I have a Chiefs poem for you, below. Since it’s a short one, I thought I would share my secrets of how I write an epic Chiefs’ song parody.

First, I need a song. I do collect classic rock songs on a playlist. But I also listen to the radio. As the song plays, I sometimes go over in my mind how it might be used as a Chiefs’ song. Hit and miss. But I will hear a song sometimes, and already have a potential rhyme started. Those, I write down when I get a chance, save them, and have something to work with, even if it’s down the line. Some songs work for only certain occasions (such as if the rhyme needs a one syllable team like the Bears).

When I sit down to write, I have two tools I use. The first is the song lyrics. I have to make my Chiefs’ poem follow the rhythm and the flow of the original. Since every good poem takes a journey, a Chiefs’ song parody must as well. The end of the journey is, of course, a Chiefs’ victory (or at least hopefulness that we get one).

The second tool I use is a good rhyming dictionary. RhymeZone online is a great help. It also comes with a thesaurus which is equally handy.

After I’ve written, I save it, post it here and then post it on Twitter. I have a small readership, but I always tag at least one current Chief, one former Chiefs’ player and someone in sports (usually Chiefs) media. As well as to anyone who wants it.

And that’s how I do it! Now to the (short) poem. Since the poem was short this week, what better way to fill the needed space for a fanpost than by showing you what happens behind the curtains?

Patty break, Patty break
Baker man.
Break down the Bucs
As hard as you can.
Throw it and run it
And mark it with a “V”.
Put it in the standings
For a Chiefs’ victory!
