Both football’s wouldn’t be what they are today in the US were it not for Lamar. Clark was a the captain of SMU’s soccer team back in the day.

Nothing like watching the (hopefully last) NBA finals game while doing my Chinese and Spanish lessons on Pimsleur..

I’ve been going so hard on Pimsleur that I had a freaking dream about it last night.

I’m officially back from Denver. In exchange for taking care of my sister’s pets for a week and carrying down a chest of drawers she sold on craigslist, she gave me a fairly substantial Doordash gift card, so she’ll be buying my lunch for the next couple of weeks.

I may actually have to go back in a couple weeks to act as muscle to help as her ex removes her shit from her house to make sure the ex doesn’t do anything, but nothing solidified there. Otherwise my next trip will be a hopefully month-long stay in Loredo to try and get a bit of Spanish immersion. I was originally focusing in on driving down over the 4th of July weekend, but I may have to be in Denver instead, so I guess I’ll have to kep playing that one by ear.

If anybody knows any good shit to do in Loredo (or preferably on the Mexico side in Nuevo Loredo) I’m open to suggestions.

The problem is that my company is picky about me working outside the US, and apparently every border city is dangerous on the Mexican side, so in terms of going there repeatedly over an extended period I don’t have much choice.

But I picked Loredo because it’s apparently one of the most Spanish speaking cities in the US, so I’d hopefully get a lot of practice without having to cross the border.

OVERALL RISK : HIGH. Nuevo Laredo is not a safe place enough. In general, tourists are advised to avoid this city. Disassembling drug cartels and weak police activity in the city makes the city uncomfortable for travelers

My one and only time crossing the southern border:

The VERY FIRST thing I saw was a woman dressed in robes like the Virgin Mary, carrying a newborn baby, laying underneath a car with no wheels on cinder blocks, next to a 3-legged dog.

  1. Later that night, I was nearly assaulted with dudes trying to pour rubbing alcohol down my throat. I had to strong-arm them into leaving me alone.
  2. My buddy was nearly arrested for peeing in an alley, thankfully his expensive watch got him out of it.
  3. Other buddy got separated and chased by a hooker and her gang, forcing him to break into a car he said was his in order to get his wallet. Wasn’t his car and he ran to the border as fast as he could.
  4. Other buddy put his card in ATM. Someone behind him made a distraction, causing him to turn around. He then heard someone quickly touch buttons on the ATM. He then noticed his PIN code displayed on the screen, so cancelled the transaction. The card was ejected… but it wasn’t his… it was a blank, black card. He had to immediately call his bank.

So yeah, Mexico isn’t the best place for a white guy to be without friends. Helps a lot to have local friends.

I have been meaning to get in touch with you about this. I have a lot of good resources for learning Spanish – free stuff you won’t find on DuoLingo/Mango/YouTube. And this is even better in that you don’t have to sign up for it.

BRaG has my email address (but knows I’m bad about checking it), so if you’re interested let me know and I can pass along these resources.

What sort of Spanish do you want to learn? Colombian? Mexican? Argentinian? They’re all mutually intelligible (unlike some Arabic dialects which are very, very bizarre) but differ somewhat.

Mrs. Nasrani is a native Spanish speaker as well.

Right now I’m doing Pimsleur (the best language learning method I’ve tried) and a bit of Duolingo in between, but soon I’m going to start lessons to practice conversations. I’d prefer Mexican if any, but definitely South American and not Spain.

I’m always interested in more ideas for stuff. I have your email (I’m sure I’ve emailed you before), so I’ll hit you up.

Thanks. I’m not sure how the stuff I use (for Arabic, but from the same pool of resources) compares to Pimsleur, but I’ve worked with Arabic in some capacity since 2006 so it can’t be all bad. Keeps the bills paid and such. Though nothing beats immersion – you’ll be surprised what you can learn when you have to survive.

I know that it features Colombian as well as Mexican. I’m sure the others are there (except the Spanish of Spain), so you should have plenty of stuff to sink your teeth into.

I’ll keep an eye out for your email, and any from BRaG that I’ve likely missed due to being a bad friend.

from pff

25. KANSAS CITY CHIEFSChris Jones has been a force for the Chiefs since he was drafted in 2016. He ranks second at the position in PFF’s WAR metric over the last six seasons, trailing only Aaron Donald among players who have played the vast majority of their snaps on the interior.
However, Jones hasn’t gotten much help from his teammates on the edge in recent years. Kansas City’s edge defenders collectively rank 28th in PFF grade since 2020. That puts a lot of pressure on rookie George Karlaftis to hit the ground running, particularly after letting Melvin Ingram III leave for Miami in free agency.
