Tuesday Night O/T: The Bears weren’t the only ones to pass on Mahomes

Arrowhead Guys talk about anything.

The Bears get a lot of crap for picking Trubisky over Mahomes in 2017, and rightfully so. Picking a bust over an elite quarterback is bad enough as it is, but to trading up one spot to do so is as bad as it gets. It says that the Bears thought Trubisky was so far above Mahomes that they didn’t want to run the risk of having to settle for Mahomes.

But for some reason the other 9 teams who passed on Mahomes have gotten a pass. The 49ers, Jaguars, Titans, and Bengals also drafted players who aren’t exactly filling up their trophy cases with awards, and they all could have used Mahomes just as much the Bears, so why do they get a pass? But even the Browns, Jets, Chargers, Panthers and Bills should get criticism for passing on Mahomes despite getting quality players. It doesn’t matter how good those guys are, nothing can replace an elite quarterback, and all of those teams would be better off right now with Mahomes on their roster rather than the guy they got.

So why are the Bears the only ones who get that criticism?

I imagine so, just as I imagine the finger-pointing blame game has already commenced. Saw it mentioned on Twitter but I don’t need the grief. I spent much of my day catching up on judicial news from lawyers’ sites. I find that much more enlightening as to what’s going on than the breathlessly-provocative stories of the mainstream media. “Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.

Someone pointed out that it was possibly a “flour burst”, like a silo fire exploding. I thoujgt HE for sure with the shockwave and mushroom, but it does look like fireworkss going off at the bottom.

While I won’t bother with trying to evaluate the blast, Mythbusters and many others have demonstrated the destructive capacity of fuel-air explosions, as well as the silos you mentioned are a known factor. But jumping from provacative story to provocative story as the press roll them out is more emotional manipulation than I care to endure.

I’m pretty sure the Bears get so much crap for picking Trubisky because they made him the first QB drafted, while Mahomes and Watson both went after him. That and Trubisky just sucks.

BleedingRedAndGold
Reply to  kcfreak725
08/04/2020 8:14 pm

I think less so for that and moreso because they traded up to get that top spot from a team that wasn’t really interested in him. If they’d picked him #2 instead, while there would still be mockery, I don’t think it would be as intense.

Just a guess, but Mahomes’ mild taunt of the Bears included that element, since KC traded up, what was it, 17 spots, to get him. The Bears, OTOH moved up one, gave up a bunch for it for a lesser rate of return.

kcfreak725

Well I can say that trading up one spot to pick him was idiotic. The 49ers certainly weren’t gonna take him, so I don’t know what made them do that. They gotta be kicking themselves right now.

BleedingRedAndGold

Exactly. Making a bad pick is one thing, there have been plenty of #1s who were busts, but trading up to draft a bust is compounding the error if it goes wrong. Good thing Veach listened to Willie Davis (IIRC) and took a close look at St. Patrick and then lobbied hard for him.

Dorsey executed an excellent trade in the draft, no doubt about it, but he wasn’t all-in early. The talent evaluation was primarily by Veach and the scouting department.

In some ways taking Trubisky over Watson was more egregious. You could argue that Mahomes had more bust potential. Watson was a pretty sure bet. Trubisky was just… well I dont get that pick.

Bit of an interesting story behind that. In the initial publication (I read the one in the church library as a kid) the Oopa Loompas were African pygmies. On the initial sight of them one of the “lucky few” asked “Are they made of chocolate?”, but when someone told him that such a characterization could be problematic in the American publication he retconned that out, and I don’t blame him a bit.

However, that left the original film producers with a problem, because Oompa Loompas were supposed to not just be short, but recognizably exotic, so a bunch of white little people in funny clothes wouldn’t cut it. Orange skin and green hair would have to do for a movie production that was strapped for cash from the get-go.

As do the original songs as published in the book. I know that was a major irritation with Dahl WRT WWatCF, that they didn’t convert them to their whole songs the way CatCF did, but IMO (and no slight to Deep Roy here, unless he did the arrangements) they lost a lot of the book version’s impact.

I’m not sure any more if Wilder actually followed the tunnel chant verbatim, but I do know it at least heavily lifted from it. But all that said the second version fell on its face for the portrayal of Wonka. How much of that blame falls on Depp I can’t say, but I doubt the backstory they made up for him was on him, as he was barely involved in that aspect at all. But that said, Depp’s portrayal of Wonka is wholly at odds with the book version. Wilder’s was much closer.

I recently rewatched the Depp version a couple weeks ago. The kids and their parents were wholly unlikable. Depp was okay. But there was always a sense of fun and childlike wonder in the original, whereas the reimagining seemed more like a horror movie made for children.

And the mad genius that was Wonka instead was relegated to a psychological wreck, by and large. The whole aspect of Schicklegruber, et al. was abandoned because corporate espionage and consumer exploitation are controversial?

Remember, they were described as the sort who built pinball machines that would tilt if you breathed on them too hard. So all they could manage was cheap knock-offs that would undercut the premium stuff Wonka produced.

I agree that the OG was more childlike wonderment, but the Tim Burton’s twisted darkness was closer to the book. That’s not to say it was an exact recreation, but Dahl has a dark side to his books.

Depp’s was arguably darker (ever looked up what snozzberries were, though?), but instead of being a mad genius all that was really every displayed on-screen was a psychological wreck with little humanity.

Basically my objection here is the same as Jackson’s decision to make Gandalf reluctant to go through Moria, instead of advocating for it from the outset. Why, so he can have a non-canon magical duel with Saruman again? It significantly altered the character of Gandalf, in my view.

Some got banned for girls. some got banned for Asians. some got banned for anime (no idea who that fellow might be). some got banned for cracking jokes about the leadership. the list goes on and any time we reached out to the leadership, we got extremely vague answers if they chose to respond at all.

everyone knows that draft picks are impossible to get 100% right 99% of the time for 98% of the people … sure Da Bears done missed out on a good thing, and their route wasn’t only wrong, it was REALLY wrong in 20/20 hindsight (which 174% of the people have 725% of the time {and it’s worth noting here, as has been done before on this blog, that 4/3rds of all people can’t do math})

so yeah, we got lucky … hoo boy, for the … no, I won’t say “first time in a long time” because we (Chiefs fans) have BEEN lucky for YEARS: ok, so a little while between SB wins, but still … all the teams, all the players and coaches, all the games and plays, the highs and yes, the lows at times … wouldn’t trade ’em for the world

Yes, defund the police, but not by cutting their budgets and nothing else. Take psych case calls, because the police are not trained to deal with such and their actions are oft inappropriate. Take that part away and use it to fund mental health specialists to go out and handle such.

Same with suicide. As the saying goes, ‘feel like committing suicide? call 911, the police will be happy to help with that’. “Suicide by Cop” happens because the police enable it, and they tend to treat such things as a hostage situation where the perp and vic are one and the same. Bizarre.

Worked well in Dallas. Less police time wasted on paperwork, safer all around for everyone, police included, far fewer unneccessay arrests. Hope that program is still in place, because a cop who treats mental health cases as violent, drug-addled criminals simply isn’t qualified for that duty.

Not to mention that before too long they are going to lose all those safe, easy, and often racially biased pot busts. With far fewer arrests it’s gonna be hard to justify their contract demands. Oughta be a law passed that says that preferential treatment of police when they kill cannot be part of any police contract, but the real nightmare’s gonna be dealing with all the prosecutors who tolerate or even encourage misconduct and participate in it themselves.

Yeah, the areas where the protections of the Bill of Rights have been reduced need even fewer protections. Police can force those violent minorities to behave by inflicting ever more violence. You’ve been preaching that position for a while now, and your reply indicates that you think “psychos” like me deserve whatever the police dish out.

But then, you favor the police more than you do that icky, nasty Bill of Rights that interferes with them “teaching them respect for the law police officer on the scene”. Discrimination and abuse do not teach respect. Street gangs do similar things so they, too can feel “respected”. But, since you hav e already attempted to divert the discussion to bolster your pro-cop fetish rather than consider any of my concerns seriously, I’m dropping this discussion as unproductive. Peddle your slogans elsewhere, I shall not participate.

My newly wed wife (got married in Florida 3 weeks ago cause f rona and f the mandates) is an RN and volunteer EMT and they had a mental case that got killed by the cops after a full day standoff. The guy was messed up and needed help, not 3 bullets in his chest and head. I’m all for the police but when they’re trained to take out people so efficiently, it’s not always going to go well in crazy situations that require more tact.

*Sign* I never claimed that there wouldn’t be any knuckleheads at all, so pointing out an exception here and there doesn’t invalidate my position a bit.

Now, find me something saying that a large group of players went out partying in bars and/or casinos, and I’ll admit I was wrong. What will it take for you to do the same? I’m not challenging you socially here, just asking under what circumstances you’ll admit your position has been likewise invalidated. If you can’t figure that out you don’t have a position to speak of.

This may be the internet, but I won’t indulge in internet-arguing such as went on during the Smith Wars, where nit-picking the opposition’s words for something to exploit and failing that changing the topic to a different position to attack from was the rule of the day. I saw what came of that: Nobody won, everyone lost, and a scant few enjoyed all the conflict and feel-goods that came from the “zingers” they got in as “moral victories”. In the long run those few made almost everyone else a little more miserable at having to endure it all.

It just puts Patrick in excellent company. Joe Montana and Tom Brady come to mind. How many teams missed these two also?

Why?
Because of selfish knuckleheads like this

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8591619/Las-Vegas-gambler-REMOVED-casino-went-without-wearing-mask.html

Again, Canada issues up to $2,000 tix – not a warning for not wearing mask (117k cases).

Mexico $40 to $400 tix and/or 36 hours in jail (443k cases in the Country, as of today). Entire country of MX going to remote school….for entire school year

But, here…
a warning for not wearing mask = closing in on 5 million cases & more to come.
(face slap)

You’re comparing the US vs Canada and Mexico. US population is approx 3 times Mexico and 10 times Canada, so that makes the # of cases somewhat closer. If you look at a population density map, you will see the US has waaaaaay more dense population clusters than Canada and Mexico. Plus, do you know how many test are being performed and under what circumstance they perform them?. Not that I don’t think wearing a mask isn’t important, but I dislike it when the only stat quoted in an argument is # of cases.

/Rant ended.

But 5 million cases & growing?

All other counties that have – hammered down on knuckleheads. Not just given warning

2nd wave is coming since knuckleheads- no habla. People follow rules when heavy $$ fines are given

I would also counter argue that the numbers continue to explode even with a larger percentage of the population wearing masks.

I still think the masks don’t do that much helping, outside making the people feel like we are doing something.

Just think if the doctors came out and said there is no avoiding it. You may get it. You may die from it. But there is nothing we can currently do to help.

People could go bunker mentality. Back to hoarding. Stop going to work. Possible violence towards neighbors. Economy collapses.

The purpose of masking is to prevent you from transmitting it more than you catching it. One can be contagious before the symptoms kick in, not to mention the asymptomatic cases.

Anti-maskers, like anti-vaxxers, are arguing they have the right to infect others. Yeah, your right to spread diseases ends at my nose. Mask up, it’s not perfect, but it does help, unlike the aforementioned idiots.

No anti maskers are not like anti vaxxers…although they both have an argument against mandates and personal liberties… the mask is useless. It still comes down to hygiene. Let’s start executing people for not washing their hands after using the bathroom (which is gross). Where does it end? You can’t hide from all exposure. It has to run its course.

how many of those cases are active? You see 5 million and assume there are 5 million sick. But that includes recoveries, active cases, deaths. So it isn’t ” 5 million”active cases of Covid

just saying. 5 million cases is misleading because the (false ) assumption is that it means there are currently that many presently sick which isn’t the case

right but what does that have to do with the 5 million figure? I’m no math whizz , but 160 k out of 5 million isn’t a super high number. And that is just the cases they got. The CDC says we could have 25 times the case rate

and we have a ”vaccine” for the flu that is widely available and free in many places and we still routinely get 80k plus dead. So how deadly would the flu be if there was no flu shot?

look, you can live in fear over this all you want. That is your right. Me? I’m not going to greatly alter my lifestyle for a virus that has a 1% mortality rate in my demographic. I’m just not. Now, I take precautions. I wear a mask in most places now and I avoid crowds, bars and Restaurants (then again I did all that before this all hit so nothing changed there)

Sorry but I’m putting my money on the human immune system. Let the young create herd immunity. We know that natural exposure is more effective than artificial (vaccine) exposure in creating herd immunity. But you can try the experimental vaccine that Fauchi has invested in. Also we still haven’t even reached H1N1 levels of deaths. What is it 150k right now.

I see these countries as taking away liberties and being stupid. The masks have no data showing they are any more effective.

It’s not mandated in my state. I don’t have to do anything. But you go ahead and keep panicking over the misleading numbers. You wear your mask if it makes you feel better. I’m putting my money on my immune system because it’s strong.

I’d just encourage people to stop stressing so much because THAT does weaken your immune system and make a difference. Talk about Mahomes and our first super bowl in 5 decades. Lighten up and enjoy life.

Lighten up and enjoy life

oh, I do enjoy life … and as for “lighten up” well, Dude, you have no idea who you’re dealing with here … I was once given a ticket by a physics court for being in violation of the law of gravity

of course, your cotton-candy unicorn view of a world where everything is all peachy-keen and tangerine is a bit simplistic and off-the-mark … I mean let’s face it: life would be more enjoyable if it weren’t for this little “pandemic” thing, like going to baseball / football games, to concerts, movies and out to dinner … yes I realize that in the end we all have to die, but do you really think that just ignoring it will like somehow magical unicorn rainbow make it go away? or do you simply not give a phuque about anyone else except yourself?
