Tuesday Night O/T: The entire city watched the Chiefs beat the Bills, and we’re closing in on a record.
146 repliesIf you were to guess what percentage of the televisions that were on Sunday night were watching the AFC championship, what would you guess? Yeah we love our Chiefs, but surely there’s a lot of households that don’t care about sports, or are from other cities and don’t care about the Chiefs, etc. Maybe 50%? That seems like a high number. Is 70% unreasonably high?
No, it turns out it was even more than that.
Kansas City's local TV rating for yesterday's Bills-Chiefs game was a 61.9. Its share was an 85 share. That means that 85% of all TVs in use with the KC DMA were tuned into the Chiefs game. An astounding number.

That is an unbelievable number. And speaking of unbelievable numbers, the Chiefs are approaching a new record.
Only the 3rd time this has happened since the merger, the Patriots (11 games from 2007-2013) and the 49ers (12 games from 1987-1993)

To be favored in a playoff game is impressive. You’re playing the top teams in the league, and yet Vegas still thinks you’re going to win. To be favored in 10 consecutive playoff games requires an insane level of consistency. Not only do you have to be good, you have to be so good that nobody else can even touch you.
I really wanted to buy a couple of these, but it would be cheaper to be in the ICU with Covid.

The privatization/for profit model of the prison system should never have been allowed to happen.
Lol. Have you forgotten what country you live in? That’s funny. 🤣
hey, banks can be trusted to operate in thier own best long term interests, why would they not?
Won’t hear me argue. Everything else aside, it created an industry that lobbies to keep them full, by whatever means they can bring to bear.
I won’t say it was a bad experiment, but you have to pay close attention when you are experimenting, and that wasn’t done.
People imprisoned by The State need to be in prisons run by The State. Period. Though the for profit prison population is incredibly small compared to the rest of the overall prison population. The vast majority of the prison population is actually in holding prior to sentencing, waiting for bail, or waiting to be charged. There’s an article I found about prison populations I’m referring to. I’ll see if I can dig it up because it was actually pretty enlightening.
curious to see CAs %.
i believe they handed off alot.
There it is!

Gonna be a late night for me fellers. My 7 month son has chicken pox, was supposed to be down for the night and just woke up and is active as all hell.
that suck for you both..soothing music?
there are much better renditions but this vid style is new to me. 🙂
Glad to be out of that stage of life. Now I just spend my time telling my teenager to go to bed. LOL
Man, is this a great time to be a Chiefs fan! To the Chiefs!!!
I could look it up, but I’m lazy. Is that the gal who played Fiona on Burn Notice?
No I dont think so
Maybe not, then, and no nipple popping up top, which might be a clue.
No, no, no. That is no Fiona
THAT’S Fiona! I loved how they wrote out her accent between the pilot and Season 1.
Michael: “New look, new accent?”
Fiona: “I’m in Miami now and I thought I should fit in”
Done. Move on.
My favorite TV show of the mid-2000s.
Believe it or not, Jeffery Donovan actually played Mrs BRAG’s (fictionalized, of course father in a small production movie titled “Believe In Me”, based on the account fictionalized by his uncle, a young adult writer of some acclaim in his day. The name of the press box of the Sooners’ stadium’s also named after the uncle, and apparently the FIL had known Jim Gardner during their time at OU.
Truth is stranger than fiction, but that ain’t the half of it. Anyone interested in weird coincidences should ask me about the basketball camp tale.
One of the overlooked things about Mahomes is that in his first season, he had a hard count that was as good as about any vet QB in the league, and it’s only improved since then. Seen it mentioned on a couple of the more player-oriented, nut and bolts type clips, but the word’s out in the league, this guy’s particularly good at it.
Watching the show Alone. Man…to last in the Arctic for 70 days and not win would be horrible.
Awesome show
Oh damn…Day 72, midnight, some dude just burned down his shelter. Below zero temps. Ugh…
Not sure what season you’re on but the contestants get badder and badder. It’s clear that some of those sons of bitches not only could do it forever, but kinda want to.

KC Chiefs Unrestricted Free Agents: Let’s Debate, who do you keep:
Taco Charlton – DE
Ricky Seals Jones – TE
LeVeon Bell – RB
Mike Pennel – DT
Antonio Hamilton – CB
Stefen Winsniewski – LG
Daniel Kilgore – C
Tanoh Kpassagnon – DE
Anthony Sherman – FB
Kelechi Osemele – LG
Mike Remmers – RG
Austin Reiter – C
Demarcus Robinson – WR
Damien Wilson – LB
Bashaud Breeland – CB
Daniel Sorensen – S
Sammy Watkins – WR
Keep in mind…
Chiefs are currently listed as $17-18 million over the projected $175 million salary cap total. There are some new reports suggesting that the projected cap number for the league will be closer to $180 million.
do the rules allow the Chiefs to re-sign vets to a minimum like last year?
Above salaries account for a total of: $39m ish
Top 5 are:
Sammy – $9m
Daniel S – $4m
Bashaud B – $3m
Alex O – $3m
Damiem W – $3m
Total – $22m
but that is already accounted for since they are off the books
the Over the cap number is Chiefs contracts for active players next year
cutting LDT an Schwartz gain us what?
cutting LDT is a negative 2 million. Cutting Schwartz is 6 million is savings . Cutting Fisher is 11 million in savings. I don’t expect both starting Tackles to be o the roster next year
maybe LDT will flat retire and save us the 2 million
if he retires then we are still on the hook for the 2M. My guess is that is part of his pro rated bonus which has already been paid out
agree and well
I do think the Offensive Line is where the Chiefs should look to get younger and cheaper and the Linebacker position also
agree … Mitch and maybe Fish … can we get DeCastroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo? (I kid, I kid!)
I doubt it with his posting on Twitter a couple of weeks ago he’ll be back next year and ready to go
cutting LDT is a negative 2 million
PAY THE MAN!!!
yeah, much as I love me some a “Big Fish & Mitch” Sandwich, it’s gettin’ time to change the menu … Mitch being hurt, likel gone on his own, and Fish be too pricey (doubt he sits out and just rehabs and comes back in 2020, he’d be gettin’ up there agewise)
Sammy … that’s a chunk of change for a part-time player
other guys are reasonable

IMO Sorensen’s a lot more cost-effective than he’s given credit for. He appears to be one of Spags’ Swiss army knives, not the best tool for any particular job, but can do a lot of things as needed. He’s no glamour hound, and Mike Rowe would love him, I expect. Any dirty jobs at hand? Call in Dan, he’ll do it.
IMO Sorensen’s a lot more cost-effective than he’s given credit for
I’ve been saying for years … can’t count how many times I’ve gone round and round with Berserker about #49 (though I suspect he secretly gives the guy more credit than he admits) … from what I’ve read, he’s also a workaholic, studying, improving, and knowing his game … “smarts” count for a lot and can make up for a lot of sins (just like paint!)
Smarts, indeed. Remember Maslowski? Marginal LB athletically, but he was smart enough to make up for that, while he lasted.
Also, in cook-speak, an ounce of sauce can cover up a pound of sins, or something to that effect.
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm bring it, baby!
an Ounce, Sauce, or Sins?
an ounce of sin sauce?
Maz!
King of the solo tackle…8-10 yards downfield.
tbf the defense got worse when he got hurt, mighta made some noise that year (but prob not)
Didn’t Shannon Sharpe burn him for about a 70 TD?
Dunno, but it seems likely. As I said, not the most athletically gifted guy, but smart enough to compensate, somewhat. Well enough to make the roster, at least.
I liked him, but I can’t say he’s great, just smart, tough, and scrappy.
wow! with 10 million in rollover and only 700k in dead cap for next season and they are still 19 M in the hole. That is terrible
What is Hitchens status?
Veach worked that cap big time but here we are playing in the Super Bowl in a week and a half
well worth it
2 million in savings , 8 million in dead cap. YA, it is worth it now, but we are in some real cap trouble starting next year. The one positive is that this is a great culture in KC and players want to play with Mahomes. So guys will take less in free agency. But it will be harder and harder to attract top tier FA’s unless they get the cap under control
To be fair though, nobody’s in good shape for the cap next year. This year was kind of the warning tremors before the massive earthquake that is the NFL top team shakeup next year. KC’s got the best core in the league locked up, but who knows either who we can afford to keep, let alone upgrade from someone else’s scrap heap.
Veach has done a great job in the draft after the Breeland Speaks miss
He will draft players the Coaches can coach up
Draft, UDFA, overlooked FA gems, practice squads, and vets who are basically on the street until next season, he’ll look everywhere. Finance has had months to prepare, and I’m sure that between them and their leader there’s a plan in place. Maybe not finalized, but something to work from.
I bet Veach has already been having conversations to that effect with players and agents.
all this and most likely more
don’t forget about Tim Terry. He ha been very big in constructing this roster
Fair point. The only contending team that is in great cap situation is Indy with 68M. They would be a team to keep an eye on in 2021. The saints are 112 M in the hole!! That has to be a typo
$112 in the hole? hole-y shit … they’re gonna need a bigger stimulus check
Hell a hole that size in New Orleans is a flood
Personally, I wonder if they’re really going to just cut the cap and leave it at that, but that’s for the postseason.
I recall hearing that the League was considering treating cap overages as some sort of “loan” to older players, but I dunno, the optics of that aren’t so hot. With a flat, reduced cap, no exemptions, a lot of expensive vets W/O contracts are going to be out a lot of money if they sign to play in 2021.
valid possibilities … the pandemic has changed everything, it’s a fluid and dynamic situation til they get back to having butts in the seats again
According to Reid, A lot of the players respect Veach, and he’s always a step ahead. Right from the Walrus’ mouth, and he’s not a man given to lying.
who can you sign is the question
ton of guys are gonna hit the market
cause not many teams have any cap to sign their own just like us
I think the owners are gonna get together and they will likely eat the difference and not drop the cap. Those guys aint eager to let the cores of their teams hit the free agent market as cap casualties. They can afford it, they will still be turning a nice profit and not destroying their teams over a one year shitstorm beyond their control is worth the investment IMO. League meeting during suoerbowl week will most likely addres it. It would be stupid to gut teams to meet that cap
Basically, or they put it on the table for the next meeting, looking for options and plans. I know that the image is millionaires being greedy at most times, but billionaires being understanding at least, if not generous, would do a ton for the league’s image.
Being miserly about it is what everyone expects, but that would only make the point more clear: We’ll tighten our belts in order to provide you with the best possible product on Sundays. *Sigh* Which means that they probably won’t do it, but it’s a cheaper dream than buying a lotto ticket.
They are collectively greedy but individually quite generous.
The players who actually are millionaires? You bet, and a lot who make less, too.
The billionaires, not so much.
I don’t know about that. The Rooneys, Hunts, Amy Adams Strunk (Titans), Arthur Blank (Falcons) and Bob McNair (deceased) have all had pretty good reputations for philanthropy. Of course there’s also quite a lot of assholes among the owners too, like the Spanos, Stan Kroenke, Al and Mark Davis, and so on.
till we have cleared 18 million+ in cap we cannot keep any of them
Keep: Taco, Wisniewski, KPass, Sherman, Osemele, Breeland
Let go: Bell, Wilson, Watkins
The rest I leave up to those smarter than me, even Sorenson who has always been on my let walk list. As for the money, its not my money and Veach and Co. turned $176 into Mahomes, Jones, Watkins, Osemele, Bell, and a few others so Im sure they have a plan in place to make it work
Which is why I considered likely cost in my off-the-cuff comment. Of course, who I want to stay takes a back seat to who will actually stay, but my guess is that a lot rides on how willing each player is to play ball with Team Veach. That’s why Watkins staying on seems like a real possibility in my view. He’s already danced that dance a time or two, after all.
Watkins would be well served to stay in KC for whatever they offer
He is not a young pup and would probably get cut with any new team he signs with
he may not get cut if it’s guaranteed, but how much anyone will guarantee a guy who’s been hurt both the last two seasons for big chunks of time is unclear … so there’s that
if I can flat save $9M he be a ghost, we gots DRob, Pringle and more (IMO)
I will check but
Sammie Watkins is an unrestricted free agent after the Super Bowl
We don’t save any money cause his contract is done
Robinson is also done here unless we Re-sign him
gotcha
I’d sure like to keep Remmers because I can see the team being without Fish and Schwartz.
I dont know or watch enough about OL to be able to make a call on them, other than Ive liked what Ive seen from Wis and Osemele when they have been able to play
While cost is a factor, I presume that’s not a part of this. So, let me see. Right off the bat I like Remmers, Sherman, and Sorensen. I think those guys bring a lot of non-obvious value to the team and should stay reasonably priced. Taco’s probably a good bet to return, since I think a large part of him coming here was to rehab his rep, but he didn’t get a lot of tape during the season. Osemele’s likely in the same boat, depending on how his knees heal up. I expect Watkins to play contract ball to stay, he loves it in KC, it’s his dream team and he’s happy here.
Cut: Seals-Jones; Bell; Hamilton; DRob; Sammy; Kilgore;
Keep: Taco; Pennel if cheap; Wiz; Kpass; Sausage; Osemele; Remmers; Reiter; Wilson; Breeland; Dirty Dan.
Debate on.
My big question is: When will Osemele actually be healthy enough to try playing? Two knees for a man his size could prove problematic. Love him if he’s healthy.
Tendons, not ligaments, so while I have no clue about prognosis, it’s not the usual knee injury in play here. Guess I should consult Mrs BRAG on that.
Good reminder. One would think that a tendon would take longer to heal, but I just used the old google machine and it’s remarkable how much quicker the healing time is.
Osemele was seen at practice facility recently. He’s up and running. Probably good for next year
He was there, not participating in any capacity. The #70 was some dude they just signed.
Can confirm. I think BJ mentioned it in a twit, but if not him, someone.
Out: Seals Jones, Bell, Watkins, Kilgore, Sherman, KPass, Wilson, Robinson
Keep: Charlton, Pennel, Wis, Osemele, Remmer, Reiter (gawd I hate saying that), Breeland, Sorenson
Until Niang is a player and the Chiefs can find some quality/cheap younger OL, they have to keep all they can.
Any other year and two time Super Bowl and three time AFC championship talent would be drawing huge Free Agent contract money
I would love to see some of these guys draw big interest from other teams, work some of those comp picks.
Good point, and Team Veach is very good indeed at IDing talent in the later rounds. What he could do with say, four in the 3rd, could have a jackpot payoff. It’s not all Veach, of course, but I think he’s got a really solid personnel-side team to be his eyes, and maybe a system of evaluation the rest of the NFL can’t touch due to staying traditional.
One of the hallmarks of our team now is that traditional methods mean little, functional methods rule. You see it on both sides of the ball, and with Veach as GM, having been with Andy since his first day, it’s likely they operate the same way. Anyone remember me opining that traditional statistics don’t measure this team or anyone on it very well? If Veach uses non-traditional stats in his team’s evals, it would not be surprising, at least to me.
Remmers is the only keep on that list that I would pay any more than close to the vet minimum.
Close to vet minimum guys I would bring back:
Sorenson
Wilson
KO
Sherman
Kpass
Pennell
Taco
The rest of the guys will be too expensive or easily replaced.
Likely an unpopular thing to consider, considering that a lot of folks dislike Frank Clark, but what if Clark’s sack production has less to do with him having “lost it”, and more to do with playing the role his DC has assigned him?
Now I can’t speak for anyone else, but if that’s the case, I’d rather be having him do his actual job rather than chasing some sack total number. And if sacks are part of the incentive pay in his contract, he’s literally cutting that part of the pay out in order to do so. I think that on both sides of the ball this team is so different from how the rest of the league plays that traditional stats fall apart for some things, but few if any seem to have noticed it.
I’m of the belief that in certain games, it is how he’s being schemed, especially when the QB is mobile, in which he needs to act as a spy. Do I wish he has more sacks? Absolutely. But I do think it’s not entirely on him.
I’m sure lack of production on the IDL is a big contributor to his own numbers. I bet the scheme was not just a mobile QB, but good run and screen games that could do that too. Bills, Ravens, Saints, Texans, Panthers, and Raiders all had either good run games or mobile QBs or both.
I may have missed it
But I have not seen a lot of complaining from us on the Chiefs run Defense this year.
Now in my mind the Chiefs would welcome most enemy teams to run the ball
analytics and all say that passing makes more Yards per play than running
Some wild stat which I might be wrong on
the Chiefs are averaging 5 points per Offensive drive….
by all means kick a FG opponent, you just lost 2 points to Mahomes and the Chiefs
When you play with a lead, run defense isn’t tested much
truth
yanno what I think? just a hunch here, but I honestly think these dudes, player or coaches or anyone else, really gives a shit about stats and numbers EXCEPT the scoreboard at the end of the game … it’s all about winning individual match-ups, winning the one-on-ones each and every time (to the maximum degree possible) on every single play, both sides, all game long, even the tiny things, in the trenches and on the routes … do the “math” and if your team wins more individual match-ups than the over team, thee’s a higher likelihood of your team scoring more points, and that means winning the game, and that’s what it’s all about … the rest will take care of itself
and of course the rubbing the other teams nose in it while you are doing it!!!!
Pretty much my thought. With this team, the only thing that matters is Ws and Ls, the rest is gravy. Both sides of the ball, too.
SBs pay rather well, to boot, and wearing a Ring or two doesn’t hurt one’s post-career prospects a bit.
Maybe the Chiefs players need to put a Super Bowl incentive into their contracts?
I do think you are onto something though, Frank Clark seems to get sacks when it is time to get sacks at the end of the game when we are trying to sweep the Leg and finish em.
One thing that caught my eye this season was what appeared to be a particular emphasis on batted balls by the OL. This makes some sense, since you don’t need to “win” against your guy to succeed on that, so you can be ready to act faster than getting to the QB. As far as statistics go, sacks may be losing some value to that sort of strategy. Do you want sacks, which are harder to get, or batted balls, which are a lot easier to come by?
Then there’s the consideration that the rushers don’t keep playing their ‘A’ game throughout the game, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t spend that time setting their guy up for the opportunity to bring the heat when it really matters. The defenders pretty much have no idea what the rush plans will be, once they actuallt start going for sacks.
Maybe the Chiefs players need to put a Super Bowl incentive into their contracts?
Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeve!
FYI: they have that already … SB’s pay quite well, I can assure you
Absolutely. There seem to be alot of wrinkles to this defense regarding DEs, and simply rushing the passer is not the end all be all. The fact that he can dominate at will in games where he’s been turned loose seems to give your observation quite a bit of weight.
I think when these guys play hundreds of snaps a year people need to change their mindset in thinking youre only good if you get a sack in 10 or so of them. Theres so much more to defense then 10 sacks a year
hear! hear! I heartily approve n agree n shit like that …
FYI: I was thinking a bit ago (always dangerous) about KC almost always playing from behind in playoffs, and I wondered about “why” that would be … is Spags basically doing a “Read & React” first Defensive series to see WTF opposition is doing and then adjusts the D accordingly? just thinking out loud that it would make a lot of sense to acall some “basic shit” early, see what THEY do to how WE line in base, and THEN play a game of “gotcha!” … maybe?
I guess sorta
But the Chiefs playing from behind is usually cause we had some major screw-ups from the Special teams or turnovers early
hey, everyone’s human … until it’s a Madden Video
Considering that with Mahomes under center, if the Chiefs score first, they’re 23-5. When the opponent scores first, they’re 21-4. I think Ups sees the same thing I see. Nothing fancy on either side until they figure out what the other team’s doing, then adjusting on the fly to keep things at worst close. Burn a quarter that way, see how they try to adjust to the changes, and then after the half, let’em have it.
Also, I’m convinced that Mahomes has basically become Reid’s eyes on the field, since with perfect memory he can describe things well and provide a lot of details that can’t be seen from the sideline or the press box. That allows for superior in-game adjustments on the offense’s side. I doubt that when Reid and Pat huddle up over the pad they’re talking about Animal Crossing, they’re taking observations, planning and plotting. And look at Kelce, Pat’s got a definite knack for getting inside his teammates’ heads, so why wouldn’t he be the same way with his coach?
he can describe things well and provide a lot of details that can’t be seen from the sideline or the press box
don’t discount the press box view, also (maybe more importantly) Kelce, Hill & Co can input as well (along with Mahomes)
Oh, I’m not, not at all, but every team has that, in one form or fashion. But the view from where the action is isn’t the same thing, and my guess is that most coaches can’t “see through the QB’s eyes” anywhere close to what Pat and Andy have going on. He sees details that aren’t obvious from any other vantage.
As for the guys you mentioned, I’m not discounting them, either, it’s just my focus was on 2:15PM.
Isn’t it great to have a DC who can actually make adjustments during a game.
Early Tampa, FL weather:
73 high | 56 low 8 mph wind
Vegas:
Chiefs a 3.5 point fav
Total points 57.5
I reached out to my boy in Broncos front office to ask if any Broncos players will be selling tickets to SB. IF…..I score tickets. I’ll stay with an EX Girlfriend in Tampa 🙂
niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice! good luck, Brother …
oh, those burnt ends … ? 😉
my boys chewed up my bbq stash, after the game 🙁 Since no places were opened after game
it’s all good … hope they enjoyed it!
Was that the burnt ends you were referring to? I was going in a different direction.
