Chiefs vs. Bengals: The Agony of Defeat.
35 repliesSadly, our beloved Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead, 27-24. Also sadly, we give deserved props to the Bengals on a great game! Now, we know you’re all out there hurting Chiefs fans and angry at that fact, but if you want to talk about it. We’re here for you. Join AG to discuss…
Hello Arrowhead Guys. I know, I know… It’s true, I shouldn’t come at my fellow Kansas City Chiefs fans with that type of attitude and tone after a loss of this magnitude on your own personal cellphone screen or personal computer (How dare I?). That wasn’t very sensitive of me, and I apologize. However, we have to start out somewhere as we attempt to make sense of this Kansas City Chiefs loss to the Cincinnati Bengals that ripped out our collective hearts and beat us with them like a… well, like a still beating heart that was ripped out of a chest, still beating “US“. It hurts, it’s painful and there aren’t many words that I’m going to put together that are going to put back together your hearts and that are going to replace that sorrow we all feel with joy. I wish there were, as I don’t want my brotherhood of Chiefs fans to be down in the dumps all offseason long. But when your team blows a 21-3 lead in an AFC Championship game and gets sent home in overtime, the only way to heal is actually over time.
What I can do is take the blame. As it’s my fault the Kansas City Chiefs lost. I got a little to self-assured and cocky. You see, where I was watching the championship game there just so happened to be some Cincinnati Bengals fans in the building. From head-to-toe they were covered in Bengals gear. On their faces too, as they were literally face painted with Bengals colors and it was a bit odd to see their presence in a Kansas City Chiefs hangout spot. After the Red and Gold took the lead 21-3, I quipped, “That make-up is going to look a little runny when their tears start running down their faces, ruining that look.” It was insensitive and I felt it in the pit of my stomach that-that type of bravado and unsportsmanlike conduct wasn’t going to do the Chiefs any favors throughout the remainder of the game. AG, karmatically & unfortunately, I was correct. Because after that smartass comment, the comeback was on like brilliant sarcasm.
Immediately, the Chiefs tried to score and left the first half painfully and without any points, even though they were 1st & 10 at the Bengals 14 yard line with plenty of time. In fact, ironically the game clock had “Thirteen Seconds” left and the Chiefs left the field without so much as a field goal as time just simply ran off the clock as Tyreek Hill was stuffed at the goal line with 5 seconds to go. I thought (and Chiefs Kingdom probably thought), ‘no worries.’ The Chiefs are getting the ball back in the second half and they’ll score again, right? Wrong (freaking so wrong). The Chiefs didn’t score again until they kicked a field goal that put the game into overtime. I’m not going to dredge over everything that happened in this game as it’s a little too fresh and way too painful, but I will post the highlights. I doubt many of you will have the strength to watch them, but here they are nonetheless:
Lowlights of the Game.
I love the Kansas City Chiefs, and I’m proud of the season they put together after starting out 3-4 and being counted out by the world.

Here’s the KC lowlights of our painful defeat.
Bengals vs. Chiefs AFC Championship Highlights | NFL 2021 https://t.co/S2bP79ryiK via @YouTube
It may be too soon for some of you to watch–or all of you–but eventually, I encourage you to have the courage to watch it as it was a incredible game of football for NFL fans. It was the fourth AFC Championship in a row at Arrowhead Stadium for a team that has had nine NFL seasons with four wins or less (1977, 1978, 1982 [strike], 1987, 1988, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012) and four-five win seasons. I’m not going to list all of the years as I think you get my point. That we’ve been through much worse than going to four championship games in a row at Arrowhead Stadium and only walking away with only one Lombardi Trophy as the victory spoils. Now, I know for a fact that some of you walked through at least 2007-2012 with me during that historically bad Chiefs run where our biggest success was a 2010 playoff run with Todd Haley and Matt Cassel bouncing us out of the playoffs against the Baltimore Ravens like a pass off Tyreek Hill’s hands…
Arrowhead Guys (and Gals), I know it’s really easy to cry into oblivion and be depressed. I know, because I’m depressed. I’m heartbroken and internally I’m thoroughly defeated. I get it, believe me I do. Like most years, I truly believed that we were going to win it all. Especially after that miraculous win against the Buffalo Bills that happened against all odds. I thought it was our time. But the Football Gods thought differently and that’s okay. It really is. In football hindsight, we’ve all been through so much worse than getting “Falcon’d” in the AFC Championship at home. Perhaps the universe thought we could all use a little “being humbled” in our lives. I don’t know… I’m definitely not in charge of the universe. But I do know this, I love the Chiefs universe and I appreciate and respect my friends and family within Chiefs Kingdom. Keep your heads up, reflect on the good times that this Kansas City Chiefs season provided us because it truly was an awesome run after the Chiefs limped out of the NFL starting gates 3-4 and the world laughed as they all assumed we had no chance to even make the playoffs. Yet, here we are discussing the Chiefs losing in the AFC Championship Game. There’s not much consolation in that fact, but there is a little perspective if you want to see it.
They Blew It!
That’s a Solid Argument Too!
As expected, places like Twitter and Facebook are full of jokes, memes and GIF’s about how the Kansas City Chiefs blew a 21-3 lead. And all of them are completely fair, because the Red and Gold did “blow it” like a hurricane blowing out your birthday candles and your whole-f’ing-house along with it. Gone. Over. Finished! You are done-SON! In a single game elimination, the Chiefs were outed after getting all of our hopes up with a solid lead against a great Cincinnati Bengals team that were on an incredible run in the playoffs. Like all of you, in the first half I thought the Kansas City Chiefs were going to the Super Bowl again. Throughout the game, my wife was telling me to enjoy it. “We got this!”–she said. But in the pit of my stomach, I was scared shitless in the second half that the Chiefs were going to lose because Patrick Mahomes didn’t look like he was having fun. He looked angry and pissed off, like he did to start the NFL season. The magic from the Buffalo Bills game just didn’t seem to be there and I wondered what the problem was. Nevertheless, the Chiefs made it to overtime despite Mahomes almost fumbling that opportunity away as the Chiefs attempted to burn clock instead of score, before Butker drilled the kick and the Chiefs won the coin toss. It just wasn’t meant to be.
“IF”
IF Tyreek Hill comes down with this catch, we’re all a happier Chiefs fanbase.
— W.A. Watts (@ChiefBlindersOn) January 31, 2022
I really kind of wish Mahomes would have went for the easy first down here. But that’s not his style.
What a play be the Bengals defense though. That’s great defense that is also a knife to the ?. https://t.co/XFf9vCrmgI
There’s always a lot of “IF’s in the AGONY OF DEFEAT.
It’s true, it’s true. The Chiefs had an opportunity to win at Arrowhead Stadium and advance to the Super Bowl for the third time in three years. It’s true, our team “Blew-it” like snot and fluid out the nose after a great joke. It’s true that Patrick Mahomes played terrible in the second half and was like a magician that left his rabbit at home and got booed off stage. It’s true that we talked a lot of shit about winning the Super Bowl and like Tom Brady, we’ll be watching from home. It’s true that Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce couldn’t get the job done and got peace-out at Arrowhead. It’s true that the Grim Reaper killed the Chiefs in front of Chiefs Kingdom and millions of fans around the world, ruthlessly like DEATH. It’s true that SHOWTIME is over until next season. It’s true that Andy Reid couldn’t read his second half game plan and that his team just couldn’t get it done in their own house against the Cincinnati Bengals. It’s true that the Bengals (not Chiefs) are going to the SUPER BOWL. It’s true that we’re all more heart broken than people still looking for dates at 11:59 and 47 seconds on February 13th with 13 Seconds left on the clock. It’s true that it all freakin’ sucks more than Willie Gay’s vacuum before he beat the Chiefs out of it.
You know what else is TRUE?
We all still love the Kansas City Chiefs! At least I do and I will until the day DEATH takes me, probably while the Chiefs are freakin’ killin’ me during a playoff game. I’ll probably just clutch my heart and die right there on the spot. Dead like the Chiefs Super Bowl chances this year. And you know what? That’s fine because I wouldn’t trade being a fan of this team for anything in the world. I love the Kansas City Chiefs and I’m proud of the season they had and I’m looking forward to next year where I’ll still assume the Chiefs are going to win the Super Bowl because: There’s Thrill in Victory and There’s Agony in Defeat! I know and believe the Kansas City Chiefs will give us all that thrill again, someday. But right now “BB” Chiefs “King’dom, The Thrill Is Gone. And I apologize, as it’s all my fault. I’m sorry, because now it may be the time for tears due to the agony of defeat. Nevertheless, always remember… Geaux Chiefs! Sadly and regretfully…

Mahomes should have taken a post-game drug test to see if the Bengals didn’t secretly ‘mickey’ his Gatorade at halftime…..
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!
If Flores doesn’t land an HC gig…bye-bye, Spags?
it’d be Racist if we didn’t……..
Kali Mahomes
@ClayWendler
Bengals DT BJ Hill had more catches than Tyreek Hill in that second half.
I’m still sick.
I was going to ask how you’re doing. You’ll be alright. We could maybe be better in only a few months time, and we were pretty fuckin’ good before.
Get well soon brother.
1st quarter of the game

Second quarter of the game

Stop right there
Why would I watch that game again? Saw enough the first time.
Never…. I deleted every game I had recorded from this year Monday morning.. time to start a new…
It was not your fault, but mine.
It was your heart on the line
I really fucked it up this time
Didn’t I, My dear?
I forgot (FORGOT!? How could I??) to buy the tub of mini doughnuts at Giant on Saturday, and eat the entire thing buy game time. Clearly my fault. I hope the Kingdom has it in their hearts for forgive me. I will never forgive myself, though.
Me either Nova, me either.
That’s so funny!
It’s killing me what song is that from ?
That’s the one
40 minutes well spent, Come on Veach work your magic…..
It isn’t necessary for everyone to spend that 40 minutes of time, but after a loss like this there’s obviously a lot of fan and media chatter. And if you just read the Veach snippets, the context of the conversation can be lost because there’s also a lot of coach speak vs. facetious media questions that they know they’re not getting real answers to even before they ask the questions. I also listened to the Reid presser, and Andy is even more coach speak than Veach. But it was a good interview. I came away feeling like both these guys are extremely disappointed and surprised they’re not preparing for the Super Bowl. But, I also think that them thanking the fans was extremely genuine (as opposed to some coaches and GM’s). I think they both expected more than a loss to the Bengals in the AFC Championship game after coming out winning 21-3. And in particular (and on another note) I think Andy really wanted/hoped and thought that EB would become a NFL Head Coach. With Pat, I think the notion is that he still tries to put everything on his shoulders and got caught chasing the victory by himself against the Bengals. It’s just a theory, but I think the Grim Reaper stuff and the Buffalo miracle made him chase the Bengals win more than if we would have beat Buffalo in typical fashion. Sometimes, you just try too hard and can’t will things to work (we could see on it his face throughout the game, he wasn’t having much fun even with the lead). I think that happened to the Chiefs on Sunday and then they spent more time feeling sorry for themselves and trying too hard to win the game than when they’re all flowing and working together, beautifully. Additionally, I think it’s important to remember that we had a close shot at beating the Bengals and had we won, we’d all be a lot more happy about the team, players and coaching staff right now. But none of that information makes it less painful. I’m starting… Read more »
This was a great find. Good post.
Another great article by our very own CBO….. Ya, the old lady said after the game I think I’m more upset than you..
I was like I’ve been a chiefs fan my entire life, i’m kind of used to this.. They all suck when you lose. Especially the way that one happened, Oh fucking well, another year will be upon us before we know it…LETS GO CHIEFS !!!!!!!!!!
I’m starting to have a strange feeling that this might have been our down year. We struggled A LOT for during parts of the season and were still 12-5 with 2 playoff victories.
We saw how much a couple players on defense can help (Bolton, Ingram). Losing a couple lesser guys and gaining a couple really good guys could help a lot.
On offense, we could easily get better with the addition of a playmaker and a RT.
Hopeful thinking? Yes. Very possible? Yes!
We have no choice but to get better, these other teams have been built to beat us, even teams in our own division are starting to close the gap..
It’s going to be a crazy off season , looking forward to seeing how things shake out…
The Agony of The Feet … oh, I know it all too well, but what’s this thing about you not being in charge of the universe? well damn, and here I was all set to ask for … well, BBQ would be nice start, but like what-EVER
yah, can’t blame the Bengals or their fans … I blame the Offense (but only the Second Half Offense) and Reid (and maybe Bienemy) and wonder why, as the Bengals GAVE us the run to take away the pass, why oh why oh why did the Cheifs NOT run the ball more? questions questions!
ah well, so it goes and so it went … to the very best of my knowledge, no wars were started and nobody died because the Chiefs lost a football game, so it’s all good
also, the Asian calendar says this is The Year of the Tiger, so there’s that … and football WILL be back in 7 or 8 months (draft and training camp don’t count)
In football, there is no offseason. Outside of the loss, I love this time of year attempting to figure out how we’re going to put together the team that will win the Super Bowl, next year!
This loss feels different. Maybe it’s because it was to Cincinnati, but it feels different.
As a Chiefs fan with a friend who’s a Bengals fan, it’s good to see them in the big dance after having a long postseason drought – something to which we can all relate. And it’s true that that was a very good game – obviously I (and all of us in Chiefs Kingdom) wish for a different outcome, but hats off to Cincinnati.
agreed all around … tip of the helmet to Joe Burrow and the Bengals
Hilarious is hilarious.
I’m trying to take it in stride. I’m putting on a great mask and brave face. But underneath it all, it’s all pain brother. That one hurt. But we have been there before, so I’m attempting to act like it. I don’t drink anymore and I’m totally clean and sober (no alcohol for almost two years, and this was my second full NFL season without drinking at all, wow). If I wasn’t, I might be in jail from getting so pissed about this loss…
So there’s that to be thankful for too.
indeed
This is where I am, too. Very close friend of 40+ years is a Browns fan. Since the Browns are NEVER happening, she pulls for the Bengals also. I remember how disappointed she was in 82 and 89, and I remember who great it felt to finally FINALLY get back to the SB. So I am strongly pulling for her, and it helps ease the pain some.
If it had been to the Titans, Steelers, even the Bills, I’d feel very different.
And, add to that they play for screw-them-for-life-miserable-bastard rams, it is just that much easier to root for the Bengals rather than my usual against the Pats.
