The last Chiefs HC with a losing season retires from the game. He was dealt a bad hand, but had he succeeded here, we wouldn’t have Reid and, most likely, a shiny trophy
Well, the youtube won’t show here, but it’s the GB game that kept him our coach, and led to Andy taking over after the next season
technically, it’s “fruit juice” (yum!)
Better with vodka, Worcestershire sauce, plus some this and that.

Food war time. This time is best potato chip. I am a sucker for a good kettle chip and a good BBQ chip. For my money Guy’s BBQ Kettle chips are the best.
Kettle chips hurt my teeth. The old Lays BBQ potato chip – covered with flavor. Most chips today seem to be a hint of flavor – I would imagine cause it saves them money.
Guy’s has the best BBQ chip. Local to KC and they invented the BBQ chip.
believe it or not: :ays came in FIRST (really???)

I can’t imagine a local brand like Guy’s would make this list.
Ruffles. Cheddar Ruffles.
This year
1) Kelce
2) JuJu
3) MVS
4) Great Interior Line
Drop off on two but four is a much more pleasant option
I would argue
if you are going to add an entire player group….
1) WR’s
2) TE’s
3) refocused Coaching Group
4) as Texas_Chief would say ” The Shallows

To address a few of the comments, I have always broke down offenses by looking at the four best options on a team. Others may contribute here and there but an offense runs on the star players.
We had
1) Kelce
2) Hill
3) Hunt
4) Watkins
Hell of an offense when Watkins is your fourth option.
We had
1) Kelce
2) Hill
3) Great Interior Line (with a coach who prefers to pass)
4) Combo of DRob, Hardman, and Pringle
I blame Andy and Bienemy for not using option three more but that is a huge drop of for number four.
maybe the issue was #3 … ?
and if #3 had been “more runs!” then maybe that would’ve opened things up a bit more for #4
maybe
damn flow charts
I worked with a lady at school who used flow charts as a fix for any problem that presented itself. I always figured that she had stock in a flow chart company.
In their defense, we did not posses a RB that exuded confidence that they could reliably gain more and hold on to the ball going up the middle.
… and hold on to the ball
you expect a lot, don’t you?
it is a big ball
I will also blame the coaches for not finding a better fourth alternative – Fortson before his injury could have been a candidate and McKinnon catching passes on the outside towards the end of the season. Did Gore get a serious opportunity to surpass MEH-CEH who is at best a little above average?
Basically, I see two types of offensive philosophies – overkill with what is working and throwing everything in the playbook at you. In the NFL, you have to find the right mixture. Dramatic examples – BB when he will run 40 times in one game and 3 times in the next. Think SF in their run to the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, think of KC when McKinnon seemed unstoppable late in the season but never got more playing time and, before his injury, Fortson proved to be a reliable target but was rarely targeted between the twenties. Andy is definitely the second type – we all await the trick plays but, sometimes, when in a dogfight, you need to flip to the other side. Our interior line dominated some games – why not more runs up the middle that is eating up seven or eight yards at a clip – no matter what point of the game.
Our interior line dominated some games – why not more runs up the middle that is eating up seven or eight yards at a clip – no matter what point of the game
with the line for this season, amen to that
agree
now I ask
how much does our OC affect the play calls? Andy could call the game and just kill the opponents.
Hell Patrick could do it and should
he is now 4 years in
maybe, but he kept calling for the Ps in the RPOs they were running in the AFCCG when he SHOULDA been going with the Rs
At the end, there should not have been any RPOs – it should have been run all the way.
no argument from me … shoulda gone run run run when 2nd half started
agree, kill the clock
I do not agree with the philosophy of eating up the clock at any point but the final few minutes – What play call at any point of the game is best to get some first downs.
and therin was the issue
we could have run the ball and killed the clock instead of making mistakes and bringing the Bengals back within striking range
The execution was horrid but I assign a large part of the blame to the play calling at the end.
“What do you think of your team’s execution, Coach?”

Greatest football quote ever!!!!!!!!!!!
Without being in the know, hard to figure out how much is Andy or EB or Mahomes in any given situation. I blame the coaching staff for taking so long to figure out how to attack the three deep look. Did not take a genius to figure out different things to try in those situations.
but how much could you rely on the rest of the receivers
they had some moments, but total trust?
if ya can’t / don’t trust ’em, why are they on the field?
cause it was all we could afford at the WR spot?
And stay with the runner with the hot hand – carries will balance out over the season if all the backs produce.
I think part of the problem was Pat. I think on many of those RPOs he got a bit too over confident in his arm and pulled it in to throw.
he had the two best receivers in the NFL
and both covered like a blanket
True, but little good it did us in the AFCCG.
Part of that issue is that we did not have top notch runners that could take three yards and make them more on a regular basis. MEH-CEH, Williams, and Gore (with few opportunities)
Would he have made the same call had Kareem Hunt been in the backfield.
I see your Red Herring
But will you raise him a haddock?
are you squidding me?
I don’t ink so…
McKinnon was rollin’ at times
Towards the end – sporadically – and on the edge. Definitely should have been used more.
At times. The biggest problem with our run game has been lack of consistency since Hunt got the boot.
We all know many of the problems whenever the Chiefs get in third down – especially third and long. Bad tackle play and the sad sack collection of number two receivers is the primary culprit. However, I would also take a shot at several of our first down and second down calls. There were many games this year where I could easily predict what the Chiefs would do next – before seeing the formation.
agree
Our receiving corps is now 3 times as deep in options than last year
Definitely in potential – seems hard to do worse than the receiver group last year – excluding Tyreek.
well the players have to execute the plan
we have better and more proven NFL players to do that, except Hill
As far as tackle play went last year, especially early on, it wasn’t actually as bad as it seemed, and a good share of gaffes in that area were actually on Mahomes. Mainly it was a matter of bad habits picked up when our Ts were athletic, but the IOL was soft, such as dropping back too far and bailing instead of stepping up. Simply putting a solid IOL in front of him didn’t make those tendencies vanish, he had to re-learn, so as to not put his protectors in bad positions. This year should look much different, even with the same Ts.
experience matters
Brown improved but he still is lacking when facing speed rushers on third and long. Niang was schooled before his injury and was, to me, a major disappointment. Mahomes shares some of the blame but the vast bulk belongs to the tackles.
I disagree with the categorization of “vast bulk”, but I won’t try to talk you around WRT Mahomes’ share.
What’s being left out is last year’s line was built from scratch, and they didn’t really get settled in until past the halfway point in the season. The other thing I think I haven’t made clear is that I’m not going here to defend the gaffes, but rather to say that there’s good reason for optimism in the OL this year. Pretty much everything that was wrong is correctable, given time and mutual experience. We’ll be going in this year with a line that’s developed cohesion, rather than starting from nothing. That can be built on, and as you speculate, it opens up the run game more.
I do agree with the point about being cohesive – though a tackle being beat on the outside is more reflective on him than the line in totality. I would also put some blame on the play calling as well as formations – how often did we roll away from a struggling tackle or put someone out there to chip on them – I believe we led the league in the number of times we put our tackles on islands the last couple of years. Not completely down on Niang but he does need to feel the pressure to raise his game.
Seems I read we were pretty damn good on 3rd Down , No ? … ; )
Yes, and Mahomes to Kelce ought to be analyzed, statistically and otherwise. It’s an extremely effective connection, but I suspect that’s hidden because while they have a large highlight reel, I suspect that lost in the standard analysis is how dominant they are when it comes to important plays, which aren’t as flashy and don’t ring up the stats.
But that’s an absolutely fresh thought, so thank you for asking it. If this new line of thought leads anywhere, I expect you’ll see it.
another super-awesome fabulous post from Nate and y’all don’t even look or reply to it? come on … and then SOME of ya (not all) whine about “lack of Chiefs content” when there’s a terrific piece of work right here …

show the guy some LUV!
That is a superb article.
yes it is
I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating, his writing’s improved a great deal. Y’all don’t see what’s submitted, only what I’ve edited, but to put it plainly, my workload’s gone way down since he started writing again, by way of comparison. As in, from a headache to an easy, fairly pleasant task.
I wish that I had the time and expertise to break football down like he does. I always learn something when I read his material.
He’s always been a good analyst, but his writing drove me nuts. Much more enjoyable now.
IIRC he was still in High School when he started doing some analytical posts … makes sense his word-use and vocabulary, etc, have improved
so glad you two were not grading my posts
all
1000 of them 🙁
you always get an A+ from me
True enough, but this happened between the end of last season and when he started writing again. It wasn’t gradual, it was sudden. That’s noteworthy.
As a comparison, Dan improved gradually, and he had to work at it. Nate took a few months off, and it was like night and day.
Odd that nobody wishes they had the ability to do what I do here. 😉
Guilty.
It’s so long. I’m sure there’s a ton of good information in it, but honestly, I glaze over when I have to scroll that much to see how long it is. I think “I’ll read this when I have time” and then don’t.
In internet terms, these things are War and Peace.
Nate’s a smart kid and do enjoy his articles. Heart has not been into commenting lately though. Don’t see that changing anytime soon.
understood and fair nuff
I sympathize, as I’ve been reluctant to speak my mind on more things than just the controversial. I just hope your soon is limited to the offseason.
Thanks BRaG, just need a break.
Absolutely OK, and I’m glad you’re just stepping back, not walking away.
For my part, I know I can be a firebrand over certain topics (my PTSD came with anger subscriptions, not issues), but I hope you know that I wish you and yours nothing but the best. I know the importance of taking a break for your psychology’s sake better than most. I approve, needless to say. You live in your mind, it makes sense that you act to keep it hospitable.

More accusations against Watson today, this time the New York Times saying he went to 66 different massage therapists in 17 months, almost one per week for a year and a half! They also implicate the Texans in helping him perpetrate and cover up the crimes.
The NFL has to suspend him for at least the season. Anything less would be a PR disaster.
I saw this, but didn’t see the part about the Texans helping him cover it up. Can you link to that?

Big Ben Clue
Saw a tweet that said he was getting a year off BEFORE this latest round. Can he get two?
Depends on how this proceeds – If these cases turn towards paying for sex and such, I would say a year does the trick. If the outcome is more force, I expect a punishment even beyond two years.
he could use the Bob Kraft defense?
66 times?
Kraft was only caught once
he probably did it more than all of the Nike commercials aired combined
right?
If you read #24’s complaint, it was assault with possible battery (not sure what you call what he did, but it is beyond the definition of assault). That’s force. I see him out of the league for a bit. A year would be a plea bargain.
True but that is the complaint, not a verdict.
If he gets charged, that’s all they would need. As of now, there are no charges, but #24 hadn’t filed a complaint yet
he just kept on doing it after he was shown it was an issue

Well, not with players.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes the Browns could void Deshaun Watson’s contract if he’s suspended for conduct related to the latest allegations against him. Florio said Watson’s contract with Cleveland — which made him the highest paid player in NFL history — “exempts from the standard default/guarantee void language a suspension imposed by the league” in connection with the known sexual assault allegations known to the team at the time of the signing. On Monday, a 24th lawsuit was filed against Watson for sexual assault, the second lawsuit against Watson in a week. Florio said “if Watson eventually is suspended for the conduct alleged in the 24th lawsuit, the Browns possibly will be able to void his guarantees and move on from him, and possibly to recover a significant portion of his signing bonus.” Such a dramatic turn of events, Florio added, is hardly guaranteed. Such a move would allow the Browns to move on from Watson without him ever taking a snap for the team. The organization’s public image has been tarnished whether or not Watson takes the field for the Browns. We could see the team make quick amends with Baker Mayfield if Watson is lost for the season — or longer.
so where does that leave the trade between Cleveland and Houston?
Watson finally found his new home on March 20, as he and a 2024 sixth-round pick were traded to Cleveland in exchange for the 13th and 107th overall selections in this year’s draft along with a first and third-round pick in 2023 and a first and fourth in 2024.May 3, 2022
The Times reported that Watson booked appointments with at least 66 massage therapists over a 17-month period from fall 2019 through spring 2021. That number is in contradiction with Watson’s public statements that he hired around 40 massage therapists during his five NFL seasons.

If I’m running the Browns (and since no one apparently is, maybe I’ll apply), I’m cutting losses now.
“This is far worse than we were led to believe. We were promised that there were no other women who may make complaints. We ae rescinding our offer. Baker, come home.”

Brendan Daly impressed with Chiefs’ rookie linebackers
The Kansas City Chiefs infused their already young and talented linebacker corps with more youth and talent this offseason. The team bolstered a group headlined by Nick Bolton and Willie Gay Jr. with a trio of rookie linebackers, adding to a position that has become a strength for the team.
“I’d say all of those three rookies (Leo Chenal, Mike Rose and Jack Cochrane) have come into a moving train in a lot of ways, in terms of where we’re at volume-wise,” Chiefs inebacker coach Daly said. “A couple of weeks into the offseason program, they’ve been inundated with a lot of stuff in a very short period of time. I’ve been impressed with the way they’ve worked at it and handled it.”
One thing is for certain, this room has no shortage of talent. Veterans, free agents and rookies — they’re all creating a competitive environment in which the entire position group can prosper.

So no excuses Daly, if they suck ass
Denver Broncos – Odds to win AFC West (+260)
There has been a thought around the league for the past few seasons that if the Denver Broncos were able to get a quarterback, they would be a contender in the AFC. Well this offseason, the Broncos traded for Super Bowl Champion Russell Wilson. With Wilson in the fold, the Broncos are +260 to win the AFC West and +900 to win the AFC with only the Bills, Chiefs, and Chargers having shorter odds to win the AFC.
The Broncos are set up to have a good season but they have to win games in their division, which happens to be the toughest in the NFL. Last season, the Broncos were 1-5 vs. AFC West rivals. The AFC West is the only division with two quarterbacks who have won a Super Bowl. Additionally, America’s quarterback, Justin Herbert, also plays in the AFC West. While Derek Carr doesn’t have the fanfare the other QB’s do, he may have the best weapon in the division with Davante Adams now rocking the Raiders’ Silver and Black. Carr is also the most tenured QB in the AFC. Wilson makes the Broncos better on paper but I need to see it on the field before I crown them AFC West Champs. PointsBet is reporting 29% of the money in this market backing the Broncos, making them No. 2 in bet count behind the Chargers.

America’s quarterback, Justin Herbert …

never seen that 🙂
Guess this Chiefs team. This is from a specific year and see if you can also guess the players.
WR- Michigan
FB/RB- Colgate
C- Kansas State
TE-Temple
DE- Washington State
FS- Ole Miss
I am stumped
I had to pick some of the lesser-known players from this team in order to make it a challenge.
2012
WR- Michigan – Junior Hemingway
FB/RB- Colgate – Nate Eachus
C- Kansas State – Ryan Lilja
TE-Temple – Steve Maneri
DE- Washington State- never EVER heard of Ropati Pitoitua
FS- Ole Miss – Kendrick Lewis
Yep
WR- Steve Breaston
FB/RB- Nate Eachus
C- Ryan Lilja
TE- Steve Maneri
DE- Riopati Pitoatua
FS- Kendrick Lewis
see, I thought Rodney Hudson was C and Lilja was G … you tried to trick us, din’cha! 😉
Lilja started the majority of the games at C. Rodney broke his legs against the Saints in week 3.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh gotcha, I missed that or something
