The defense struggles again, but ain’t no thang for Mahomes.
The Chiefs started the game with the ball, and despite Mahomes being a bit inconsistent some Buffalo penalties and some nice runs kept the drive alive. But a drop by Hill on 3rd and 12 lead to a field goal after the Chiefs burned almost half of the 1st quarter. The Bills responded with a much quicker drive down the field with a couple big plays, including a couple runs from Josh Allen, that lead to a touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff Pringle fumbled the return, but the Chiefs defense held (or rather the Bills self destructed with penalties) and the Bills were somehow forced to punt, so all of that for pretty much nothing.
So anyway the Chiefs get the ball and this drive had Josh Gordon’s first catch as a Chief off a great thrown from Mahomes while escaping the pocket. They got down to the goal line, where they ran another “We’Re So CoNfUsEd” play for the touchdown. The Bills responded with a very Chiefs-like deep bomb for the touchdown. The Bills shockingly forced a 3-and-out, and the Chiefs defense less shockingly gave up a big play on 3rd-and-8 that turned what should have been a 3-and-out into a redzone trip. But the defense managed to hold and only give up a field goal.
The Bills kicked the kickoff out of bounds, giving the Chiefs the ball on the 40 yard line with 3 minutes left in the half. Mahomes had a big run after the Bills completely vacated the middle of the field, but a couple incompletions and a false start forced a 3rd-and-long, and despite getting it to a 4th-and-5 failed the 4th down conversion. The Bills took advantage of the good field position to score yet another touchdown on yet another deep pass.
The Chiefs had an opportunity at a a 1 minute drive. After a big play down the field to Hardman (which required a review after the refs initially ruled him out of bounds) the refs made an honestly terrible offensive pass interference on Gordon which took away all hope for a touchdown, but Butker drilled a tough long field goal to make it 24-13 at half.
After a not-so-brief rain delay the Bills got the ball to start the 2nd half.
And things went downhill from there. While the defense deserves a fair share of the blame, the offense was just…off. Their sense of being in control of the game was lacking, and it’s obvious. They haven’t lost faith, but something’s wrong, somehow.
By the time the 4th Quarter rolled around, it became obvious there’s an elephant in the room, and it’s time to point out that his INT count’s already about a career high. They all played hard, right to the end, but they for some reason just couldn’t make it click, and keep it there. Tony wrote the 1st half, I’m filling in on the 2nd because he’s exhausted. You don’t rob an insomniac of sleep opportunities.
And here’s where I close it out. When the botched snap exchange happened, I clicked it off. The coming week’s going to be bad enough, why add to the grief?
There are plenty of things to complain about, so here’s your chance.
