Wednesday Night O/T: Bill Barnwell says Mahomes is a Hall of Fame Lock

Welcome to AG’s nightly Open Thread, drop in and join a conversation, or start one yourself.

Today Bill Barnwell released an article rating the Hall of Fame chances for players on every team, and he put Mahomes as a 100% lock.

I addressed this in my MVP column in July. Mahomes’ résumé — a league MVP and Super Bowl MVP — is usually enough to get a player into the Hall of Fame, let alone doing it over two seasons as a starter.

When I looked at it back in Fabruary, I concluded that Mahomes was close, but not quite there.

What do you think? Is Mahomes already a Hall of Fame lock?

There is not a single Hall of Fame (bold) DB with a lower score on this list. And as we know there’s a lot of players who have been inducted from earlier eras who don’t always have great resumes. EB’s resume doesn’t even beat those guys.

VOTW (I know this isn’t a votw Friday thread but I’m on vacation so whatever): took my nephew out shooting for his first time today. He got to shoot a 9mm pistol, a .357 revolver, an AR-15, an AK, and a .357 lever action.

His favorite was the AR but I think that’s because I run a trijicon acog on that and it’s a really great optic.

Oh ya. I’m adamant about gun safety. Barrel down range at all times, if he so much as didn’t pull the charging handle back enough to load a round into the chamber and the gun doesn’t fire when he expects, he had to put it down and let me inspect the barrel for feed issue or double load. Finger doesn’t touch the trigger until ready to shoot, etc.

These things need to command the utmost respect. We even talked about NDs and how they happen.

Fortunately he didn’t have any issues other than not pulling the charging handle ban enough to load a round. But it was training him that if something is wrong or is not working as expected to immediately put the gun down and allow me to inspect.

I did actually end up with a feed issue that caused a jam in my lever action, which ended up being a good thing because it was the first time I’d had any issue with it so he was able to see my diagnose the problem and fix it (has to disconnect the ammo feed tube, drop all the rounds out and then use a really tiny Alan wrenchtip wriggle the jammed round out).

I have no skin in the game. Almost hardly anyone i know has a gun, including me. Having said that, its a slippery slope when you start letting the government dictate who can and cannot have a gun. Yes, felons cannot have a gun. But when you go beyond that, into the realm of mental illness for example, how on earth do you regulate that, better yet, trust the Govt to regulate it? It’s a SLIPPERY slope. I’m not a huge gun guy but even I can understand why you wouldn’t want to give the government an inch on this issue. The more responsible gun owners the better in my opinion.

Other than the specifics mention, I agree with you on every point. I’ve shot many different guns, up to and including my asshole-in-law’s AR with a bump stock. Decent simulation, but you can do about as well if you know how to position the sling. I have never pointed a gun at another human, and fate willing, never will.

But if it becomes necessary… Well, doubt that’ll ever happen, as 99% of folks are decent enough, even non-violent petty criminals.

lol, I sometimes thought you were overly critical of your bro in law but hearing he has a bump stock makes me think him a total douche.

Not that I think it should be illegal but from a practically standpoint it is dumb. I’m not even fond of automatic weapons, it’s just a waste of ammo outside of some very specific and God willing unlikely circumstances. And the bump stock doesn’t have the accuracy associated with a belt fed SAW.

But then, his father was a bigot (though had the good sense to not go there in public), and he’s little different. Betcha he still believes that Tyreek broke his son’s arm, too.

Knives, spears, and swords, as well, not to mention bows and arrows, crossbows, and other things. I expect every tool mankind has ever invented has at one point been used to kill.

But then, not one of those have folks so eager to take them away from their fellow citizens, just in case they might use them to commit a crime. I haven’t taken a deep dive, but I expect that when you eliminate crimes of passion few legally owned guns are used in very few crimes.

And I also know that those “gun deaths” numbers I used to see used as propaganda grouped in suicides without mentioning that and called 24yos “children”. Even “mass shooting” can be misleading, since there is no standard regarding a threshold number. How many make a “mass”? And don’t get me stated on all the bullshit that gets slung about when it comes to “assault rifles”, because what is described is almost never an actual assault rifle. By the commonly used definitions a Ruger 10/22 qualifies, or will if you go composite adjustable stock instead of wood to fit your frame better. Meanwhile, an actual battle rifle in the M1 Garand won’t qualify unless you modify it.

And finally, contrary what the press and pols say long arms are very seldom used in the commission of crimes. Too many anti-gunners have pissed down the back of my neck and told me it was raining.

If you have need or want of an AK or AR it should be registered, but that’s just me. (I know the counter arguements and don’t necessarily disagree, horse is out of the barn anyway)

AKs/SKSs I’m not all that fond of, but the attraction of the AR-style platform is its adaptability. Being able to reconfigure one way for target practice and then a heavier load to get your yearly deer with more expensive ammo, or simply customize it to fit your preferences? That’s a lot to take away for a weapon that is very seldom used to kill actual humans.

Ban them if you like, but it won’t make anyone safer.

I actually prefer the AK, mostly because of its dependability and low maintenance. A piston is superior to gas impingement in terms of lowering carbon buildup.

I do also own an AR10 that is piston system so I might say that’s my favorite because it has the advantages of the AK platform

BleedingRedAndGold

Matter of taste, and while you do have a point the initial problems with the M-16 didn’t come from the design side, but the supply side issuing cheapo ammo the gun wasn’t designed for. Some modifications were made and the ammo was improved, and the most egregious issues went away.

I’ve seen articles in gun mags where literally thousands of rounds were run through an M-16 back in the 80s, without the weapon ever being cleaned, though presume they did take some care to not burn out the barrel. Beyond that, a really well-made and well-maintained AK is accurate enough, but there’s a sea of them out there that are only good for shooting in a general direction at any sort of range. Good enough for ambushes or depradations, but if I had an M-16 I would not drop in in a combat situation in favor of an AK I found.

Agreed. I waited a long time because I wasn’t gonna get a stamped receiver version because of accuracy issues. Finally found a milled Bulgarian made arsenal on consignment and being sold by one of the guys that worked at my regular range so it was a no brainer for me at that point.

And I gotta admit I love the 7.62×39 round. I’m more accurate at 100 yards with iron sights on that than I am with my AR running the acog

Yeah that’s a fair point too. It’s hard to compare numbers/accomplishments between careers of different lengths. Is it better to have lower overall numbers, but crammed into a shorter career (more brilliant, but over less time), or higher overall numbers over a longer period?

There’s also a lot of “would have’s” here too. If X tight end from the 70s and 80s was playing in the current era he would have higher numbers.

Indeed. That’s why, by and large, I eschew “GOAT” discussions. You can’t really compare, say, Kelce to Gonzalez or Tarkenton to Mahomes because the younger guys are building on legacies built by the older.

and I’ll contend to this day that every single player in the NBA should pay (literally money tribute) to Julius “Dr J” Erving … he made it the “popular entertainment” sport that it is, and the (eventual) huge money along with it … before Jordan, before Magic & Bird. there was The Doctor

I featured this guy in an OT the other day because although an NFC guy I thought he did decently at it with the Chiefs. Exchanged some pleasantries with him, and since he’s basically just getting started I thought I’d give him a bit of exposure with his hot take on Belichick and the Pats. Serious? Nah, but entertaining, at least. If you do check him out, I hope y’all stay courteous. Not all Chiefs fans have.

People are putting rivers into the hall of fame and Mahomes already has more super bowl wins and more MVPs than he does.

It’s a done deal. The next 6 rings are just icing on the cake.

Over the last two years, yes you can argue that there was a trend downward, but I think saying he’s been trending down for 6 years is a bit of a stretch.

Agreed. As Pantera would say, all I need is 5 minutes alone.

Not you’re saying you’re a bit wrong in this case, though there are those who routinely kill dogs for little reason and few seem to be upset by it.

I’d rather have that sort of encounter with MLPS’ “umbrella man”, the evil SOB.

Prolly too late to edit, but upon futher consideration, please replace “evil” with “vile”. All you have to do is shift the ‘e’, after all.

ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh no just yet …

give him 5 years and yeah, more MVPs or Leading in TDs or YDs or another SB Win (or more) and then … yeah, oh yeah … but it takes time, even with a blazing red hot start to his career, it takes time

All quite true and why I limit such predictions to “potential”, but from what Pat’s been saying he understands the long term. Quite a feat, considering at that age many guys have trouble planning for the short term.

That contract he just signed guarantees him all the time he needs. He is a lock because duration is now a given.
