A recap of Super Bowl LV between the Chiefs and Bucs

Game Summary

Your Kansas City Chiefs won the coin toss and elected to defer looking to set the tempo on defense right away, and they did with a three and out. Patrick Mahomes looked deep early, but two missed strikes downfield to Mecole Hardman forced an eventual punt. The rare early-game sack by Frank Clark forced the Bucs to punt it a whopping 33 yards setting the Chiefs up with good field position that they turned into a 49 yard Harrison Butker field goal. Thanks to a holding penalty on Bashaud Breeland, the Bucs were able to extend their drive resulting in the ever-disgusting Brady-to-Gronkowski touchdown.

The second quarter opened with the Chiefs going three and out, followed by a 27 yard punt and a personal foul penalty on Chris Jones shortly after, setting the Bucs up at midfield. A deep strike to Mike Evans put them at the 6 but after four downs later the defense held for a turnover on downs. Another failed Hardman target ended the drive and penalty on a perfect punt forced a second which was another dud, this time for 29 yards out of the endzone. A million penalties led the Bucs right into the endzone to go up 14-3. The Chiefs offense sprung to life on the following drive, but pressure by the Tampa front won out and Kansas City settled for another Butker field goal. An ill-advised timeout on 3rd down did Tampa a favor, but not as big of a favor as the refs, who escorted the Bucs down field and into the endzone with a series of Pass Interference penalties on uncatchable passes, amongst other flags thrown. The Chiefs went into the locker room down 21-6

The Chiefs opened the second half with a 52 yard field goal after footing issues from Hardman and Kelce stalled what looked to be a promising drive. To keep true to the game the Bucs answered with a touchdown. Feeling the pressure to make magic, Mahomes had a pass deep to Hill deflected at the last moment and intercepted, making a comeback seem ever so unlikely. The Bucs turned the INT into three.

After that? Mostly just Patrick Mahomes running for his life, making incredible plays just to get the ball out, only to be let down over an over by his teammates. I can’t write any more about this.

See you next year, Refs.

The Chiefs do have to answer the question – who do we count on when Hill and Kelce are limited in a game.

I was hoping Sammy was more healthy than he was. But there needed to be more of an emphasis to get Pringle, Hardman, CEH, and even Robinson the ball early in the game.

I would favor adding a good tight end – there could be some out there in free agency. That would add a new wrinkle to our offense. CEH and Damian Williams are doable with an upgrade on the line but would not be adverse to adding a power back to the mix. Lots of respect for what Darrel Williams has done but he is not a true power back. None of the receivers that you mentioned have demonstrated consistency this year so perhaps we search for a speedy receiver in the draft or break a pattern and add a tall possession receiver to give teams more to think about.

Not sure Reid has any use for a big-bodied WR, he seems to like the speed and versatility. Damien Williams might be back next year as well. I think they like Keizer as a #2 TE. He may come around yet.

Mahomes could play catch with a big receiver and would force teams to move up some coverage. Andy does prefer his speedy receivers as you said. Hope I am still alive when Keizer plays like a number two tight end. I remember when Gronk and Aaron Hernandez were unstoppable. Give Kelce a decent # 2 and more instant offense.

I think the real issue is getting under the cap next season. We had $177 this year in cap space and the cap is going down next year. Changes are a’comin’ and I don’t think I’m going to like them all.

Money saved if we let Fish and Schwart go but we better have a plan in place to replace them. No more Sammy money unless we get a HUGE discount. Do we move on from Dirty Dan – love his attitude but he can definitely suck in coverage. LDT being cut saves money but how many lineman can you let go. Does Hitch have one year left on his contract and can we move on without him?

Hitch probably stays and/or gets reworked.
Dan could be back at a discount bc they really like him.
LDT being cut does save money, but Reid probably doesn’t want 5 completely new guys. LDT seems safe.
Sammy may come back at another discount, but we’re really tight under that cap.
I think the only way Schwartz is gone is retirement. His decision, so we’ll just have to see.
Fish won’t play next year IMO.

I don’t know if I’d want to blow a bunch on a center with the current cap situation. Okung is a weird dude who might just take a pay cut to play for a SB. I’d snap him up if he were interested at LT.

Okung would cost more than Peters who you suggested earlier. Either case, the plan would be to develop Niang at right tackle and possibly move him to left tackle the following year. Okung and Peters would both be injury concerns but, with our salary cap situation, might be the best we could find. If they really believe in Niang, he could be left tackle and we sign a right tackle – cost less money that way.

Goodell was at the game. He must have been either bored or sweating bullets because he put in a call to the refs at half to cut back on the laundry. I feel bad for the female official. EAFOX
02/07/2021 11:53 pm

Offensive line in the future – Fisher is down and out for most if not all of next year and Schwartz is a huge question mark. Both are big cap numbers – Could we extend Fish to help with the cap and let Schwartz walk? Niang becomes our starting left tackle since I do not think we have the money to sign any big name there cause that runs into some serious money. Remmers would be a good keep for a swing tackle and perhaps you give Rankin an opportunity at right tackle. We have to sign a tackle for some competition here. Never let Wylie play tackle again. Allegretti performed well – can Osemele come back and is he still under contract? If so, the two of them combined with LDT make a decent trio. Wylie or Wis can stay to add some depth. We need a center and we should draft one to play from day one. The right choice here solidifies the interior line. Reiter has done okay for a third stringer who was handed the job but he is limited and Kilgore is not the answer. If a second decent lineman is available in the draft, I have no problem with the Chiefs investing in this position.

Fat chance Fish is able to play next season. Last season of contract with little dead money, he’s probably gone.
Schwartz is probably done, just my guess.
KO was on a 1 year deal and both knees blew out on a big man. Doubt he’s back.
Niang was a RT in college (and a damn good one).

If I had to guess next season’s starters:
LT – 2nd round pick (maybe Jason Peter’s on the cheap?)
LG – Allegretti (I don’t have good feelings about it)
OC – FA (cheap side vet)
RG – LDT
RT – Niang
6th man – Rankin

I would not mind taking a look at Peters on the cheap. I think Allegretti has been our best lineman after Fisher. Would be all for finding a cheap veteran at center – prefer finding one in the draft. LDT is decent but not as good as we remember. Niang is the right tackle if we find a short term left tackle. If you extend Fish, lower his number for this year and ride out the injury, he could be back for two more seasons or so. Osemele is a long shot but would do another one year deal but have a back up plan ready to go cause he did make a difference. Would be a roll of the dice if Schwartz returns. If Rankin is so good, why the hell did he not play at right tackle in this game. Remmers, in my opinion, is more valuable.

I like Remmers a lot. He’s much older than Rankin and less athletic. Rankin was also coming off a tough injury for a big guy. Reid was never going to give him solid pt if his hand wasn’t forced. Reid never likes to rock the boat or change things with regards to OL.

Remmers earned a B grade for the season. He is near the end but would love to see him stay. Rankin may never be ready to take a starting job – his injury definitely derailed his career. I understand that continuity with linemen is huge and for the most part Andy is correct to leave the line alone but today was not one of those days.

The chart you posted is so telling of their performance. Aaron Rodgers – the man closest to Mahomes in ability – look at his performance against the Bucs when down – almost lackadaisical. Russell Wilson might match SOME of the scrambling that Mahomes pulled of but certainly not some of the throws. Brady would have been destroyed.

I want the replay of Mahomes parallel to the ground, throwing the ball to the end zone, after a long scramble, and hitting a receiver, with an unfortunate pass break up, where absolutely not holding took place by Tampa Bay, to be shown on every sports show and have them figure out which other NFL quarterback even thinks about trying to make this play.

Wanting to take a positive spin – Will this be the next step in the evolution of Patrick Mahomes?

First full year – He is the wonder kid who showed that what seemed impossible was possible
Second full year – He learned to matriculate more and showed how clutch he can be in big moments
Third full year – He showed how tough he was (need no other evidence than his fourth quarter play) AND will he learn to bark at the offensive line when needed?

I can’t stand that crap. Coaching goes hand in hand with talent. Mahomes is great, but coaching is why we lost (maybe even more-so than OL). Reid/EB got absolutely pants’d today. No one player can overcome a scheme AND talent disadvantage.

If the only plays you have on your wrist to call or audible to are man-beaters, but TB is running zone +80% of the time (which they were), you will struggle to move the ball. That’s what happened today. barf

I agree that Reid got out-coached in this game and that Mahomes can only do so much. But no matter how good he is or how good the coaching is, he’s gonna hear about how “he can’t/couldn’t beat Brady.” I’m sure that would give him at least some motivation.

The best thing that the team could do is to beef up their interior line and develop some sort of run game up the middle to complement all else we do. You can hide bad tackles against good pass rushers if you can run the ball well. Not saying I do not want better tackles but Mahomes will get killed if we stay too one dimensional.

I tend to be lenient on coaches who have a history of success cause somedays you just make the wrong calls but, in this case, I did not see an intentional plan at the beginning of the game to help the tackles – it seemed to be more haphazard and to see what Tampa would do. Took too long to open it up – we saw some increased success in the third quarter. Definitely not a shining day for Reid or Bienemy.

Seems like Andy went more with the “Our linemen will be fine” attitude rather than the “Let us game plan around two weaker tackles” idea. Seems like he did not do much to counter their fast linebackers as well. More like the we do what we do approach which bit us in the ass for this game. I have brought up a few times about running right at them – sounds like a bad idea with them having the number one running defense and our struggles with running at times during the season but, if you run more towards the middle, does it open Kelce up more, allow us to hit the edge with Hardman or Hill and make the safeties move up to play the run game which might open up the downfield attack as well as slowing their pass rush and, perhaps, taking them by surprise as we change up what we do. WIll never know…

Tyreek Hill – saw him smiling with about six minutes left in the game (I prefer pissed at this moment)
Travis Kelce – was pissed about losing which impacted his performance to a certain degree
Patrick Mahomes – was pissed about losing and did everything humanly possible to fight to the last down

My take – Honey Badger realized that the referees were doing their best to screw KC. Jones is a great player but is not a leader on the line. Hill disappears from some games and has to be refocused by someone else. Kelce can get to the point of losing focus when pissed. Mahomes proved that he is a greater quarterback and leader than we can comprehend.

If Kareem could block a few DL lol. I’m not sure any RB in the world was going to save this game.

Teams facing the Chiefs in the future will try and repeat the four down lineman pressure and sitting back deep. We need a consistent answer here – Kelce was doubled and mugged but CEH entered into the picture late and I still question how much of a number one back he might be. Do we start with more double tight end formations – with another tight end who can actually catch the ball – draw the defenders up and utilize more play action?

Honestly, that’s plan A for every team. If you can get pressure with 4 and play coverage, your defense is kicking ass. Most teams can’t do it consistently for an entire game because their DL isn’t THAT much better than the OL. Tonight it was. Damn hard to counter. So the answer is to improve up front this off season, through improved health, FA, or draft IMO.

Step one is to definitely improve the line.

Hunt didn’t do much for Cleveland. I’m thinking the love for him is strictly nostalgia talking. CEH did well. You can’t hit slow developing plays when your QB is running backwards half the time

When we had Hunt and his running and catching ability, the other teams could not simply sit back deep and rush the passer cause he would tear them up. No coincidence that Mahomes had higher numbers with the deep passes cause he had Kareem to keep them honest.

Those were the things they got CEH to do. Not sure why they haven’t used him like that, but tonight I don’t think it would have mattered who was back there. Did Bell even get in the game? Again, pass catching is supposed to be his strong suit. You’re getting torched. Why not try him?

I was wondering where all the motion and jet sweep-like plays were to help Mahomes/OL this game, but I think they went away from them because of the incredible sideline-to-sideline speed of White and David.

Play-action and RPO went out the window because of the 2 high they were playing all night.

In retrospect, we should have run right at them more often in the first half – negate their speed. That is unfortunately a weakness of ours but we were able to do so in the second half.

Weakness of ours and a strength of theirs. I believe they were a middling defense against the pass and top 5 against the run. No bueno.

Okay to slow the game down and their pass rush down if the belief that the offensive line is overmatched at the tackle position.

I think the entire OL was over-matched. Reid/EB were really forced to abandon the game plan to protect the crap OL (with a lot of help from some dudes in stripes) and didn’t have a good plan for the coverages TB was using. Reid got pants’d pretty good today.

I could be wrong but I thought I saw him out there for one play. CEH was very effective with some runs up the middle in the second half. In the first half, it seemed like the play calling was influenced by having both back up tackles in the game. We opened up more in the second half but got to the point where it was open season on Mahomes.

My respect for Mahomes grew during the fourth quarter of this game. He took shot after shot, ran a mile or so to avoid pressure, made some throws that had a chance of making the difference. He went down fighting like a champion.

Mahomes is a guy that will give stats idiots ammo. 3rd and long, or 4th down, or down big, he’d rather throw a bomb into coverage that throw it away, take a sack, dump off to a RB, etc. He gives 0 shits about stats lol

They need to put his fourth quarter scrambles and throws into one video and play it for any fucker that says he is not a top all time talent.

Make it as easy as possible for Tampa Bay to score. Why else would you call timeouts for them at the end of the half when they only had 1 timeout left themselves?

EAFOX

I never like calling timeouts there. I could live with the first one but the second one – third and short was a bad decision.
