Game Summary

1st Quarter

The Broncos got the ball first and three plays later they were forced to punt, as Lock showed why he was replaced after missing a wide open receiver down the field. A nice punt backed the Chiefs up to the 9 to start their first drive, but it didn’t matter as Mahomes methodically moved the offense down the field for nearly 8 minutes of game time for a touchdown to Kelce, making it 7-0 Chiefs.

The Broncos offense didn’t look any better on their next drive as they only gained 2 yards before punting, but a roughing the punter penalty by the goat of last week Zayne Anderson gave the Broncos their first 1st down of the game. The Broncos then managed to actually earn a couple 1st downs themselves, including Lock finally getting a completion on 3rd down after his first 5 attempts went incomplete and Cortland Suttom throwing for 16 yards, Lock then ran it in to tie up the game at 7.

2nd Quarter

The 2nd drive of the game for Kansas City started in the 2nd quarter, and Nick Chubb decided to give the Chiefs a free 15 yards by needlessly smacking Mahomes in the face. But after a long sack when Thuney fell down the Chiefs were forced to punt.

Denver started their next drive with a huge run by Melvin Gordan that got the ball to midfield. After Drew Lock shockingly completed a pass in the middle of the field to pick up a 1st down on 2nd and 7, he then converted a 3rd and 7 on the ground on a long touchdown run to give the Broncos a 14-7 lead.

On the next drive the Chiefs continued to be methodical on offense, including a wildcat run by Hardman and a nice throw across the field by Mahomes, but a hold by Creed Humphrey as they were just a couple yars away from the endzone was too much to overcome and the Chiefs brought it to a 14-10 score.

The Broncos got the ball back with 2:18 on the clock and 3 timeouts, plenty of time for most teams to think they’d like to try and get some points. But Denver feared Mahomes more than they trusted Lock (which, fair enough) so despite moving the ball a little they chose to let the clock run rather than use their timeouts, so they punted and gave the Chiefs the ball with 23 seconds left. The Chiefs tried a little bit, but it just wasn’t enough time so halftime arrived without another score.

3rd Quarter

The Chiefs got the ball to start the half and, after continuing the methodical plays Mahomes got inspired by Lock and busted out a huge 25 yard run to get deep into Denver territory. Then a couple plays later Jerick McKinnon had a great run after a checkdown to spin and power his way into the endzone to give the Chiefs the 17-14 lead.

The defense had a nice first couple of plays, but Drew Lock actually made a nice throw to suddenly get into Kansas City territory, then Melvin Gordon finished off the drive with another huge run and the Broncos retook the lead 21-17.

For the first time all day the game suddenly seemed to have some energy. The Chiefs continued their methodical ways, but a play where multiple receivers slipped and a drop by Josh Gordon led to a punt that the math says should have been a 4th down try.

The defense finally woke up, as the Broncos moved backwards before a poor punt gave the Chiefs excellent field position on their own 43 yard line. An unusual illegal pass by Mahomes past the line of scrimmage then a hold created a 2nd and 24, but a big play to Pringle set up a 4th and 1, and the Chiefs converted on the same play to Hill that closed out the playoff game against the Browns. The 3rd quarter ended with the ball on the Denver 32.

4th Quarter

The 4th quarter started with a couple of incompletions, so out came Butker to make it 21-20.

The Broncos responded with a slow methodical drive of their own, actually managing to pick up a couple crucial 3rd downs on Drew Lock throws. And just as the defense looked like they were going to give up an embarrassing touchdown, Melvin Ingram destroys Melvin Gordan, frocing the fumble which Nick Bolton returned all the way for a touchdown. A 2 point conversion later and it was suddenly 28-21 Chiefs.

Now it was up to Drew Lock to lead the comeback late, and he actually answered with an immediate big play to get the Broncos into Kansas City territory, then a couple plays later made another big play on 3rd down by throwing it up to Juedy on an all out blitz. But the defense did hold, and the Broncos settled for a field goal deep in Chiefs territory to make it 28-24 Chiefs.

The Chiefs got the ball back with 4:37 left on the clock, and importantly the Broncos having 2 timeouts. Time for a lond slow drive to burn the clock? No! A quick pass to Hardman took it immediately to the Broncos 31. A couple runs later Mahomes picked up a huge 3rd down on a throw to Kelce that ended the game, Chiefs win!

Hey guys! Great win!

So, in honor of beating the Denver Broncos 13 times in a row, I have a special game-day poem. In it, I give a very brief comment on all of the victories in this 13-game series, and then give a few more poetic comments on today’s win. I present: “Baker’s Dozen.”

Please read, rate, comment on the link, and share. And as always, GO CHIEFS!

Two plays caught my eye: Gordon’s drop by the right sideline in the second half, all he had to do was move one or two steps towards the ball, the defender made a good but not great play, that’s how Gordon will not get targets; second, on Lock’s second rushing TD it appeared Sneed pulled up even though he also appeared to have a real shot at popping Lock on the one yard line (and maybe even jar the ball loose), one of the half-time talkers mentioned it, so I’m wondering if that was a respect thing towards the opposing QB cause it seemed to me at the time that Sneed should have launched himself at Lock.

Do not become a Chiefs fan if you have cardiac problems or night tremors, or a family history of such things.
Be sure to ask your doctor if your heart is healthy enough for Chiefs fandom.

Any news on Williams? Looked like he went down on the last play of the 1st half, and was never in for the 2nd.

I had the privilege of seeing Prince perform, one of the best concerts I’ve attended.

the O looked mostly decent … the D was SleepWalking, or more like SleepStumbling …

a week to “get it fixed” (although possible just going “vanilla” and trying different things w/o really caring TOO much about outcome) … for sure though: if the D plays anything like “this” next week, the Chiefs will likely be “one and done”

I had a feeling the Chiefs would put themselves in a position to win the game, but not that way (although Ingram had blown up at least one other play in the same fashion earlier).
