How the Eagles used the draft 2021-2024
0 repliesI wanted to go back and look at the recent draft history of the Philadelphia Eagles. Their successful drafting dates back to at least the 2021 draft. They’d had a wretched regular season record of 4-11-1 in the 2020 season and that gave them the 6th pick of the 1st round. They then traded down and then back up with the result that they drafted Devonta Smith at number 10, plus picking up a 2022 1st round pick. They also traded Carson Wentz to Indianapolis for a 2022 first round pick, meaning they went into the 2022 draft with 3 first round picks.
And they weren’t just any picks. Trade partners MIA and IND each had mediocre seasons in 2021 as did the Eagles who went 9-8 and lost in the Wildcard round to Tampa. That left the Eagles with the 15th, 16th and 19th overall picks.
It gets pretty messy after that but the gist of it is that they used 6 1st-round picks over four years to get Devonta Smith, Jordan Davis, A.J. Brown (in trade), Jalen Carter, Nolan Smith and Quinyon Mitchell. They also used lower round picks acquired as parts of the deals they made to move up and grab Cooper DeJean.
Essentially, they had a terrible season and a couple of so-so seasons to get very valuable 1st-round picks and then parlayed that into better, future 1st-round picks by trading with desperate or poorly-run franchises (e.g. MIA, IND, NO). The bloody details below.

Had three 1st round picks going into the draft, their own 19th, 15th acquired from MIA in 2021, and the 16th pick acquired from IND for Carson Wentz. So 15,16,19 picks.
