With GM Elway ongoing QB struggles.  Denver Broncos select Mac Jones, who played for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He won two College Football Playoff National Championships with Alabama, one as a reserve quarterback in 2017 and one as a starter in 2020. He doesn’t quite have the physical upside of other top prospects. Nevertheless, his best traits have him in the same conversation as Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance.

Patient in the pocket, buys time for receivers, and displays tremendous sense and wherewithal of what’s happening on the field. Goes through progressions, distributes the ball to all his targets, and takes the safe underneath outlet if nothing else is available. Nicely sets up screen passes, throws a catchable ball, and displays a sense of timing on passes. Accurate, does not have receivers waiting on the ball. Shows great pass placement, putting throws where only his receiver can make the reception. True field general who does a great job commanding and controlling the offense.

of the 1st 9 picks I think only Sewell and Chase would I have desired

Slater I thought played Guard

His lack of length will lead some teams to view him as a guard, but the footwork and talent outside might be worth allowing him to prove it at tackle first. His combination of strength, athletic ability and quick processing should make him one of the safer offensive line picks in this draft and an early starter.

well that didn’t happen

Sam Darnold trade grades: Panthers take low-cost flier, while Jets get great value for outgoing quarterback

Now we have to see where Teddy Bridgewater gets sent. Denver or NE? Or my crazy prediction, Houston.

That would be a match-up nightmare. We can’t guard the rbs in the flat.

I love this pick. My belief is Mac Jones ceiling is Derek Carr. His floor is Chase Daniel. Two easy wins in the division for us as long as Jones is on the roster.

As a complete amateur myself, I have to agree. I like Mac Jones; heck, I hope everyone succeeds in the NFL. But if I’m a GM, I really do question picking someone with Jones’ ceiling…..in some cases, as high as #3 to the 49ers. Fields and Lance look to be much safer picks, and also much higher ceilings.

The question is if Paton can actually evaluate the QB position, unlike a certain former QB. Let’s hope he can’t

New GM needs to make Elway happy.

Draft Pick: Bale of hay.

A bale of hay would probably run as fast as Elway did back in the day as a QB.

I always end up hoping that the Broncos will draft someone who should be an undrafted rookie free agent. Fortunately, most of their high picks tend to end up like this, so it’s kind of a wish fulfilled.

Broncos are in kind of a tough position. Facing Mahomes and Herbert each twice a year, they know they need firepower. Drew Lock’s shown flashes, but the clock is ticking on the team’s patience with him. Broncos have a potentially lethal pass-catching group with Sutton, Jeudy, and Fant, but their collective ceiling is significantly hampered by inconsistent QB play. If the Broncos think that they can draft a potential upgrade with Jones, I could definitely see them pulling the trigger.

I think the Broncos expected a much bigger leap by Lock in his second season, but didn’t see it. Going into his third season now, the Broncos might not be able to pass up on a QB if one of them slips to #9. That’s assuming, of course, that the one that slips is someone that they like. Personally, I’m not sold on Jones, but it sounds like a lot of the NFL scouts love him.

Yeah, even among professional scouts, picking a QB is at best a 50/50 proposition. Obviously, the GM and HC mean so much to a QB. Continually rotating in new management and coaching can really screw with a player’s development.
