The Prodigal Drunk has returned …
I don’t know whether I should apologize for my absence last week or say “you’re welcome,” but as surely none of you noticed, I had to go M.I.A. for some mental health issues — those issues being that I have decided to quit smoking, and the first 7 days were tougher to get through than a season of Grey’s Anatomy (truly horrible stuff).
However, I made it out of the storm with zero casualties and only one spiritually-scarred cat who decided to walk under my feet all throughout Day Four. No physical harm was done to the feline, but he did bear witness to some of the more outrageous strings of swear words to have ever left my lips.
Anyway, speaking of smoking …
Barbecue Weather Is Upon Us
After what seems like the Groundhog’s Day version of winter, warmer temperatures are migrating back into town and with it, the sweet, delicious smell of springtime in Kansas City. As long as you’re not driving past Front Street on I-435 or anywhere near northern Fairfax, you are sure to be inundated with the aroma of backyard barbecues as far as the nose can smell.
The above tweet is a notification for the closest upcoming BBQ Contest I can find at the moment — although Tony probably knows of some others — and if you follow this link you’ll see a calendar of (I think) all the scheduled competitions to follow.
A tasty tradition that I’ll never pass up.

Writer’s Note: Step off my toes, Tony, that’s comment section material. Geez …
Featured Artist: Lindsay Wanner
Listen, if you don’t think this is cool as all hell, I’m not sure your eyes work properly:
St. Louis artist Lindsay Wanner uses tangible objects such as CD’s, vinyl, and other physical elements as her medium to create some truly awesome pieces. The above Mahomes work is (obviously) my favorite, but she covers a wide variety …
CD’s and other musical attributes not your wheel house? Not a problem — Lindsay has your sports fix covered …
There are more examples of her awesome work than I have space to post it up, so be sure and check out her website for everything she has to offer — and if you commission a Mahomes piece, enter the promo code “FREEFORDAVE” and you can pay twice the amount so that I get one too!
College Basketball Is Headed To Kansas City
So, I hear that some of you enjoy this sort of thing:
Admittedly, I know more about Competitive Pre-Historic Taxidermy than I do about college basketball, but it is pretty nice to see Kansas City get (what I’m told are) some of the premier match-ups in the upcoming … uh, match-ups. I never root for Kansas anything, and Kentucky is for horse racing and chicken, so I’m gonna go ahead and root for North Carolina.
Petey Pablo approves.
Weekly Debate Fire-Starter
This week I’ve decided to go a slightly different route than usual. Typically I would pit two Kansas City staples or institutions together and see which one wins the comment section cage-match. Instead, today, let’s get a little more topical …
There’s been some recent scuttlebutt (hehe … I love that word) about a potential baseball stadium being built downtown. Maybe you all will agree with me. Maybe you will all disagree with me. Mayhaps you don’t give a damn either way.Embed from Getty Images
I, for one, would be completely against this idea. First off, I work downtown frequently. Parking is already a headache, and traffic — while not exactly New York or L.A. — is still more than I want to deal with on a bad day. Add in a daytime baseball game and that would only further compound my problem.
Second, taxation is theft … so unless the owner of this proposed complex is willing to pay for the entire thing without a tax increase, “that’s a no from me, dog.” Go ahead and finish that airport terminal first …
What BBQ competitions do you frequent? Will you buy me some Mahomes artwork? How about that stadium idea? Let us know below!
