The Buffalo Bills Blow

steve_chiefs

The Buffalo Bills’ game against the Los Angeles Rams is the likeliest NFL Opening Night matchup, per sources. With the Denver Broncos’ game against the Rams officially announced for Christmas afternoon, Buffalo is the logical choice.
Each year, the NFL’s league champion opens the following season at home against a big-time opponent to kick off the season with a bang. The Rams’ home slate seemed devoid of star power outside of a pair of teams—the Bills and their quarterback Josh Allen and the Broncos and their brand new QB Russell Wilson. The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott would be a worthy option, but they opened the season in 2021 against the champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
When Buffalo made a splash move, signing the NFL’s active career sack leader, former contestant on Dancing With the Stars, AND prominent former Ram that Los Angeles wanted to keep in the fold—Von Miller—they upped the stakes and made it much more likely they would be the team. There are so many storylines at work, and the Bills promise to deliver huge ratings.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ trade up to the 21st overall selection was the catalyst for the Buffalo Bills’ trade up, and while general manager Brandon Beane didn’t admit that the Bills had a first-round grade on Trent McDuffie, it seems pretty clear.
As soon as McDuffie was off the board, the Bills attempted to trade up with the Green Bay Packers at 22, per Mike Silver at Bally Sports, who was embedded with Beane over Draft Weekend. After they were rebuffed, they swung a deal with the Baltimore Ravens at 23 to ensure they got the last remaining first-round grade on their board.
Beane confirmed the trade attempt with the Packers on One Bills Live the Monday after the Draft, saying they just “couldn’t work it out.”

wow, can’t buy smokes or alcohol but

A federal appeals court struck down a California law prohibiting sales of semiautomatic firearms to anyone under 21 years of age, according to a decision filed Wednesday.
The law, which had been in effect since July 1, 2021, also restricted purchases of semiautomatic weapons to one per month for all ages.
Judge Ryan D. Nelson of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals said in his opinion that the law infringed on the Second Amendment rights of those ages 18 to 21.

It was a bad law – unless, of course, you favor repealing an amendment, but once that gets rolling, where does it stop? The 1st now has enemies on both sides of the political divide, after all.

Not only was it a bad law, but the gov’t’s case to uphold it was also bad, and on top of that, the lower court’s ruling was bad, as well. Considering that the 9th Circuit doesn’t encounter many gun restrictions they don’t love (one of their own member judges called them out on that, in an earlier ruling, that should show just how bad it was.

ATTENTION RETAILERS! As of December 20, 2019, the federal age of sale for tobacco products is 21 with no exemption for military personnel.

B & P Code 25658. Sales To Minors

  • Except as otherwise provided in subdivision (c), every person who sells, furnishes, gives, or causes to be sold, furnished, or given away, any alcoholic beverage to any person under the age of 21 years is guilty of a misdemeanor.
  • Except as provided in Section 25667, any person under the age of 21 years who purchases any alcoholic beverage, or any person under the age of 21 years who consumes any alcoholic beverage in any on-sale premises, is guilty of a misdemeanor.

I didn’t say the law repealed the 2nd A, because California can’t do that, as the 9th Circuit just stated. I meant that those who favor its repeal don’t care about how bad the laws are, so long as they add more restrictions on lawful gun ownership.

As for Steve’s comment, smokes and booze are not enumerated rights in the Constitution. Also, the legal experts relevant to the decision’s opinions outweigh those of folks who can’t understand why laws can’t violate those rights. If one wishes to undue the brain explosion, there’s a simple solution, get busy learning how laws and courts work in real life, rather than relying on the press, TV & movies.

Is drinking alcohol a right?
Consumption of alcohol is not a basic right of citizenship like the right to vote. It is a privilege. And given the many negative social and health concerns arising from alcohol use, I fail to see how anything positive can come of expanding that privilege even further.Jan 2, 2018 the rights of the

I know you disagree, but ruling “well regulated militia” includes private citizens was/is widely criticized, even by a justice that voted for it. Ignored intent and precedent, not the 1st or last time, no such thing as settled law.

That’s a different topic, likely for a different day. I’ve pretty much said my piece on this one.

Those who want to read the decision itself, instead of relying on media sound bites, will find it linked in the article I linked below. Or one could do what I did on this one, and stick to reading the lengthy excerpts posted by Prof Volokh. 100 pages is a bit much, even for most lawyers, to read casually.

Understood, but a justice changing his mind (granted after retirement) shows how mutable the decision can be, the interpretation of law/precedent changes, nothing is set in stone….there is always a new chisel to use.

All the more reason to protect the Amendments to the greatest extent possible. The 4th, 5th, and 6ths are already in shambles, and it’s the poorest Americans who’re paying the price for all the “good intentions” that drove those chisels.

was just posting an aside to above, then I will let it go.
re: :”constitutional carry” laws.
District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago.
In its decision, authored by Justice Antonin Scalia, the Supreme Court was careful to stress the limited nature of its ruling. Writing for the majority, Justice Scalia noted: “Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited. [It is] not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.”

“But third, the district court erred by applying intermediate scrutiny, rather than strict scrutiny, to the semiautomatic centerfire rifle ban. And even under intermediate scrutiny, this ban likely violates the Second Amendment because it fails the “reasonable fit” test. Finally, the district court also abused its discretion in finding that Plaintiffs would not likely be irreparably harmed. We thus affirm the district court’s denial of an injunction as to the long gun regulation, reverse its denial of an injunction as to the semiautomatic centerfire rifle ban, and remand for further proceedings consistent with this opinion.”

Straight from the 9th’s ruling, as cited here:

The Ukrainians have — twice in the last 24 hours — stopped Russians efforts to cross the Siverskyi Donets River in the Luhansk oblast, blowing up two pontoon bridges near Bilohorivka.
A satellite image collected by geospatial intelligence firm BlackSky shows a Russian pontoon bridge crossing the river on May 10 shortly after a Ukrainian artillery barrage hit the surrounding area.
Smoke is seen rising from the western shore of the Siverskyi Donets River at one end of the bridge. On the eastern bank, craters and smoke are also seen on the eastern shore, including around Russian military vehicles that crossed over.
Grainy drone video circulating on social media, geolocated and its authenticity verified by CNN, shows the aftermath of the strikes. The military strikes destroyed the bridge, which is seen half-sunk in the river.

Trent McDuffie wants to be ‘The Spark Guy’ for Kansas City
The biggest knock on McDuffie coming out of college was his size. People said he doesn’t have the size to play outside or match up against bigger receivers, but he’s not hearing any of that noise.
“I do not listen to any of that,” McDuffie said. “You guys know — Tyrann Mathieu’s not a very big guy but he makes plays. I go onto the field every day knowing that, I want to be that guy that I call,’ The Spark Guy.’ Just the guy that you always see who flashes on the screen here and there. Just all-out effort. That’s what I can control is my effort. So just being able to control that, show the coaches that I’m going to run around all over the field with my hair on fire each down is something that I’m going to put on tape.”
