The Path to the Super Bowl

The last rooting rankings of the season! After this week it doesn’t really make sense to talk about rooting for other teams since it’s narrowed down so much, but as the playoffs begin it’s fun to look at the possible opponents and start thinking about what we’d like.

To me the most favorable path is obvious. So obvious that, not only was I not the first to think of it, but people were talking about it before the standings were even finalized.

Now Buffalo did win so it’s not quite identical, but if the Raiders and Patriots both win, the Patriots will go to Nashville and the Raiders will come to Kansas City. I know we’re all loathe to root for the Raiders but the reality is that they’d be far and away the most favorable Divisional opponent for the Chiefs. And we’d need the Patriots to win otherwise the Titans would be the ones to get the Raiders and we’d get Buffalo.

After that again New England is about the most favorable matchup we could hop for in the AFC Championship. But really we just want the Titans to lose to whoever they face so we can host it at Arrowhead.

Ideal Super Bowl Opponent?

Looking at the NFC and a potential Super Bowl opponent if we get there, I was hoping for the Lions but it looks like that’s not going to happen. Of the teams that actually made the playoffs, it’s hard to argue against the Eagles being the worst of the bunch. If we could find a way to get an Andy Reid Revenge Bowl going that would be ideal.

and The All-Pro Center is … (envelope, please!) … from the Philadelphia Eagles, please welcome Mr Jason Kelce!

wrong guy, but at least it’s staying “in family” (whatever, I guess)

wanting the least favorable matchup is poor sportsmanship (joking, but only sort of) … if you want to BE the best you have to BEAT the best

now, that said … thoughts of the Pats and Raiders winning and being still in this dance in a couple of weeks means someone’s hallucinating (too much Bert’s? yup, that’d do it!) … besides, statistics can be so misleading, and if if the so-called “weaker” teams are winning and still standing at the end, are they REALLY the weaker teams? moreover, what does that say about your (our) original assessment about which team would be “most favorable” to play? (see the conundrum here?)

So when university of maryland baltimore county beat the number 1 seed uva, kstate should have been shaking in their boots because umbc was now basically a number one seed.

I say to be the best you have to beat whoever you play. Nobody would have cared if Tom Brady had finished off his 19-0 season against Eli instead of a good qb.
