.
a coherent and consistant message…needed more of that, or earlier , either way 🙂
tell the mrs whatever you want and blame it on me.
Remember when I used to get chided for getting involved in arguments I considered putting the community at risk of a return of something like the Smith Wars? Can’t get much earlier than that, but those who were confident that those problems were settled prevailed.
And I dunno how I could have done more to keep a lid on things since last March, and keeping the site going in a football-free offseason. My payoff? Scorn and derision when I try to tamp things down. Now the SW environment is a fixture here, and I no longer have the energy to keep working to keep the article feed populated any more than I already do. Why bother, when many on both sides are bound and determined to keep this political Smith War going until there’s no community left here.
I’ll keep this series going and populated with the bits and bobs I come across, for the sake of the lurkers (both of them, or so seems likely at this point) and because this is my ultimate link to the site. The day I stop the Afternights is the day I resign from any assigned duties around here.
And I’m the psychologically disabled one, the guy who had his life changed for the worse in the process of doing all that. Real motivating.
I don’t understand. I generally enjoy the OT discussions. I’ve gotten heated at points, and you guys correct me of I’m off the target here, but I think something like tonight i kept it mostly above the fray and level headed without being overly antagonistic and even the parts of the thread I didn’t contribute to seemed mostly devoid of any real vitriol.
I get that I’m willing to engage in some fairly deep down the rabbit hole discussions where I buck certain historical or contemporary narratives, but I try to keep level head about and present things in a rational manner but still participate in formal relevant discussions. Do the political/ medical/ historical discussions really dissuade broader community engagement?
who are you and what have you done to suden?
Hey now I thought tonight was generally level headed. That doesn’t mean I won’t contradict stuff i disagree with or rant to flesh out more fully.
I’m always opinionated.i like to think I’m only an asshole half the time but I know being opinionated can come across assholish quite a bit.
On that last point, we are in full agreement, since I’m opinionated myself. Lord knows it’s gotten me treated as worse than an asshole more than once, whether I kept my language polite or not so much.
For me, the comments here aren’t exactly hostile territory, but calling it more like a place for a potential ambush comes pretty damn close.
takes more than one night of not being a dick
I tossed out a generic shoe, if you find the fit poor, best leave it there.
Meanwhile, I have no apology for the above. tl;dr I’ve gone through a psychological crisis while putting everything I could into AG, and right now I’m struggling with eating enough every day. Again. Don’t expect me to be able to keep perfectly to standard, especially since I’ve had to cope with those who prefer their standards in pairs.
I hope you’re counting me as one of the both. If not, let’s go with a few!! Hang in there BRaG. I read and appreciate your stuff damn near every night. I tend to be more in line with you than not, but no matter. We all need a distraction now and then. Besides, have you checked out any of those “other” threads? I think I’ll stick around here.
This is also historical, and while he doesn’t touch on the man’s woodcraft skills, the weapons used by the man the Soviets nicknamed The White Death deserve a close look.
