Wednesday Night O/T: 18 massage therapists come out in support of Watson, which only raises more questions

Welcome to AG’s nightly Open Thread, drop in and join a conversation, or start one yourself.

So Watson’s lawyer came out with this letter with a bunch of massage therapists saying he didn’t do anything wrong when he was their client. Sounds good on the surface, but a lot of people wonder why he had so many. On top of that why does he use social media to find them?

At this point the best case scenario for Watson is that he’s kind of weird when it comes to how he gets massages.

Advice from a lawyer to DeShaun Watson

I was reading that dumbass who shot people at the Jewish canter in OP is now appealing his death sentence on the grounds he wanted to represent himself and the judge let him. I didn’t live far from where that happened in OP. Yeah, the people you killed didn’t have the choice to appeal.

Due Process doesn’t protect you from your own bad decisions, but the appeals process is there to filter out the innocent, not to provide loopholes to criminals. And quite frankly, those courts tend to err on the prosecution’s side, unless something egregious is involved.

The guy’s an asshole, but don’t hate a system that’s often the last chance for the literally innocent. Unless, of course, you want to imprison the innocent in order to be sure that as many guilty people are punished as possible. Not that I think you actually do, but that’s the direction your resentment takes you. Do you want to give up your own right to appeal? Because that’s the result of preventing the obviously guilty for getting appeals, and it’s unavoidable. If it’s a right, it applies to everyone, though there are too many exceptions to that.

What he’s doing is wasting taxpayer time and money, but when it comes to protecting an important right, it’s just another installment in the mail. What’s your preference, y’all, because you can’t have it both ways. That’s the path of corruption.

I watched the livestream of the George Floyd trial – they showed the officer cams pretty much in full. Hard to tell the precise moment that it went from detaining a person with mental issues or on a drug trip to the time when one of the officers had to realize that deescalating the situation and calling for medical assistance was the proper call. Disturbing to watch.

One thing to remember is that as an officer of the court, when acting in his professional capacity as he did here, knowingly giving false statements could get him into serious hot water. So he most likely has statements from those 18 women and is providing the information in good faith.

There’s also a certain numbers game going on, one which began with the accusers piling on, so it makes sense to counter those with as many character witnesses as possible. To do otherwise means an uphill battle under the weight of hostile PR, so establishing that whatever Watson may or may not have done, it wasn’t habitual or routine. He appears to have a high-end lawyer for this one, one doing a good job, so far.

Remember that the duty of a defense attorney is not to get their client acquitted by any means necessary, but to provide them with a zealous defense within the bounds of the law. Too many people assume the former to be the case, and I strongly suspect that the reality is that the number of corrupt defense lawyers is far lower than that of prosecutors.

The other part of the numbers game is that in total this guy has been to at least 40 different massage therapists in a couple of years. That is fucking unbelievable. If they said this guy went to at least 40 different barbers in the last few years I would think he was no less of a complete fucking weirdo.

It does seem a bit odd, but being odd has no direct relevance to assuming guilt on his part. Watkins is weird, no question, but that doesn’t make him a bad person. I’m as weird as a snake’s suspenders, myself. So?

I disagree with the idea that there are more corrupt prosecutors than corrupt defense attorneys.

Prosecutors have absolute immunity, defenders can face legal consequences. Prosecutors who are seeking later elections also know that a high conviction rate is good PR, and what’s justice? Do you know that violations of Brady vs Maryland are essentially routine? Likely not, because you likely don’t know of the case. How long a litany of incidents of misconduct without accountability would you like me to recount?

I ask because the totality could take quite a while. I have studied these things in depth, but you are welcome to your own opinion. When I talk about this stuff, it is grounded by years of research and self-education, with the goal always being to get at the facts so I could dispel illusions. Do you read appeals court rulings even once per year?

And I’m sorry for being testy, but while I’m hardly an expert per se, some folks out there haven’t a clue about how the system actually works. Here’s a protip: Eliot Stabler in real life would be a dangerous, violent criminal without any regard for your rights at all, especially once he’d judged you as the guilty party. From there, staying within the technical bounds of the law would be a matter of preserving the conviction, not justice. He was a villain, hiding in plain sight. It can be frustrating when folks refuse to accept hard realities, and legal stuff can be the worst.

Tomorrow, Opening day for Colorado Rockies baseball @ 2pm MST

Before game….
I’ll be going to a SPA — I know, I know (it’s NOT a manly man thing)

BUT….
this spa – has a hot tub, filled with BEER to soak in! Now you understand 🙂 🙂

After hot tub, you can sit in a sauna or massage chair, those fancy azz chair shiznit.
AFTER all that the place has a BAR in it!

Hope I make the actual game.

No doubt there was an oldster or two who thought similar things, having watched the last of the once-great cedar forests of Lebanon be eroded away by axes. That copper and bronze stuff were too dangerous to be used by humans, amIrite? The end of the world is near! Just like always.

Especially since I admitted to myself that the climate was warming unnaturally, it has annoyed me more and more how hard science infotainment pushes climate change. They bring it up at the drop of any excuse, but when they do, there’s precious little education involved, it’s all intended to influence. I resent being told what to think, especially when they’re not even making a case for their statements. If you want to change my mind, emotional tactics like that will always backfire, because I can see right through it. Self-righteous assholishness does not become them well.

It is what it is, but I’ll start taking the Climate Change nannies seriously just as soon as they place fission power back on the table. Since that goes directly against the uninformed beliefs of their audience, I’ll be surprised if they get honest again in my lifetime. Nuclear waste is too high a price to pay to “save the planet”? Cool story, bro. Come back when you’re serious about what you intend.

So thats what something like 50 masseuses now some of which he has to fly in for some reason? Even if hes 100% cleared somehow, which he’ll never be able to do with it being he said she said, Im not sure what the NFL options are to do with him. Let him off scot-free and its a horrible look for the NFL however punishing and innocent man because of peer pressure is even worse and if they punish him, then they feel he did something wrong and in which case is anything short of a lifetime ban enough but then thats extremely harsh for something thats not getting any actual criminal charges.

Goodell made his bed now hes gonna have to lay in it by making sure he was judge jury and executioner and hoping something like this would never come up

What Movie/movies gave you that original initial fear of what is going to happen as a youngster?

Out golfing one day I smacked an awesome drive and one from the foursome next up, a stranger to me, said “I want to play like that when I grow up” and I responded on the spur: “But I haven’t grown up yet.” All eight of us stood there howling with laughter for a few minutes – one of the best moments of cameraderie I’ve experienced.
