Thursday Night Open Thread: Jason Kelce clears the air on how to pronounce their last name

From KMBC:

Jason Kelce has an answer — and a full explanation. But it’s not as cut-and-dry as you’d think.

The Philadelphia Kelce called into the 94WIP Midday Show with Joe DeCamara and Jon Ritchie unprompted yesterday to set the record straight on his, and his brother’s, name.

“You got it right. It’s Kel-see,” Jason Kelce told 94WIP. “So I’ll give you the story behind why my brother said that. My brother and I have gone by Kel-see our entire lives.”

The name with multiple pronunciations is actually a family debate.

“I still remember my dad answering the phone as Ed Kel-see all growing up when he was on work calls and everything. But we have a really small family. We don’t have any first cousins. Somehow we got so disconnected with that side and my dad at some point, when he was working at the Steel mills in Cleveland, Ohio, got tired of correcting everyone who was calling him Kel-see,” Jason Kelce explained.

Apparently the correct, the standard pronunciation is Kelse, which the rest of my family goes by. So my dad, out of pure laziness, completely changed his last name. For some reason he decided to change it and that’s what we’ve gone by our whole lives.

“We’ve gotten plenty of messages and texts since becoming NFL players from extended family members all over the world that have told us, ‘You’re pronouncing the name wrong!’ I prefer Kel-see because that’s what I’ve gone by my entire life.”

I’ve been disturbed recently by the call from many candidates (and several sitting members) to “return” or install “gods law” to our nation.
Something the founders were explicitly against.
The Golden Rule, fine, beyond that which god, and which rules?
The one’s pushing for this decry Shria Law and claim a moral high ground…
Freedom of religion =freedom from religion…I’m done for now, feel free to ignore.

Theocracy is the absolute worst possible form of government. It justifies abuses that are beyond the pale. Spanish Inquisition, Taliban controlled Afghanistan (which is coming back), I wish we had never gotten involved in that cesspool, but once in, you just cant get out without serious repurcussions

99.8 survivable (unknown what % will have long term/permanent damage), 99.5 of current deaths are unvaxed.
We let the variants get a toehold, they will take the foot.

It’s sad but you can’t force people to get the vaccine. The reason we know this is because if they could they would. If adults die tough s… The kids are the concern.

Active military have been compelled to take vaxes for many decades, often as part of studies. (Can’t just quit to avoid consequences for non-compliance).
Children have been required to be vaxed for many things for school as well.
Vaxes have been required to guarantee re-entry USA when traveling to certain parts of the world.
Can’t force this one on adults (minus military, part of the contract) here, but not getting one can and should be dis-incentivized (sic), your free to not get it, a cruise ship is free to deny boarding. Blade cuts both ways.

We all need a refresher on the “social contract”.

Baffling. Three of those teams are predicted to be Superbowl dark horses, and they are putting that in jeopardy by not getting the vaccine.

I am pretty politically conservative, but I don’t get the apprehension to the vaccine. It was developed under the Trump administration and I would be willing to bet the vaccination rate would be better if he were still in office. But somehow people have turned this into a party lines item, and they are willing to risk their lives for a political system that doesn’t give a shit about the people that vote for them.

Let’s make an example that has no political connotations.

You are in an apartment fire on the third floor. Your options are do nothing and hope the fire doesn’t hurt you. Or jump out the window to get away from the fire. You may get hurt in the fall, but more than likely you will be okay. Almost everyone in the world would take the unknown result of jumping vs. just waiting it out.

Covid is the apartment fire and the vaccine is the jump. I just don’t understand.

I really wish Biden would create a joint PSA with Trump praising him on getting the vaccine made, and Trump urging everyone to get it.

I know it will never happen, but that is the best chance to bridge the divide.

His pre-orders got the pharms to fast track production (Phizer did not participate) but they were under development well before Warp Speed
But that up-front money did get them out the door, I’ll give him that.
Not publicizing his own vax is malfeasance.

I’ll never get that. By all normalcy, the Dem leaning folks should be the ones not wanting to get the jab because its the “Trump” jab. Somehow that shit got all turned around and I still have exactly no idea how the fuck they did it. You can NEVER be 100% certain of long term effects of, quite literally, ANY medical treatment or drug or whatever. But we do have a pretty extensive history with vaccines, and the simple fact is, the incidence of any side effect of any significance is exceedingly low. Once again, nothing medical is ever 100% safe, but the risk associated with vaccination is miniscule compared to the diseases they prevent. 350 million doses of coronavirus vaccine given and we have seen serious reactions in less than 1 in 500,000 vaccinated people. Not getting the shot is just plain stupid unless you have a known previous reaction to a vaccination. And its a very very small percentage of people that do.

Because he said it would happen before anyone knew or was sure it would work. Once initial trials/studies showed effectiveness, they said yes this actually could work and actively advanced it.
I was not going to take his word over the entire medical community,
The dude lied unnecessarily about hurricanes, we were supposed to believe him about this.
New data = new conclusions.
