Tough loss, not just the result but also the injuries.
For the first time in seemingly forever the game wasn’t being announced by Mitch Holthus, but the show must go on with Green Bay getting the ball to start the game. They started the game with a nice drive. The first play was a 9 yard “pass” that was really a run, then a couple plays later crossed midfield with a 19 yard pass to Christian Watson. The Packers then continued to move the ball, including a play where Drue Tranquill suffered a nasty concussion, eventually setting up a 1st and goal on the 7. The first play of the series got to the 1, then on a play action that fooled everyone Love found tight end Ben Sims for the wide open touchdown to take an early 7-0 lead.
The Chiefs responded with a nice drive of their own on their first attempt. It started with a string of good plays; a 9 yard swing pass to Rice, then Pacheco powering his way for 8 then catching a checkdown for 7. Then after a 1 yard checkdown to set up 3rd and 2, CEH picked it up with a 5 yard run. A couple plays later a Kelce catch got called back on an OPI, but after a 9 yard Mahomes scramble he bought time before finding MVS for 16 on a 3rd and 11. Pacheco followed it up with a huge 27 yard run to set up 1st and goal. But a couple sacks forced a field goal attempt, and it was 7-3 at the end of a quick 1st quarter.
Both offenses burned time in the 1st quarter, so the Packers opened up the 2nd quarter starting their 2nd drive, and it was another good one. It also started with a bang with Love completing a 19 yard pass off of play action, then a couple plays later found Wicks for another 27 yards. After moving the ball a bit more they faced a 3rd and 5 inside the 10, and Love stepped up in the pocket to find a wide open Christian Watson in the middle of the endzone to make it 14-3
Like the Packers, the Chiefs 2nd drive was an echo of their 1st. They faced a quick 3rd and 4, but Mahomes found Skyy for 5 to pick it up. Two plays later Mahomes found Kelce over the middle who ran to pick up 23 yards. A couple plays later they faced a 3rd and inches, this time it was Pacheco who picked it up easily with an 8 yard run. Mahomes barely missed Rice on a slant, but then Kelce took a screen for 10 yards to the 12 yard line. Two plays later Mahomes took a hard hit on a scramble that would have picked up the 1st, but Creed Humphrey got called for a hold and on the ensuing 3rd and 11 Mahomes took another redzone sack to force another field goal, making it 14-6.
The Packers started their 3rd drive with 2:14 left in the half and only having 1 timeout. Their fear of Mahomes seemingly made them lose their confidence in Love, as they consistently ran the ball and wasted clock. But after Love found Watson thanks to a defender slipping, then a couple plays later Patrick Taylor running for 24 yards, they were suddenly in field goal range with 32 seconds left still owning their timeout. The Chiefs took a timeout for some reason, but it seemed to settled down the defense as the Packers committed a false start then forced back-to-back incompletions, and on 3rd and 15 lost 2 yards on an inside pitch. The 56 yard field goal attempt was too scary for the Packers, so they punted instead, pinning the Chiefs on the 1 with 9 seconds left. The Chiefs ran out the clock, and that was the first half.
The Chiefs got the ball to start the 2nd half, but it wasn’t as good as the 1st half drives as, after a nice play design to create a 21 yard pass to Kelce, back-to-back penalties set the Chiefs back to 1st and 25. Andy Reid apparently wasn’t in the game as he inexplicably called a run on the next play (where Pacheco got shaken up), then called a screen to Rice to set up a 3rd and 18. Mahomes was in the game though as he bought time before doing a weird skip pass to Kelce for 27 yards and picked up the 1st down. The next play Pacheco came back in and looked perfectly fine as he bulldozed his way for 11. The next play was another quick pass to Rice in the backfield for 13 yards to get down to the 11. Then another powerful run by Pacheco and a tough run on a screen by Rice set up a 1st and 1, then Pacheco found the endzone on the next play. He couldn’t fins the endzone as the Packers played the next run well, and it was 14-12.
The Packers remained hot on their first drive of the 2nd half, although it wasn’t easy. The first play Leo Chenal missed a tackle to allow AJ Dillon to pick up 14. But the worst part was Bryan Cook suffering a brutal leg injury that NBC wouldn’t even show again. A couple plays later after Sneed made a nice tackle it was 3rd and 8, and after Love found Jayden Reed for 7 it was 4th and 1. Pressure finally got to Love who tossed up a prayer, which was unfortunately answered as Romeo Dobbs came down with it for a 33 yard game. A couple plays later Love placed a nice pass to Christian Watson where only he could get it and made the game 21-12.
The Chiefs next drive started with good field position after a nice return by Richie James. Pacheco got the ball on the first 2 plays and picked up a combined 12 yards. Then Mahomes found Richie James who spun through a tackle to pick up 12. A couple short gains later Pacheco took a direct snap, then handed it to Toney who gained a flashy 6 yards. After another 8 yard run by Pacheco he had a 13 yard run where seemingly the entire offense pushed him down to the 1 yard line. A run that lost a yard later and the Chiefs took a 2nd and goal into the final quarter.
The final quarter started with a rare shovel pass fail that was dangerously batted up but ultimately fell harmlessly to the ground. But on 3rd down Mahomes found Noah Gray right over the goal line to bring the game to 21-19.
The Packers got a bit lucky on their next drive, as the 2nd play say Love get a favorable spot on a scramble that should have created a 3rd and inches. But afterwards he found Watson a couple times to continue moving the ball. But they faced a tough 3rd and 15 after a delay of game and back-to-back incompletions forced by the Chiefs pass rush, and on the play he overthrew a well-covered Jayden Reed and they were forced to punt.
The Chiefs finally had a chance to take the lead, but instead suffered the first 3-and-out in the game as Mahomes missed MVS deep on what looked like a miscommunication then Richie James believed the next incompletion was because he was interfered with on 3rd down. The Packers did better, as a couple plays into the drive Love found a Romeo Dobbs who was wide open after Gay and Sneed couldn’t agree on who should cover him and ended up giving up 27 yards. They then ran a double reverse to Watson who shook Sneed and picked up 13. They continued to march down the field, thanks to a 10 yard run by Dillon and a 15 yard completion to Heath off play action. The drive finally stalled in the redzone as a screen was busted by the D, pressure forced Love to throw it away, and Mike Danna got the sack on 3rd and 10. The Packers were forced to kick the field goal, and it was 24-19.
The offense again had a chance to take the lead as they got the ball with 6:03 left in the game. It started hot, as Mahomes made a spectacular play tossing a wobbler as he was being tackled to Rice to pick up 9. Then he overthrew Rice, but the refs said he was interfered with and gave the Chiefs the 17 yards anyway. It was admittedly a questionable call, but it didn’t matter as the next play Mahomes was looking for Moore but instead found Nixon who plays for the Packers and Green Bay got the ball back.
The Packers were now in clock bleeding mode, as they picked up a quick first down on a short pass and a run. A couple plays later it was 3rd and 1, and they did the tush push successfully to pick up the 1st. A couple plays later it was another reverse to Watson who smartly went down in bounds after picking up the 1st, but unfortunately did it awkwardly and injured himself. A couple more runs saw a 3rd and 6 after the 2 minute warning. They put the ball in Love’s hands but he couldn’t find anybody and ultimately accepted a sack by Chris Jones. They made the 48 yard kick and it was 27-19
The Chiefs had 1:09 and no timeouts needing a touchdown and a 2 point conversion just to go to overtime. The first play Mahomes checkdown to Pacheco was tipped and fell incomplete. The next play Mahomes scrambled to the sideline and took a huge hit, which was in bounds but they called unnecessary roughness anyway. The very next play Rice caught a ball with his fingertips and fought for the first down (initially called a fumble but overturned on review), but an unnecessary roughness on Pacheco after he threw a punch took it back 15 yards (he was also disqualified). The next play was a deep pass to MVS that should have called interference but wasn’t. Then found CEH and MVS back-to-back, the latter being yet another bad call by the refs by not winding the clock. A couple incompletions later it was time for a hail mary, which couldn’t be caught and the Chiefs lost.
