That was…spectacular.
for those in the back, no one wants to deny your right to observe your chosen religion.
we want to be able to live without those beliefs infringing on everyone’s’ daily life and, by extension, legislation.
freedom of=freedom from
I’m a religious guy (as you all know). Separation of church (or temple, synagogue, mosque, sangha, whatever else) and state is what keeps us from being Saudi Arabia or Iran.
sitting members advocating theocracy worries me.
the founders were explicit in this regard (not all, but all the ones we remember)
A theocracy sets a dangerous precedent. Look (again) at Saudi Arabia. Many would argue that Sunnis and Shi’ites are both Muslims (and that’s a correct argument), but the Sunnis (in power) view Shi’ites (~10% of the population) as a threat and have imprisoned and executed many of them.
So could it be if one Christian sect (or heck, even a denomination) gains power in the US.
heaven forbid it’s the baptists
Q: You know what the problem with Baptists is?
A: They aren’t held under nearly long enough.
And my mother-in-law was a faithful Southern Baptist until the day she passed, but I still called her Mom, and I always meant it. I even brought her husband along for the ride, but let’s not stir up bad memories. I still miss her, but not as much as Mrs BRAG.
How is Mrs. BRaG doing?
Hanging in there, but not up for much socializing around here. After her right fibula disintegrated, she put more load on her left leg, which wrecked her knee, so that’s another chronic pain for her to deal with.
The bad news is that they’re ramping up to reduce her aortal aneurysm, which is a serious undertaking. The good(ish) news is that she finally got to see the last scan they did, and says that while it’s serious, it isn’t in a problematic spot. While that’s very good news indeed, it’s not enough to counterbalance the bad, let alone erase it. As Wellington’s reputed to have said after Waterloo, it (was) is going to be a near-run thing. Sorry for the paraphrase, but it just happened in the flow.
After 30+ years, you might get the impression that I’m rather fond of her, and you wouldn’t be far from right. Losing her would be a major blow, one that could potentially break the Afternight streak.
I hear that. If something happened to Mrs. Nasrani I’m not sure what I would do…
I do have some expertise in navigating healthcare claims (as do you, no doubt) give a shout, I’ll help to my abilities.
Say “hi” for me.
Glad to hear she’s doing as well as can be expected. I can’t imagine the pain that she must feel constantly with the one leg having to do the work of two.
Hang in there, both of you.
it was the different sons of Abraham, I think. can’t remember when that split happened.
why people hold fast to these differences basically made out of whole cloth in ages past that make a fellow believer, in essence, a mortal enemy.
makes no sense to me
Isaac and Ishmael. That was the split. Judaism/Christianity hold that Isaac was the son which was almost sacrificed, and Islam holds that it was Ishmael. (The Bible actually says that Ishmael is the progenitor of the modern-day Arabs also.)
Ok, but what is the Sunnis and Shi’ites split over?
I thought it was about the sons as well.
That’s about who should rightly succeed Muhammad as leader of the Muslims (and other things that I’m not confident enough to speak about, like theological issues, something about 12 imams). Sunnis (the majority) believe that the caliph can be elected while Shi’ites believe that he should come from the family of Muhammad – who had no surviving sons.
Therefore, Shi’ites reject the first three Rashidun (rightly guided) caliphs, who were the heads of the Muslim Empires (pre-Umayyad/Abbasid/Fatimid/Ottoman) after Muhammad died – in the eyes of a Shi’ite, the leadership of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, Uthman and Umar bin al-Khattab are invalid, and the first legal successor was Muhammad’s cousin/son in law Ali.
Further reinforcing this split, Ali’s grandson al-Husayn was killed by (I believe) Umayyad caliph Mu’awiya in Karbala’, Iraq, in a day that Shi’ites the world over commemorate as ‘Ashoura (the tenth of the Islamic month Muharram).
Ahh, it comes back to me now. I did not want to wiki it, thanks for the primer w/o the rabbit hole.
As mentioned that’s not the sole reason for the enmity between the two – and even within Shi’ism you have Zaydi (which, I believe holds to seven imams instead of 12), Shafi’i, Twelver… all about a discrepancy as to whether there were 7 right imams, 9 (I think) or 12… and then a whole host of theological differences between Sunnis and Shi’ites. I have heard that the Shi’ites recognize a different set of hadith (sayings/teachings of Muhammad) than Sunnis, which opens a whole other can of worms.
(Please note that some of those names above, particularly Shafi’i, may refer to a school of thought/madhhab rather than a – for lack of better term – denomination within Shi’ism.)
To complicate things, the Shi’ism of Iraq/Iran (Twelver) is different than the Shi’ism of the Houthis in Yemen/Saudi Arabia (which, I believe, is Zaydi Shi’ism… it’s Sevener Shi’ism, at any rate).
no doubt, like Catholicism (2) and Protestantism (god knows how many….jebus)
Put in my 2c, but thanks for the sect origin correction.
The son(s) of Mohammed, I believe. At any rate, two competing successors to him split the religion in two, in a generation or two after his death, and if Islam were to take over the world (just like The Brain), it would still be at war with itself.
Not what I’d call a good endgame, and a lot of Xtians are about as bad. Converting all sins into crimes is one of the worst totalitarian mechanisms out there. God save me from any system like that, ’cause what we have’s already bad enough.
There’s a judge who was removed from their courtroom for expressing hatred for gay men, and stating that anyone with a Latino last name can’t be trusted.
Now she’s filed suit, trying to get back on the bench. She’s also Black and in NYC, so I highly doubt that this particular cancer’s a Republican. Religious stupidity crosses the aisle, too.
bigots come in all colors for sure
And from all political parties, too.
Too bad that the faithful of the Big Two refuse to clean up their own problems, like the new Title IX policy, designed by the same person who sent the infamous “Dear Colleague” letter.
But hey, Kollege Kangaroo Kourts don’t bother the DCN crowd. Instead, they’re applauding this travesty. Well, travesty if you give a damn about due process being involved when the stakes are ruining lives, guilt totally optional.

If your ideology requires that you hate the federal government, then have to turn to the same entity after a disaster, you might want to reconsider your ideology. Dipshit.
you think Trump turned in disaster relief requests for Mir Lago yet?
Trump turned in PPP twice, millions for EIDL at 3%, and ERC for probably a million plus. Yeah I think he’s turned hurricane relief at mar a logo, probably before it hit.
large % of covid PPP went to cronies
“I will be the oversight”
Yeah, Desantis and Florida are suddenly all in favor of Socialism
He spent money from covid relief to send texans to Massachusettes
he voted against hurricane Sandy relief

The price you pay for believing conspiracy theories, which is not only all the rage, it’s bipartisan, to boot!
But by all means, focus on the ones on the side of the party you hate, since they’re probably conspiring, just as most believe. Except they aren’t, neither Party’s even coherent anymore, but outing the conspiracy theorists on your own side is risky. Why buck the trend, amIrite?
(No, I’m not, since riding a bad trend leads to bad things happening, so I’ll buck)
hey, it’s tropical (sic)
I’ll bite, what “left” conspiracy as whacky as this gets mainstreamed?
(the anti-gun nutters are the extreme, this shit is normal on the other side)
FYI I don’t hate conservatism as I grew up with, I hate what it has become by embracing things formerly shunned.
yes both are bad, I think one is a more immediate danger to our system of gov’t, hence my focus.

2 wrongs don’t make a right, but 3 lefts do ?

customer: “where am I gonna find 4 people with no issues???”

HE does not indeed
Haha, I’m sure after he read that he got all teary-eyed…????
SAS isn’t necessarily wrong, pending the investigation, but he’s still wrong. Demanding that someone, anyone, be fired encourages folks to look for someone to fix the blame to, and by the time that’s done, they’ll have forgotten to look at any underlying problems at the system level, ensuring that it’ll crop up again. That’s why my philosophy is to find and fix what caused the problem, and only then, especially if you come up empty on that, do you consider if anyone’s at fault.
SAS is a talker, not a t6ech, so it’s no wonder he doesn’t bother with troubleshooting and analysis. Shooting his mouth off is his specialty.
he needs fired
yes!
agreed
Tony, take the UNDER!
good article on why scoring is down this season … some QB’s older, some hurt, some just not playing (Watson, ha!) … 10 new HC’s, several new OC’s, maybe defenses are better (?) but it’s definitely down this year

I hope the Chiefs can do that Sunday
COREY LINSLEY

C, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
Chargers C Corey Linsley (knee) is questionable for Week 4 against the Texans.Linsley was not spotted in the open portion of Friday’s practice but Chargers coach Brandon Staley said he expects him to start. It’s good news for an LA offense that just lost their left tackle for the year. Linsley will likely need to make it through a final session of warmups before getting the green light on Sunday.
seems Herbert is already beat up maybe the Texans will beat him up some more
DONOVAN SMITH

T, TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
Bucs LT Donovan Smith (elbow) is questionable for Week 4 against the Chiefs. Smith has been sidelined since suffering a hyperextended elbow in the season opener. He was able to practice on a limited basis all week, suggesting he has a decent chance to play. Smith returning would be a boost to a struggling offense.
good evening AG
still stunned the NFL decided to keep the game in Tampa …
“Hi honey, what would you like to do this weekend?”
“well, we’ve lost our car, our house, all of our belongings, there’s no electricity for 100 miles, food is scarce and there’s no fresh water to drink or bathe in”
“great, let’s go the the Bucs game!”
sounds like a typical Raiders fans convo……
