Thursday Night OT: There Can Be Only One

AG now has a game night, sorta. Trivia time, come check it out!

Hello and welcome to Trivia Thursday.  I am your host, The ForeverRanger.  This week’s topic is my favorite movie of all time, and truthfully the title should have given it away.  Yes folks we are talking about The Highlander.

The rules are simple.  I will post questions, and you must try and answer them.  To try and prevent cheating, you must put your answers in a spoiler, the [+] when you post a comment.  Also, please don’t use Google if you can help it.  Let’s begin.

  1. What is Juan Sanchez Villalobos-Ramirez’s nationality?
  2. Queen did the soundtrack for the movie but the music video for Princes of the Universe is missing a vital part of Queen’s identity.  What is it?
  3. Clancy Brown (Kurgan) played which DC villain in an animated show?
  4. What did Connor “win” when he became the last Immortal standing?  Doesn’t have to be exact as long as you get the gist.
  5. BONUS:  Christopher Lambert once played what popular video game character?

I don’t really see where we can save much money outside of:

  • Trading Chris Jones
  • Cutting Hitchens (probably has to happen)
  • Extending Fisher (risky since he’s currently injured)
  • Extending Schwartz (risky since he’s injured, older than Fisher, and there’s not as much money to save)
  • Converting Frank Clark’s salary to pro-rated bonus. This would make getting away from him in his last or second last year unlikely.
  • Cutting OR extending Mathieu

You might not be able to see it, but you don’t have enough information to preclude money being saved without any of these things being done. Which isn’t to say that none of them will happen, but that there are options you can’t see. Neither can I, but I’m casting a much wider net when it comes to potential inputs we can’t see.

One note I will make is that a Hitches cut seems unlikely to me. Yes, yes, I know that fans hated the trade and the wage, then raged when he didn’t perform well in Sutton’s (extremely successful, for sarcasm’s sake) scheme or in the first half of Spags’ first year here. Which, some may have noticed, generated bad stats for about everyone on the D. That said, I’ve seen comments from film analysts I trust who say that Hitchens was a real asset at Mike in 2020, sort of the Maslowski effect. Not as athletic as everyone would like, but smart enough to make the most of what he does have. He certainly handled the green-dot duties well, and was solid in his run fits.

Could he be replaced with an upgrade at reasonable cost? Well, yes to the first and maybe to the second, and if both are true, then yes, please. But it’s a mistake, and I’m talking generalities here to let biases of the past affect evaluation in the present. 2020, as flawed as the statistical record may be, was a good year for Hitch, and a better indicator of his value to the team going forward than his bad reputation says about him.

Interesting

https://www.si.com/nfl/2021/02/18/draft-primer-strongest-positions-qb-market-free-agency-matchmaker

Wide Receiver: Because of the way the game is evolving at the college and high school levels, and how much 7-on-7 is being played, a lot of the sport’s best athletes are ending up being wideouts, and those wideouts are getting a lot of reps. As such, where last year’s receiver group was considered historic, this year’s is just about as good.

Cornerback: There may not be a Jalen Ramsey or Marshon Lattimore physically, but one scout said that the “top-to-bottom depth” of the class is as good as it’s been in a while. Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley, Alabama’s Patrick Surtain and South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn headline the group, but there’s good competition for draft position behind them as well.

Offensive line: The NFL is always looking for offensive line help, and there’ll be plenty available come April. “It’s probably a little more top-heavy than it is deep,” says one college scouting director. “But that’s always the case. There’s no such thing as a deep offensive line class.”

Outside of that, the interior defensive line group has some interesting names, and strength at the top. And the inside linebacker positions has athletes, though the guys at the top are a little undersized and may be more scheme-specific.
As for weak spots, it looks like—outside of Florida freak show Kyle Pitts—the tight end position is pretty barren in 2021, and if it seems like we’ve had a bunch of years where that’s been the case with tight ends, well, that should illustrate how hard it is to find really good ones.

Wow, Dead money in Philadelphia is probably not this huge every year

1. Carson Wentz, Eagles- $33.82 million/18.79% of 2021 cap
This is the new addition just today to the lit and it is a whopper. This was essentially the same as the Jared Goff contract situation except the Eagles were far more aggressive on using Wentz for cap relief. Wentz was paid a $16.4 million signing bonus in 2019 and a $30 million option bonus in 2020 only to be benched at the end of the 2020 year. Just today the report came out that he will be traded to the Colts in return for a 3rd and 2nd round pick next year that could increase to a 1st rounder depending on how he plays. The numbers here are nuts. The next closest player we had a record of was Aikman at 14.9% and even if the cap was normal this year Wentz’ dead money would represent about 16% of the salary cap. As I mentioned above it took nearly 20 years to go from $10 to $20 million in dead money and the jump from $20 to $30 million only took a year due to Wentz. My assumption is that this number will hold for quite some time given the way teams now approach the salary cap and it may fundamentally change the way some extensions are approached in the future.

I’m not going to go ga-ga over cap percentages being high in 2021, not with the lower cap situation inflating that number.

That’s not on you, Steve, I’m talking about the bozo who decided to make a big deal about it like it’s a real record-setter, somehow. Nope, nope, and likewise nope. That’s a statistic out of context he’s making hay over, not anything relevant.

Steelers GM Kevin Colbert said he has to “look at this current [cap] situation” when asked about Ben Roethlisberger being the 2021 starting quarterback. In a Wednesday press conference, Colbert had multiple chances to endorse Roethlisberger as his 2021 starting quarterback but repeatedly dodged questions. “As we sit here today, Ben is a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Colbert continued. “What type of team can he anticipate being around him if we decide we can move forward together?” Roethlisberger comes with a $41.2 million cap hit if no contract adjustments are made this offseason. Teams don’t like to end Hall of Fame careers with a sour taste, but Pittsburgh could cut Roethlisberger and save $19 million against the cap. Because the Steelers are $30 million over the cap, Colbert will have to make some very tough decisions in the next few weeks ahead of free agency. Roethlisberger tentatively remains the favorite to be the 2021 starter, but it’s not a lock after the deliberate word choice by an experienced general manager.

The Athletic’s Connor Hughes doesn’t expect the Jets to re-sign impending free agent Breshad Perriman.Still just 27, Perriman landed a one-year deal with the Jets last offseason following his final-month breakout with the Bucs. Injuries became normal for Perriman with Gang Green, as he battled issues with both ankles from the start of the year. He played in 12 games, posting a 30-505-3 line but averaged a robust 16.8 yards per catch. In a perfect world, Perriman is a deep-threat No. 3 or 4 wideout on a good team, not the top outside weapon. The Jets have a whole lot of holes to fill on offense.

Gator Bait!!

Falcons released DE Allen Bailey. The move saves the Falcons $4.5 million against the cap. He and DB Ricardo Allen were both obvious cap casualties with Atlanta entering the offseason 30th in cap space. Bailey, 34, will be settling for a backup job if he chooses to continue playing. He spent eight years with the Chiefs before playing his last two in Atlanta.

If his physicals were close to when he left us, I think I would, depending on what that minimum looked like. If he came back for minimum money I’d say he came back intending to work and play hard in his role.

After all, he got paid, so at minimum it wouldn’t be about the money, it’d be about success.

Indy Star’s Jim Ayello reports the Colts received a “pretty firm not available” from the Raiders when checking in on Derek Carr. Before they traded for Carson Wentz, the Colts called the Raiders about Carr, who has been in the midst of trade discussions for seasons. While both are theoretically on the trade block, it’s clear that the Raiders want to trade Marcus Mariota, not Carr this offseason. Analytically, Carr was a top-12 passer last season and has cap hits of just $22.1 million and $19.9 million over the next two years. A team will have to blow the Raiders away with an offer for Carr to be dealt.

Cap number risesThe NFL informed clubs Thursday that the 2021 salary cap floor has been raised from $175 million to $180 million. That’s not the final number, though that should be coming by March 8, I’m told. The expectation around the league has been that the cap will be set somewhere in the low $180s with the potential to reach $185 million.
The lower cap number has meant the league’s middle class will be expanding this offseason. If you’re not a star player or fringe Pro Bowler, don’t expect a big payday come mid-March.

They’d also be in a rather costly position as Wentz is not coming to Indianapolis on the cheap, owning cap hits of $22 million or more through 2024.

That’s Carr’s cap hit for the next two years, basically. Wentz’ record in Philly wasn’t good, but if he can return to a peak form of himself from the past in Indy’s scheme, just how much better will Carr still be over that?

I did not know this. I think that puts a little more weight on my supposition that Wentz might improve in Indy.

If he can play at Carr level for Reich, then they got a good deal, contract-wise. And if he does, I’d expect Indy to do better at that level of QB play than the circus in the Roomba has. That said, I doubt they’d be particularly difficult for us to beat in the playoffs, even if that came to pass.

They no longer have a curse working in their favor, after all.
