Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Chiefs won the coin toss and deferred, so the Super Bowl started with the 49ers on offense, and for a while they did whatever they wanted. Juszczyk was wide open for 18 on the 2nd play, then McCaffrey got back-to-back 11 yard gains on a checkdown then a run, but then he got the ball punched out by Chenal and Karlaftis to bail out the Chiefs defense.

The Chiefs offense did not start hot, as a loss of 3 on a Pacheco run and a Kelce screen for 1 set up a 3rd and 12, where Mahomes was forced to checkdown to McKinnon for 8 then punt the ball right back. The 49ers had another big play with an 18 yard pass to Aiyuk over the middle, but then they went backwards as a Deebo end around lost 2 yard, and a false start and hold backed then up another 15 yards, making the distance unreasonable and leading to a punt after a couple short gains against prevent defense.

The Chiefs looked slightly better on the next drive, as Pacheco got 10 yards on the first play, but then Chase Young destroyed Donovan Smith for an easy sack, eventually creating a 3rd and 14 on which Mahomes couldn’t find anybody open and only scrambled for 4, leading to another punt. The 49ers on the other hand continued to put together big play after big play. On a 3rd and 9 Purdy lofted up a ball to ex-Chief Chris Conley to pick up 18 and easily move the sticks. The next play Purdy had forever to find McCloud for 19. But Purdy overthrew Aiyuk in the endzone, and FAU came up big to drop McCaffrey for a loss of 4, and the 49ers faced a 3rd and 14 going into the 2nd quarter.

2nd Quarter

The 2nd quarter started with a beautiful play by McDuffie to knock away the pass to Deebo in the endzone after the blitz failed to hit. The 49ers kicker had been shaky, but he nailed the Super Bowl record 55 yard field goal to give San Francisco a 3-0 lead.

The Chiefs managed to pick up a 1st down on 3rd and inches on an end around to Rice where he maybe tried to lateral it to Watson. The very next play was a bomb to Hardman for 53 yards that took the ball to the 49ers 9 yard line, but it was the Chiefs turn to give it away as Pacheco fumbled and the 49ers recovered.

The first play was a bad one for Bolton, as he pulled Purdy by the horsecoller and turned an 8 yard gain into 23, but the defense shut them down, forcing a 3rd and 9 where Reid got Purdy as he tried to buy time and force the punt. The Chiefs offense continued to struggle, although thanks in part to a bad call on an intentional grounding despite Gray being a couple yards away from the ball. On the ensuing 3rd and 16 Mahomes could find anybody and the 3 yard scramble was not nearly enough.

The defense fell apart on the next drive. The first play Karlaftis had a nice play to force an incompletion, but then Purdy found Deebo for 12, then they gained 18 yard on 3 runs. The defense finally managed to force a 3rd and short, but Sneed smacked a 49er in the helmet to give them a free 15 yards. 2 plays later the 49ers had a trick play where Jauan Jennings got the lateral, then threw it back to McCaffrey who took it in for the touchdown to make it 10-0.

The Chiefs got the ball for what might be the final chance to keep the game close at half, and it was run heavy early. The first 4 plays were all runs except for a checkdown to Pacheco, gaining a combined 22 yards and setting up a 3rd and 9 after a Hardman false start, but Mahomes scrambled out of the pocket and found Watson across his body for 21 yards. Watson then dropped what would have been a big gain on the next play (although to be fair it was a little behind him), but an 8 yard checkdown to Pacheco the 6 yards to Rice on a pick play moved the chains. The next play was a quick pass to Rice on the slant for 11. Unfortunately the offense stalled, as on 3rd and 5 Mahomes couldn’t find anybody and Butker had to come out to make it 10-3. The 49ers just handed it to McCaffrey, and took that lead to half.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the 2nd half, and it was a tough start as Pacheco couldn’t handle the pitch from Mahomes and lost 12 yards. Mahomes got a little of it back on a 10 yard checkdown to Gray, but then Mahomes badly overthrew Kelce leading to a pick. The defense bailed him out though, forcing a quick 3-and-out as Purdy could do nothing on 3 dropbacks, forcing a punt that was downed by Conley on the 2.

The offense got set up for a career defining drive, but Kelce got called down short of the marker on the screen (it was close, but I agree), and Pacheco got stuffed on 3rd and 1, so it was another punt. The defense continued to dominate, forcing their own 3-and-out thanks to Jones, Karlaftis, and Chenal blowing up the first play for an 8 yard loss. The 49ers punted, and Chris Conley made another spectacular play on the tackle.

The offense finally started to get a bit warm, as the first play was a short pass to Kelce for 11. A couple plays later it was 3rd and 4, and Mahomes took it himself, having to power through defenders to get past the marker. The next play it was Mahomes on the ground again, this time catching the 49ers completely off guard for 22 yards. Unfortunately the offense stalled at this point, forcing Butker to break an hour-old Super Bowl record with a 57 yard field goal to make it 10-6.

The Chiefs defense continued their domination, with the 49ers gaining no yards on their next 3 plays (with McDuffie almost getting the pick on 3rd down). The offense also continued to not do much, as on 3rd and 2 Mahomes couldn’t do anything. Special teams ended up being the offense, as the punt hit tje foot of Luter and Watson recovered it in the 20, and one play later Mahomes threw a touchdown to a wide open MVS to take a 13-10 lead.

The 3rd quarter came to an end with the 49ers finally starting to put a drive together. They faced a quick 3rd and 5, but Purdy found Jennings for a 17 yard gain. A screen to Deebo went 9, then Juszczyk got 2 to set the 49ers up in Chiefs territory to start the final frame.

4th Quarter

The 4th quarter started with the 49ers coontinuing driving down the field. Purdy found Aiyuk over the middle wide open for a quick 20 yard gain, then a couple plays later it was 4th and 3 deep in Chiefs territory. Shanahan was aggressive and went for it, and the throw to Kittle on the sideline saw him dive and barely move the chains. Two plays later Jennings unusually beat Sneed, and Purdy found him for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked, but San Francisco still took a 16-13 lead.

Mahomes finally came alive on the ensuing drive. The first play he found Kelce for 16. After a couple plays for no gain it was 3rd and 10, but Mahomes found Kelce wide open for 13. A low snap on the next play forced an incompletion, but after that Mahomes found Watson for 25 yards. It was finally Pacheco’s turn as he gained 16 yards on the next 2 plays, setting up 1st and goal from the 4. But the San Francisco defense held, and the Chiefs had to bring Butker to tie it at 16.

With under 6 minutes left the 49ers wanted a long drive to score after burning clock, and that’s what they got. The first play was a 23 yard gain to Jennings, but after that they slowly matriculated the ball down the field. They burned the clock to the 2 minute warning in field goal range on 3rd and 5, having a chance to be in a strong position with a conversion. But a well timed blitz forced the incompletion. The 49ers kicker made another long field goal to give them a 19-16 lead.

The Chiefs got the ball with 1:53 left and 2 timeouts needing a field goal to send it to overtime. The first play was a quick pass to Kelce for 9, then a Mahomes scramble for 3 picked up the 1st. He then checked down to Gray for 12 yards, then short to Watson for 8. He had to throw it away on the next play, setting up a 3rd and 2, which was converted on a checkdown to McKinnon for 7. Now in field goal range, Mahomes had to scramble for 3, then threw it away, setting up 3rd and 7 with 16 seconds left with a timeout left. On the play Mahomes found Kelce over the middle who ran all the way to the 11 yard line with 10 seconds left. The first play was a quick pass to a covered Kelce. With 6 seconds left they brought out Butker, who hit the chip shot to send the Super Bowl to overtime for the 2nd time in history.

Overtime

The new overtime rules mean that both teams had an opportunity to hold the ball no matter what. San Francisco won the toss, and decided to get the ball first. The first play looked like it may have been a pick, but Bolton couldn’t quite get it. The defense eventually forced a 3rd and 13, and got the incompletion, but McDuffie got called for a hold giving them the free 1st down. After a couple McCaffrey runs it was 3rd and 2, but they converted again, this time on an 11 yard pass to Aiyuk. A couple plays later Purdy did a nice job avoiding pressure and finding McCaffrey, who took it for 24 yards. On a 2nd and 12 Purdy rolled out, juked Karlaftis to buy time, and found Juszczyk who made a catch that maybe wasn’t, but it converted the 1st. The 49ers stalled after that as on 3rd down Chris Jones got quick pressure, and the 49ers kicked the field goal to take the 22-19 lead.

The Chiefs faced a quick 4th and inches after a short pass to Rice was short and Pacheco was just short on 3rd down, and thankfully Mahomes scrambled on the roll out for 8. Mahomes found MVS for a decent gain on the next play, but he got spun backwards and ended up losing 3 yards, then went right back to him for 7 to make it 3rd and 6, where Mahomes beat the blitz to Rice for 13 yards. Two passes to Pacheco gained 9 yards inches short of the marker, but no problem as Mahomes scrambled for 19 yards down to the 13. A Pacheco run and Kelce screen got 10, setting up 1st and goal from the 3. And Hardman got the touchdown to win the Super Bowl!

I have a fact about this Super Bowl that I bet you haven’t heard yet:

This is the only Super Bowl ever to not have a single kick return.

And there was a net total of 12 return yards (kick, punt, INT, fumble) for the entire game.

Remember: Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have NEVER led at halftime in the Super Bowl.
They are 3-1
Teams leading at the half are 40-13
The Chiefs are two of the 13

Chiefs were not leading SB 1 at the half … and they lost that game

Chiefs WERE leading SB 4 at the half and won … they are 1 of the 40 and 3 of the 13

FWIW

You said “The Chiefs are two of the 13,” not, “The Mahomes Chiefs are two of the 13.”

Too pedantic, and that’s my gig.

Attend: The Mahomes-era Chiefs have played in 4 SBs, and have won their third. That establishes that Nova was talking only about the Mahomes era, and not Chiefs history. As for the two games Ups mentioned, neither one qualified for Nova’s definition, and the other 11 times have happened across all those years.

In short, you served up a red herring, and it wasn’t even cooked properly. You are literally better than that, dude.

wrong, Batman!

while Nova DID say in the first line that he was referring to the Mahomes Era Chiefs, he THEN brought in facts about ALL Super Bowl teams, which includes the Dawson Era Chiefs

Sorry, Robin.
BRaG is correct. The parameters were established in the first sentence. Why you felt it necessary to bring up facts not in evidence is beyond me.
But if it made you feel good, you’re STILL wrong.
Them being 2 of the 13 means they accounted for 2 of the 13 teams losing. Since they were not behind at the half AND won either game you needed to mention, they STILL only accounted for 2 of the 13.
If you’re going to be that ridiculous, at least understand the subject.

Jeez. I opened with being specific about Mahomes and the Chiefs. That’s not enough for you? I have to repeat myself every time so someone doesn’t ignore the obvious?
Plus, he’s STILL wrong even if you allow it.

Mahomes and Reid entered rare territory with the comeback victory. Mahomes became the seventh player from the NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB to win three championships and two regular-season MVPs in his first seven seasons, joining legendary players in Larry Bird, Guy Lafleur, Bill Russell, Mickey Mantle, Stan Musial and Joe DiMaggio.

The Chiefs are the first repeat champions since the 2003-04 Patriots, snapping the largest such drought in NFL history.

Mahomes now has 15 playoff wins; only Brady and Montana have more in NFL history.

All three of Mahomes’ Super Bowl wins have come after Kansas City trailed by 10+ points.

This is the fourth Super Bowl championship in Chiefs history.

The Chiefs are the fifth team to win three Super Bowls in a five-year span.

Kelce is the third player in NFL history to lead three Super Bowl championship teams in yards receiving.

Andy Reid is tied with Joe Gibbs and Bill Walsh for the third-most Super Bowl titles by a head coach in NFL history.

Finally, we have a win where the refs were nowhere to be found. I can’t think of any calls we got that mattered.
We win, they lose.
Finally simple.
