Wednesday Night O/T: AJ Bouye and Orlando Brown hit the market, should the Chiefs go after them?

Welcome to AG’s nightly Open Thread, drop in and join a conversation, or start one yourself.

The offseason is beginning, which means that we’ll be talking trades and free agency. The two newest players who have become available are AJ Bouye, who was released by the Broncos, and Orlando Brown, who the Ravens said they’re open to trading.

While it’s always tempting to try and sign everybody, I don’t think either of them are a good match for the Chiefs. Brown said he wants to play left tackle wherever he goes, and that’s a position we have set pretty well as long as Fisher recovers from his Achilles tear. As for Bouye, the secondary isn’t much of a problem (depending on which ref crew we get) and he hasn’t played al that well recently, so there’s no real reason to sign him unless he’s cheap.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFSBest-case: Kadarius Toney falls to the Chiefs at No. 31 overall
Worst-case: Calling this a “worst-case” is a bit of a stretch, but not retaining center Austin Reiter and not bringing in a low-cost interior lineman in free agency is less than ideal
The closer we get to the 2021 NFL Draft, the more it looks like Florida’s Kadarius Toney will be a top-20 pick. But if he does end up sliding to Kansas City at No. 31, that’d just be flat-out unfair. Giving Patrick Mahomes an after-the-catch weapon like Toney to pair with Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce would make this already-potent passing offense even more dangerous.
Toney will be one of the hardest people to tackle in the NFL from Day 1 with his combination of balance, agility and explosiveness. On 187 touches in his college career, Toney has broken a whopping 66 tackles while averaging 8.5 yards after the catch.
With Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz back and healthy in 2021, Kansas City’s offensive line isn’t going to look as bad as it did in the team’s Super Bowl loss to Tampa Bay. Bringing back center Austin Reiter — the 12th-highest-graded player at the position in 2020 — would still be wise if the Chiefs can make it work (projected to be $15 million over the cap), but it wouldn’t be the end of the world if he hits free agency. That being their worst-case scenario this offseason goes to show how good of a spot the Chiefs are in once again in 2021.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Chiefs LBs coach Britt Reid is no longer employed with the team.Reid was suspended while under investigation for a DUI crash that left two children hospitalized, and the Chiefs have since let his contract expire after the Super Bowl. He is facing jail time and won’t coach in the NFL again. The organization is in touch with the victims’ family and is offering “support and resources.”

…and I won’t be surprised if there are people screaming that the team’s reaching out to the family was “too little, too late!”, when as legal matters go, this was really quick. That his contract was about to expire may have facilitated that speed, because that’d essentially be a re-hire, not to mention easier on Andy. “We can’t hire him back” is easier to take, and give, too, than “We’re terminating his employment”. Not just on Andy, but the whole organization, since I’m sure there were no few there who like(d) him and would be unhappy if he’d been fired, even if they knew that something had to be done.

And since he said that the team “is in contact” with the family, I wouldn’t be surprised if that process had started several days ago. The silent indifference of the Chiefs organization has been greatly exaggerated.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Patrick Mahomes’ toe injury “went well.”Mahomes will still have a quiet offseason as he rehabs a pretty serious foot surgery, but he should be ready for training camp and the 2020 season opener. The toe injury proved to play a role in the Chiefs’ sluggish Super Bowl performance, although the porous offensive line was the bigger issue. Mahomes has earned the QB1 overall ranking in fantasy until proven otherwise. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce are both under contract for 2021.

A great question

In my little garden, There were newspapers with reporters that held power in check

Now 1 of a 10000000000 websites has commentary with no accountability at least locally

“There were newspapers with reporters that held power in check”

True to an extent, at least given the timeframe. Historically, journalism has always ebbed and flowed between the responsible and irresponsible, in this nation and others. For the current model’s inflection point, while the cracks were showing before this, mainly over Vietnam (and screw you, Mr. Cronkite), I would call Watergate the tipping point, the beginning of when the 4th Estate started to realize they could influence not only voters, but politicians by how they covered things. Since journalists were predominantly leaning Democrat, that’s the way the erosion flowed.

Now the media is dominated by journalists favoring the Left*, outside some very limited pockets. Many places are actively hostile to any journalists who actively lean Right, in fact. That wasn’t the product of conspiracy, just erosion, folks letting things slide because it’s hard to fight against going with your gut. If the major media outlets wonder where their credibility went, the short answer is that they squandered it through activism.

Lots of media outlets outside of KC are stating Britt will do jail time. If that child passes…more jail time. Especially with multiple DUI and if true of Britt calling other peeps before calling 911…while that child was on death doorstep needing help

But legal process still needs to play out

Maybe EB needs to stay with Chiefs!!

I’m not terribly surprised, though I thought they’d take a little more time before deciding.

As for Britt, while I’ll shed no tears over his departure, I’ll still leave it to the system. Having a firm opinion right now won’t do anyone a lick of good.

There are scenarios with this situation that could end up with Andy not being our coach next year.

I couldnt care less about Britt. I dont wish him ill but if he was drunk then he deserves to get the book thrown at him.

The fact that he was leaving work when this happened even if it was just “2 or 3 drinks” brings up a lot more questions that need to be addressed by the organization.

If Andy knew Britt drank at the facility and didnt do anything about it.

If multiple coaches drank together at the facility and a blind eye was turned to this behavior.

I mean Andy was Britts father and boss. What did he know about his drinking?

on a different note today

President Trump is celebrating a caravan of supporters who followed a Biden-Harris campaign bus in Central Texas.
In a Saturday night tweet, the president retweeted a video showing his supporters surrounding the bus, set to Tech N9ne’s “Red Kingdom.” “I LOVE TEXAS!” Trump said.
The tweet came after a separate video surfaced showing vehicles with Trump 2020 flags boxing in the blue campaign bus as it traveled Interstate 35 from San Antonio to Austin. In a statement, the Biden campaign said the cars slowed in front of it in an attempt to “stop the bus in the middle of the highway,” The Washington Post reported.

I just discovered Yooperlite today, but that’s OK. It wasn’t even discovered until 2017, out on the shores of Upper Michigan. Or “Yooper Michigan”, in local parlance. I’m guessing the mix of minerals (sodalite being the fluorescent part), which would mean that the guy who discovered it only got to place-name the stuff, but time to research it has necessarily been limited. I could be on the shore of Superior in a couple of hours at most, so maybe I should buy me a UV flashlight and call in a favor from someone, come next autumn. It’s cool stuff, no question.

There’s a TE prospect on that list, too. If he can make progress with a better offseason than last year allowed for, could be a nice piece to have. Can’t recall the name, but Seth Keysor dubbed him Camp Guy last preseason, and he’s got a pretty good eye for film.

from drafttek

The loss of the championship game should have consequences in the NFL Draft which occurs a little over two months from now, on April 29. The gritty assortment that made up our offensive line was no match for the All-Pros facing them on the other side of the ball. Patrick Mahomes was pressured on 49% of his throws. The Buccaneers picked off the gimpy QB twice, landed 8 QB hits, and sacked him 3 times. The Chiefs converted only 3 of 13 attempted third-down conversions and just 1 of 3 fourth-down conversion attempts. Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz are solid players, but time is not on their side. Alex Leatherwood, and last year’s RD3 pick, Lucas Niang, launch a youth movement at the position.

We did it!!! Wooooooooo!!! Hooooooooo!!!!!! There were times in the season where the Bucs’ assemblege of disgruntled has-been superstars (Antonio Brown, Ndamukong Suh, Gronk, Leonard Fournette) would collapse (NBA-style) under the weight of their collective egos. Actually there weren’t “times in the season” when this appeared the case; it was the entire season, and even into the playoffs when the inevitable loss seemed right around the corner. But Tom Brady’s leadership kept the group in check. Actually, all four of the disgruntled were highly instrumental in the Super Bowl win, with the three offensive players in that group accounting for all four touchdowns, while original Bucs like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin had a relatively quiet day.

Even early in the season, the offensive line became a point of concern. However, the scrappy unit of backups, 7th-rounders, and free agents played above their skill level even into the playoffs. They met their match, however, in the Super Bowl. (I question why FB Anthony Sherman had zero offensive snaps? Why wasn’t he utilized to aid the blockers upfront?) Help in the trenches is a necessity.

Deonte Brown did not allow a sack across 3 seasons at Alabama (865 snaps) and played exceptionally well against Ohio State in the College Football Championship game. He is adored for his massive size and ridiculous strength. However, at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, coaches complained that he was carrying too much extra weight, about 30 pounds, causing a severe lack of mobility and change of direction.

Round two Guard and a diet 🙂
