Monday Night Arrowthread: Sad and Angry Edition.
236 repliesIt’s time for the Sad and Angry Edition of your Monday Night Arrowthread. Use it to rant about the most heartbreaking Chiefs loss of this season or whatever you’d like. It’s your open thread world tonight, I’m just writing in it. Join AG to discuss…
No seriously, how bout’ those Chiefs? Did anyone check on them?
Welcome to your Monday Night Arrowhthread, Arrowhead Guys. Come on in, the depression is fine. The pillows are wet from all the Red and Gold tears. The beer is extra salty. The whiskey will literally kill you. The takes are hellishly hot. The BBQ is burnt like ends (of seasons). The cats, dogs and exotic pets are beaten beyond recognition. The children are hiding under the bed. The people within the Kansas City Chiefs organization are extra-fireable-unable-and-tradeable if you let the most pissed-off commoners of the Chiefs Kingdom tell it. Nevertheless, this is your unhappy place for the evening and your sad and angry open thread for the night. What’s the opposite of enjoy? Dislike? Despise? Let’s roll! Despise it!
We Lost!
Tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. I will wax a little poetic and give you a little MOAR perspective. It’s already written, but tonight the wounds are still a little fresh from the Bengals giving us all a new COVID variant: Cat Scratch Fever. Believe me, it’s killing me too. I am sad. I am angry. I am hurting. I’m in denial and I am not going to spend too much time tonight telling you how to feel. Our beloved Kansas City Chiefs just lost the AFC Championships and blew a 21-3 lead at Arrowhead Stadium. If you want to punch holes in the wall, kick someone down a flight of stairs and headbutt your neighbors grandparents in the dentures, I’m not gonna stop you tonight. You do you! What I am going to do is throw you a new Twitter Feed so you can see what’s going on out there and show you a few of my thoughts about this depressing situation. Let’s go!
Not depressed enough? Let’s read what the world has to say on the blue bird:
Feel any better? No. Don’t worry, I get it! Losing sucks! My thoughts…
Meh…

Trying to talk pissed-off Chiefs fanatics into sensible thoughts after the season is over due to a loss like that is a pointless exercise.
Let people be angry and throw out their hell-temp’d hot takes. They’ll be fine after NFL FA and the Draft. It’s still fresh…
Some of the most pissed people off are newer Chiefs fans, and this thought made me laugh… and smile.
This is way funnier than it has any right to be.
— W.A. Watts (@ChiefBlindersOn) January 31, 2022
First real smile since the game ended…
We love the newbies!#Chiefs! https://t.co/DlQQ2CA9uN
Nick Wright might also provide you with a smile… might.
This was the only move I had left on the chessboard. https://t.co/xMJNBJk4mx

To the Chiefs fans, from the Chiefs:
To all of Chiefs Kingdom, we know this isn’t how we wanted the season to end, but we couldn’t have made it all the way to a fourth straight AFC Championship game without your support. Truly the best fans in the world ❤️ pic.twitter.com/1oppb4o5ng

Conclusion:
Believe me, tomorrow morning I’m going to put on the Chiefs blinders tight and give you some positive perspective. Tonight, I’m not going to spend much energy telling you how to feel about your fandom. Other than the Colts-Chiefs game featuring the Andrew Luck touchdown tomahawk chopping a football down our hopes and dreams. The Lin Elliot games from the ’90s (yeah I said his name). And definitely the Super Bowl last year against the Bucs. This Bengals game is up there with the worst losses in franchise history. Having their best win in history and their worst loss in history in back-to-weeks is the most Kansas City Chiefs thing to do ever. That’s exactly the Chiefs I grew up loving, so it is familiar. Nevertheless, it’s still eerily similar to getting your ball sack stuck in an up escalator after falling down it for 13 seconds straight. Nothing but pain. Sometimes that’s life as a Chiefs fan. Ouch! This year I really thought we had a chance to win it all and it fucking hurts, but I always think we have a chance to win it all… so that’s kind of a catch-22. I’m sorry you’re hurting Chiefs fans. I’m hurting too and tomorrow I’ll give you some MOAR perspective, but tonight it’s time to rant. And as usual…

I finally bit the bullet and went through the comments, and I must say I’m surprised. While I didn’t expect torches and pitchforks, something like grumpy and irritable, I did. I will grant that I didn’t read everything, the tone was calm and polite all around.
Thank you, one and all, because keeping things polite, even cordial, when we all feel like lashing out in anger and frustration, like Mickey Rourke in a cheesy movie (sans toothpick) means a lot to me. Seriously, it fed the place I tap for the fuel to keep doing this for y’all. Finally having a little fuel left in that tank feels…strange, but not in a bad way. I’ve been running on willpower, and that’s a lean mixture. Expensive, too.
Thank you, one and all.
BRaG
fuck you very much…
…And the Bronco you rode in on.
how dare you…
Defense – Which starter had the overall worst performance for the season?
Clark, Nnadi/Reed, Jones, Ingram, Gay, Bolton, Hitch, Ward, Fenton, Sneed, Dirty Dan, Thornhill, Mathieu. More than 11 spots but tried to cover different formations.
This is much harder – many different candidates here.
Well played sir.
Considering pay Clark
Not considering pay dirty dan
Equal weight pay and performance together hitch
Offense – Which starter had the overall worst performance for the season?
Mahomes, CEH/Williams/McKinnon, Brown, Thuney, Humphrey, Smith, Wylie, Kelce, Hill, Hardman, DRob/Pringle.
I think the answer is DRob and it is not even close.
you’re amped…
imma chill a while..
also a little high
Im going with RBs. McKinnion helped but overall the RB room was disappointing this year.
We tend to agree that a receiver and a pass rusher have to be a target either in free agency or the draft. However, let us not forget the problem that we have at safety.
Look at who we have
An aging leader who seems to have crossed the peak and on the down side that we may not even sign.
A free safety who sparks on some plays but was benched for a guy that should never, ever play deep again.
A third rate player who has overperformed in his career but cannot cover and should never, ever play deep again.
A fourth safety who has been on the team for several years and only plays on the defense when someone is injured.
A fifth safety who struggles with the basic concepts of special team play and better not be considered as a potential replacement for a safety that should never, ever play deep again.
end scene…
Its a testamony to how quickly expectations become pretty unmeetable year after year. 4 straight AFCCG at home your first 4 years starting is a pretty incredible feat, to win 2 of them (should have been 3 but one idiot forgot the very first thing his very first coach taught him when he was playing peewee flag footbal—line up on this side of the line moron. Dee Ford will never be forgiven for that one. That motherfucker owes me a ring) is unprecedented, only the Eagles and Bills have ever been in 4 straight and they played some of them on the road. Had a bad half of football at the exact wrong time to have one. Shit happens. But does anybody have any doubts that the Chiefs will be right back there again next season? I dont. A few things need improvement. I think the offensive tackle play was subpar, and the DL is stupid expensive and way underperformed. But we have some serious assets. Interior OL played incredibly well and they are all babies, except Thuney and he is only 29. As OL goes he is still in the prime of his career. Creed Humphrey is a fucking monster, and he is only going to get better. Kelce hasnt shown any signs of losing a step yet, Hill is still the fastest cat in the league. Not super thrilled with the RB room, but these days backs are a dime a dozen, with better tackle play that room gets better. Hopeful we see a change in DC (Vic Fangio), we are not real anamored of Spags units overall performance. I hand a defense a 3 score lead, I expect them to be able to hold up. Melvin Ingram was a big surprise. It points to how badly the DL was doing that adding one dude made such a dramatic turnaround. Hope we keep him, Jones needs to restructure or take a hike. He aint worth what we are paying him. Frank Clark better damn well be gone. He had more offsides calls than sacks. But I have tons… Read more »
I can’t wait for you to do the undefeated season count down again.
This was great Waywerd.
Well said sir.
Go ahead and light up that victory doobie, Waywerd. I agree, we’ve got a lot of good on this team and we’ll be back in the mix in 8 months time.
This strikes me as a good song for when you’re feeling disillusioned and a little empty.
This was posted on Facebook by one Terry Lindquist Turbak, who I do not know. Reposted by Patrick’s mom. I thought it was a good summation of what we still have to be proud of in being fans of this team and this city. Sorry, it is long. I just copied and pasted here. No words or thoughts are mine. Click “read more” and hopefully it isn’t a block of text for you. (I missed the anthem. What happened?) As we recuperate from yesterday’s loss, I would like to say something about what it means to be a fan from the KC area. While others are busy bashing the Chiefs for either being too good or not being good enough, I’m sitting here filled with pride. First, Michael Irving ‘stuck a fork’ in the Chiefs around Thanksgiving and we came out with a vengeance, mounting one of the most remarkable turn-arounds I’ve ever seen, winning every single game but one for the rest of the season. We don’t give up, we don’t let analysts disrupt our determination, and we never think we can’t fix what goes wrong. We went from the bottom of the AFC West to the projected winners of the AFC Championship, and that all by itself says more about this team than anything. Second, when we won over the Bills, KC fans rushed to donate almost half a million dollars to Josh Allen’s charity as a showing of love for a great game. All those analysts who were rooting for an angry rivalry from now on between KC and Buffalo were stunned by the outpouring of generosity and good sportsmanship the entire KC community showed toward their opponent. Buffalo fans swarmed the internet complimenting the way their fans were treated not only at Arrowhead, but in the city at large. Our fans welcomed them, gave them advice on sights they should see and great places to eat, treated them with respect and wished them well. The entire NFL world was impressed by KC fans…. as they should be. Third, when there were technical difficulties for Ashanti during… Read more »
Yes Yes and Yes
Anthem had bizarre mic cut-out issues.
So how did the crowd help? Did an electrician jump out of the stands?
Just singing along. I was surprised that the author thought any fans would heckle the performer in such an instance. Felt like he was searching for another idea.
Remember, the boo Santa in Philly, so…
I could easily see other places heckling the singer
Well, that’s Philly. To even present that as an option in KC is a bit much.
It was her point
Most inspirational national anthem moment – Maurice Cheeks – whom I hated as I was a Celtics fan – joining the young girl who stumbled on the song and he cannot sing for shit. Major kudos to Cheeks.
thought it odd when the crowd sang the whole thing.
That’s crazy, I have never read that, but that’s what my article tomorrow is called, Chiefs vs. Bengals: The Agony of Defeat.
Great read.
Amen and amen.
Post june 1st I think its 19 mill at least according to over the cap
If we step back and look at the entire season without emotion, the offense struggled whenever Kelce and Hill were not dominating. There were moments – Fortson started to emerge, McKinnon in the later stages of the season, Hardman being used correctly as a third receiver on jet sweeps, CEH had a few decent games as well. We need that third offensive weapon – we are screwed if Kelce or Hill go down with injury next year.
Correct. The OL will be better next year and Creed and Smith will only improve over the next few years. Need to solve the OT issue, but adding another BIG, true X WR is imperative. Would love to pick up a hammer back late in the draft.
On paper, the big receiver is the missing component. Andy does prefer speed over size so I am worried about whom we draft.
If Fortson comes back healthy next season, that’s going to be a great weapon. He was just starting to get it. That’s a really disappointing forgotten storyline EA. We do need another weapon and we need to draft a pass rusher that isn’t a freaking long term project with high upside. Or sign one in free agency. Or trade for one. We need a guy that can get to the QB without calling a blitz and that can get a hand a QB and finish the play even if they’re covered in Vaseline and want to like Joe Burrow and Josh Allen, because we’ll be seeing those guys again in the playoffs.
Gotta get them down.
I don’t want a teams failed first round pick as the answer at pass rush either. I want a player that can get some sacks. Somehow, someway they need to figure that out.

The teams that can dominate a game are the ones that can rush the passer with the front four. We can go undefeated if we get that pass rush and one good receiver.
I love our two young linebackers. They’re only going to get better.
We need at least one more – Niemann moves up in the rotation if Hitch is released.
I know, but those two are exciting players. Bolton may be one of the best players in the NFL next season. Niemann is going to be a free agent and Hitch will almost assuredly be released. LB’s available in FA:
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/linebacker/all/
Maybe we can kidnap Luke Kuechly and just have him wake up in the Chiefs locker room until he signs a deal. Ha… that’d be a good movie plot if NFL licensing wasn’t an issue.
Saw some of Bolton’s family on the concourse yesterday. Bolton/Gay are going to be good for years.
Probably gonna need at least one CB and likely two safeties if Mathieu is gone.
I wonder what the market for Ward will be.
Yeah, I think I’d try to pre-empt that as much as possible.
There isn’t much in free agency and Ingram is going to cost a lot to keep alone. It almost has to be the draft.
https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/defensive-end/
Two late round EDGE guys who could be diamonds in the rough are Boye Mafe from Minnesota and Isaiah Thomas from Oklahoma. There are some truly good rushers early, but I think these guys could be very helpful in the pass rush area. Thomas is pretty solid vs the run as well, he played inside too much this year and thus has a lack of stats which is hurting his draft position.
Thomas has some great size.
TWSS
Bitches love Thomas.
Signed a 4 mill contract last year. 33 years old. Maybe 6 mill next year?
Looks like he still has some juice – would go as high as 8 million to keep him.
Point blank – we lost the game. Had we lost to Buffalo, then Josh Allen won the game. Our game against the Bengals had a multitude of errors by many.
Definitely a Chiefs loss more than a Bengals win.
It’s not common that the three of us agree on something. Now’s one of those times.
If Bengals win, expect to be in Cincinnati on Thursday night for the opener
I’ll take this season over any Herm, Haley or Crennel season. I know that there were more before that, but I was too young and didn’t start following the Chiefs until Montana arrived.
I think in the big picture all of us would. I know I would as well. The frustrating part is this team SHOULD have won another SB and just, inexplicably, forgot how to play football when it really mattered.
This game had shades of the 2018 AFCC Patriot game to me.
Except we flipped the halves. Heck, we didn’t even get 3 in that game
True. I guess it had the same heartbreaking results. Except it was fucking Brady. Fuck that guy.
stared in ’89, Marty and DT
Len Dawson era for me.
many gaps between good/acceptable QBs
Me too
Me too!
I’ve dropped an article and said a few things, but until my psychology’s settled down, I likely won’t be saying much.
Besides, I know the drill: We lost that game because of Spags and Sorensen, all we need to do is replace them with folks who are just marginally competent at their jobs, and the D would have scored more points, as their job description expects them to do.
be good man ?
I don’t know how, man. And where’s Dave?
Dave is in L.A. for the superbowl
*too soon
I know, I’m just trying to cope and stay positive. I don’t feel like smashing anything and having to replace it. With that said, fuck the Bengals and the Rams.
sarcasm is difficult in text ?
Damn man no need to attack my font
the Helvetica you talking about?
i actually laughed out loud at this
?
That’s all we can do at this point. Glad I could somehow help.
“Dave’s Not Here, Man … ” … ; )
Where the hell is Dave?
And if you don’t like that last comment about the D, then you know why I’m going to try to stay under the radar. I don’t want or need people telling me I’m an insufferable know-it-all, just for having an opinion.
but you are our “insufferable know-it-all,”
Say hi to the Mrs for me.
peace
We love you BRaG. Wish you well.
To those of us who are left…mostly.
But on things that I have made a specific study over the course of years, and dug into source materials, it just so happens that I do know more than those who just keep up with the mainstream news. Maybe it’s simply the fact that I do know more that pisses people off, but what am I supposed to do, play dumb for the comfort of those who don’t put in the work I have?
IANAL, but c’mon, if you don’t read any Circuit court decisions, as I do on occasion (At least one in the last 7 days, but I’m pretty sure I browsed at least one more)…
Make your point and move on (I know…Iknow).
Mockery is not your style….
also the issues raised can inform your readings
I think it was more on Patrick Mahomes in the second half. But the game plan on that last drive was a tough one, because if we hurry up and score, we leave the Bengals too much time and let them score. I think the Bills game had our coaching staff over thinking it and we were gun shy. If we didn’t try and burn clock and scored that touchdown and trusted our defense the game may have never went to overtime. There’s a lof of IF’s though.
We’ll talk about some of those tomorrow.
I think we’re all a little mental after this game BRaG. Best wishes brother.
That last drive was just a complete debacle. Mahomes and Hardman had runs where they went out of bounds three times on that drive. Stay in bounds and TOs get called. Cannot believe the ball was not run at all with 1st and goal from the 4.
It didn’t seem like they learned anything from the drive that ended the first half and just thought they could run out the clock and score at will. That’s great confidence, but not the best game plan. If we don’t recover that Mahomes fumble that would have been even more embarrassing than the OT loss, if that’s even possible.
It was maddening that they were getting out of bounds too, I agree. Butker was nails though, I was so happy when he hit that field goal and we won the coin toss and then, well, we all watched OT… sigh. Just brutal.
Anyway you slice it.
OT – Let’s put in DRob plan.
Obviously the best option, to be sure. God forbid McKinnon should get a few touches.
Mahomes gets the brunt of the criticism as he is our leader and best player. He was running for his life – not going to fault him for running out of bounds as he was fighting to gain some yards. I am confused why we chose not to run either. The play calls set up the scenario of the final drive debacle.
They didn’t really have an answer for McKinnon, we should of called his number on a couple sweeps.
Yes. That off tackle stuff was money with him. Should have been runs on first and second down. I just can’t believe we’re talking about this. LOL
Before the end of the first half, I would have thought someone was freaking nuts to even suggest we’d be having this talk. I thought we were going to the Super Bowl, then they stuffed Hill at the goal line and we left into the locker room empty handed and we just fucking lost the game. Fuck. It sucks.
The Bengals just wanted it more though, and that bothers me because the Chiefs should have been hungry as fuck after last years Super Bowl loss.
I feel like finding a nice person and pushing them down an elevator shaft. But I won’t.
That rotation was fine – CEH spelling McKinnon with the bulk of the carries. We did need to run more.
This is a pretty facetious question, but would you have preferred this loss to the Bengals (as is) or beating them, making it to the Super Bowl and losing to the Rams?
I think I’d rather have made it to the Super Bowl and lost, if we had to lose a game. But man losing another Super Bowl would’ve been freaking tough too. This Bengals loss is so painful though, we had it, we freaking had it and just let it slip through our fingers. Every time I think I’m doing better, I think about it and it’s just pain. My goodness.
I would have preferred to advance.
Ditto
Honestly, if those are my choices, I’m good.
The participants of these two games will be a trivia question in a few years. Back-to-back SB loses would be a stink you’d wear forever.
That too. We’d be up there with nineties Bills. Right now I think were more on par with the ’90s Braves World Series teams. Must be the Tomahawk Chop.
I know that we are not in the mood but perhaps this will bring us out of our funk – and provide us with a common enemy (me) to take out our frustration on. Here is the first twelve entrants – The MVC (Most Valuable Chief) in Franchise history. This is based solely on statistics – my personal opinion is much different.
109 – Anthony Hitchens
110 – Dontari Poe
111 – Gary Barbaro
112 – Andrew Wylie
113 – Chuck Hurston
114 – Todd McNair
115 – Willie Davis
116 – Willie Roaf
117 – Frank Zombo
118 – Brad Budde
119 – Dante Hall
120 – Derrick Nnadi
Needless to say, length of time on the team makes a huge difference. Not ranking the best players – Roaf would not be # 116. One of my favorites – Christian Okoye came in at # 125.
Which stats?
i.e. franchise stats, or league standings for the years played.
Combination with how they were ranked with others playing the same position as well as how they were ranked against all teammates. Then points were assigned for regular season performance as well as playoff success.
So Mahomes was ranked against Dawson, Green, Montana, Elvis, Cassel et al for his career and then ranked against Kelce, Hill, CEH for each season. Eras with lower regular season success hurt those players and such.
Players who played only a few seasons are not on the list as they did not accumulate enough points to appear on the list against lower skill players with longer careers.
ok, my only other quibble would be a minimum # of starts/snaps.
Have at it.
Zombo sighting.
don’t let him bite you…
Pompano, don’t be so frank.
fine, I’m a weiner…
Trying desperately to be a hot dog.
Sandwich’d.
Just so long as you don’t Ketchup … ; )
Any list which rates Hitchens above Dante Hall is a farce…unless the BIGGER the number the better. But then Nnadi would be above Hall and that is even worse.
As I said, this has nothing to do with whom is the better player.
I still don’t understand how any statistical comparison could be made which would determine Hitchens to be more valuable than Hall.
To be fair, Hall – who was a fantastic returner – was a back up receiver for most of his career.
I would love to have a best Chiefs ever tournament after I finish posting this particular list.
I’d pick Hall over Hitchens 100 times out a 100. He was a game changer.
That is the limitation of statistics. I agree that Hall was the better overall Chief.
I think Hitchens has been a great player at times and an awful player MOAR times (like Sorensen), but I think like with Watkins and Clark he made way too much $$$ for what we were getting.
Great take – He received star money and has been average.
Dante Hall was dynamic though and changed the way special teams were played in his time. Props to Gary Stills too.
Who would you rather have as a special teamer, Gary Stills or Anthony Sherman?
I’m taking Stills.
Gary Stills – # 162 one spot ahead of JT Smith.
On the bright side, mission accomplished. This gives us a brief moment of being able to forget the sad outcome on Sunday. More surprise players coming up on the list so I expect to have my ass handed to me time and time again.
