Breaking News: Chiefs Release Anthony Hitchens

After trading away Alex Smith and naming Mahomes the starter in the 2018 offseason, the Chiefs were flush with cash and Veach was ready to spend. One of the big signings was linebacker Anthony Hitchens whose rookie deal with the Cowboys had run out.

Hitchens was the best linebacker on the team for a couple years until Willie Gay and Nick Bolton got regular playing time, although that said more about the quality of the other linebackers than anything. With Hitchens’ mediocre performance being outshined by the two young guys, his services were no longer required.

According to Over The Cap, this move will save the Chiefs $8.4 million against the cap.

he’s big, maybe he can defend against the run on the D-Line

Hitch was ok against the pass … wouldn’t mind him coming back on a very very very team friendly deal

I liked Hitch, he was a bit overpaid and inconsistent. However, he made a lot of vital plays for the Chiefs at times. I’ll remember him better than he was.

Hitch is one of those players that I wasn’t hot to get rid of, but I’m also not hot to retain. Best of luck on his job hunt, it was nice while it lasted.

Also, I ask this every year and every year I forget. What is the difference between ore-June 1 cut and post June 1 cut?

One allows the dead cap $ to be spread over 2 seasons.

More precisely. Pre June 1st balance of bonus that has been spread out over the contract comes due on that year’s salary cap. Post June 1st it stays spread out.

Adam Caplan
@caplannfl
He was on the final year of his 5-year contract at $7.8m for 2022, cap # $12.7m.

Such an overdue move. We’re good with Gay and Bolton and maybe now we’ll get to see if DOD is actually a bust or just inexplicably hated by Spags.

I wish him well we desperately needed him when we got him.

I wish Hitchens well. He played well for us IMO. Maybe not a rock star but definitely better than we could have had.

I think we’ll be a much improved defense with Bolton and Gay as our 3 down LBs

I think his best playing was Super Bowl time in 2018, IIRC

they might keep him and if possible re-structure his contract

A possibility that shouldn’t be overlooked, I think. While he’s had health and injury issues, the fact remains that his performance hasn’t met the expectations of his pay level. Right now, he doesn’t command premium Edge $$$, but that doesn’t mean he’d be a bad value at a lower cost.

He would have to come way down to match his production.
