Wednesday Night O/T: Deshaun Watson apparently wants to be traded to Denver

Welcome to AG’s nightly Open Thread, drop in and join a conversation, or start one yourself.

But apparently it’s a non-starter until there’s more clarity on his legal situation.

Made me think of, and re-read AN OCCURRENCE AT OWL CREEK BRIDGE, a good short story.

For me, the poli-sci was mainly limited to the school system. The war discussion was strictly a matter of military history, which to me demands an understanding of context. Wars seldom happen for a single reason, so citing multiple wars as all having been fought for a single reason goes directly against historical evidence.

I have considerable expertise in the History field, not that folks give me much credit for that. To the best of my recollection, my interest in the past started with my book about dinosaurs, in kindergarten. However, I didn’t quite understand why the teacher was all kinds of impressed that I could pronounce their names so well. It was easy, after all, and tyrannosaurus rex, the king tyrant lizard was fun to say, especially when I knew the translation. So I just didn’t get it, as I had no idea that Agent J would have shot me in my forehead because of it. 😉

I’m not sure that South Korea being independent of Pyongyang’s dictatorship was meaningless. ‘Nam was in part a political bone to France, to keep them from falling in with the Soviets for help maintaining their rubber plantations. Iraq’s another one that’s significant – and still is, unless you think it becoming Iran Jr is also meaningless. Afghanistan, however, I agree with you about it being a waste of blood and treasure.

Nobody can keep the peace there, not even Afghans. It’s been beyond every empire that’s tried to do so, the Brits and Soviets in particular – but military history’s not a respected field of study, these days.

The US before the start of WWII was not a military-industrial predominant country

So, nothing I said is meaningful, in spite of its historical accuracy? This complex you mentioned is the only reason we got involved in any of that, and our alliances should be dissolved in favor of isolationism?

To paraphrase Mr Mencken, you have hit upon an answer that’s simple, obvious, and wrong, at least by itself. I cited each event as having different specifics behind it, not some hard-to-define single-cause answer.

no every conflict has a reason

but what is the underlying reason?

the wealthy, get wealthier

the US learned in WWII that we had soldiers and we could use them as a currency

We had just killed all the Germans. Japanese, and Italians

so we put our youth on the line to stand down the Russians and Chinese?

we did also try to create NATO to help us

but whatever, the US youth was sacrificed and that bill has now come to be paid

We had to go to Afghanistan to find that POS. There is an arguement for covert ops but that obviously didn’t happen. I think we stayed because all the wack jobs fled to Pakistan, it became unstable and they have nukes. I have no idea why we needed to invade Iraq. The UN inspectors reported no WMD’s, we blow them off and go anyway.

Well, since Alexander the Great anyway. Of course he did it by basically killing or conscripting every breeding age male he could get hold of and leaving behind enough manpower to kick start a repopulation. I think that might be frowned upon nowadays. Having said that – it’s not vastly different to what China have been doing at a lower level in Tibet for a few decades.

Geothermal is underutilized, but has limited applications. Nuclear is the most efficient/cleanest way to produce elec. Spent fuel has always been the major drawback as far as safety/security/cost.

But why not drive a pipe to heat and a return pipe to steam

BleedingRedAndGold
Reply to  steve_chiefs
06/09/2021 8:13 pm

Dead oil wells generally aren’t deep enough, and tend to not be well-positioned WRT proximity to hot spots in the crust, such as Yellowstone.

Furthermore, it takes more than just steam to turn a turbine. You need superheated, high-pressure steam for that to work efficiently. Fission’s pollution doesn’t get dispersed into the air, it can all be contained pretty safely, unlike fossil fuels.

This is why I have little respect for any Climate Change activist who isn’t also a pro-fission activist. The only reason for not doing that is political. It’s the result of a demonization campaign that’s lasted for decades, but since you can’t criticize the No-Nukers and remain in good with the Left…

10 years late and 10 times over budget. Keep in mind too that the current cost to decommission a nuke plant is also billions of dollars.

Keep in mind when somebody says its going to cost X to do a nuke project. Its actually going to be at least 5X if not 10X and its going to take at least several years longer than quoted and theres a significant chance the project will cost billions of dollars and never come on line.

This is based on working on a number of nuke projects in my career.

“No Nukes!” was far more important, and usefully scary.

Same thing now, WRT GMOs, Golden Rice in particular. Greenpeace and their allies are determined to ensure that kids in 3rd World countries continue to suffer due to a lack of dietary beta-carotene. Blindness, death, and other lifetime health problems among those kids is apparently a small price to pay in their Luddite crusade against the menace of genetic engineering. We should have stuck to using radiation- and chemical-induced random mutation, the way Nature intended. Bah.

Well wind and solar are comparable to gas now. Obviously there are drawbacks with them too though. Coal is deader than dead. Its truly amazing how the finances have changed in the last 10 years. Im never going to be a big proponent of nukes until they can prove its economical to build them and have a plan, any plan, for spent fuel.

There’s some truth to what you say about reactions, but this gal goes into specific details about his technique, all the things he did particularly well on a song she’d never heard before. What she said about Reznor’s original I don’t know, but she was extremely impressed by Cash’s cover of Hurt. Similar breakdown, again going into detail about what he did vocally and why it worked so well. You don’t get that from ordinary reactors, but you do get it from opera singers, or at least one more of them that I’m aware of.

No idea why he thinks a vaccine is for treating a disease. The man attended college without learning that, which should have been addressed in K-12.

The US public school system sucks because it’s more concerned with socializing kids than teaching them. I recall one instance where a school tried going back to multiple recesses for kindergarteners that lasted longer, and sure enough, the kids learned better during the trial run. Which meant that the school did the obvious thing: Drop the two 20min recesses back to the single 15min one. Bah.
